On CBN Newswatch, June 29: Iraq fights ISIS as God shows his saving power in Mosul; Secret to 80 years of marriage: 'Put God first,' and more. Read Transcript

OUR GOR GARY LANE IS ON THIS

STORY.

Reporter: THE BATTLE

TO LIBERATE IRAQ'S SECOND

LARGEST CITY FROM THE

CLUTCHES OF ISIS IS IN THE

FINAL STAGES, BUT THE

GOING IS A BIT SLOW.

THE FEW ISLAMIC STATE

FIGHTERS THAT REMAIN IN

THE CITY ARE USING HUMAN

SHIELDS TO SAVE THEMSELVES

FROM THE OVERWHELMING

MIGHT OF IRAQI AND

COALITION FORCES.

ONE IRAQI COMMANDER SAYS

IT IS IMPORTANT HIS TROOPS

KEEP PEOPLE SAFE.

WE'VE BEEN ADVANCING METER

BY METER THESE DAYS, TO

AVOID ANY PROBLEMS WITH

REGARD TO PROTECTION OF

CIVILIANS, HE SAYS.

NOW WE MOVE ONLY 50 TO

100-METERS EVERY DAY TO

PROTECT THE PEOPLE HERE.

THIS DRAWING SHOWS THE

DESTRUCTION IN WESTERN

MOSUL.

THE GRAND al-NURI MOSQUE

IS IN RUINS.

THE U.S. DEFENSE

DEPARTMENT SAID

APPROXIMATELY 2,000

JIHADISTS REMAIN IN MOSUL.

AND THEIR NUMBERS HAVE NOW

DWINDLED TO JUST A FEW

HUNDRED.

IT WAS THE AMAZING RESCUE

OF A LITTLE GIRL IN EARLY

JUNE THAT BROUGHT ONE

AMERICAN TO HIS KNEES IN

THANKFUL PRAYER.

IT IS THE VIDEO AND STORY

THAT HAS GONE VIRAL.

THREFREE BURMA RANGERS DAVID

EUBANK CAME TO FREE A

YOUNG GIRL.

SOME WERE STILL ALIVE

AMONG THE DEAD BODIES,

INCLUDING THE GIRL, WHO

WAS CLUTCHING THE BODY OF

HER DEAD MOTHER.

HE STARTED PRAYING THE

WHOLE WAY.

HE MOTIONED TO THE

TRAUMATIZED GIRL, BUT SHE

WOULDN'T COME TO HIM.

HE TOLD CBN NEWS HE KNEW

HE HAD TO RUN 50 YARDS TO

SAVE HER.

WATCHING HER WA WAS HORRIBLE.

SHE WAS HOLDING ON TO HER

DEAD MOTHER AND WAS

TERRIFIED.

IED SAIDI SAID, LORD, HELP US.

I THOUGHT, IF I DIE, MY

WIFE AND CHILDREN WOULD

UNDERSTAND BECAUSE I SAVED

A LITTLE GIRL.

Reporter: HE SAYS

JOHN 13: 15 KEPT COMING TO

HIM.

PEOPLE SAY HE IS A HERO.

EUBANK DISAGREES.

I CONSIDER MYSELF

FORMAFORGIVEN BY JESUS AND

BLESSED TO DO SOMETHING.

I BELIEVE IT WAS GOD'S

POWER THAT HELPED RESCUE

THAT GIRL.

Efrem: MITCHELL

McCONNELL IS HOPING TO

START THE FOURTH OF JULY

HOLIDAY WITH A REVISED

VERSION OF THE NEW HEALTH

CARE BILL.

EVERYBODY AROUND THE

TABLE IS INTERESTED IN

GETTING TO THE END.

Efrem: HE IS STILL

FIGHTING AN UPHILL BATTLE.

NINE G.O.P. SENATORS ARE

OPPOSED TO THE BILL.

AND IT IS UNCLEAR WHICH

PARTS OF THE DRAFT

McCONNELL CAN CHANGE TO

GET THE 50 VOTES HE NEEDS

TO PASS IT.

JOHN CORNYN IS STILL

OPTIMISTIC ABOUT PASSING

THE BILL.

I EXPECT TO GET IT DONE

THIS WEEK.

Efrem: IF SENATE

REPUBLICANS CANNOT GET

THIS BILL FINISHED THIS

WEEK, SOME SAY IT IS TIME

TO BEGIN EXPLORING OTHER

OPTIONS.

> THE DEPARTMENT OF

HOMELAND SECURITY HAS LAID

OUT NEW SECURITY AVIATION

MEASURES AND IT WILL

AFFECT THOUSANDS OF

FLIGHTS COMING INTO THE

UNITED STATES FROM AROUND

THE WORLD.

ERIC GONZALES HAS MORE.

Reporter: HOMELAND

SECURITY SECRETARY JOHN

KELLEY SAYS HIS AGENCY IS

RAISING THE BAR GLOBALLY

WITH NEW SECURITY MEASURES

TO KEEP AIRLINE PASSENGERS

AND AIRPORTS ACROSS THE

UNITED STATES SAFE.

KELLY SAYS THE CHANGES ARE

NECESSARY AGAINST THE

CONSTANTLY EVOLVING THREAT

OF TERRORISM.

LET ME BE CLEAR,

SECURITY IS MY NUMBER ONE

CONCERN.

OUR ENEMIES ARE ADAPTIVE,

AND WE HAVE TO BE ADAPTIVE

AS WELL.

Reporter: HE CITED

SECURITY CONCERNS,

HOWEVER, SOURCES WITHIN

THE DEPARTMENT TELL ME

THERE ARE NEW POTENTIAL

THREATS, SUCH AS HIJACKERS

TAKING OVER IN-BOUND U.S.

PLANES.

HOMELAND SECURITY TOP

OFFICIALS TOLD CBN NEWS

INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS

CAN EXPECT ENHANCED

SCREENING MEASURES,

ESPECIALLY WITH ANY

TECHNOLOGY DEVICES, AND

EVEN BOMB-SNIFFING DOGS.

180 AIRLINES IN 105

COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD

WILL BE AFFECTED.

OFFICIALS SAY 280 U.S.

AIRPORTS WITH

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS MUST

IMPLEMENT THE NEW

MEASURES, AFFECTING MORE

THAN 325,000 PASSENGERS

EACH DAY.

THE THREAT IS NOT

DIMINISHED.

IN FACT, I'M CONCERNED WE

ARE SEEING RENEWED

INTEREST ON THE PART OF

TERRORISTS GROUPS TO GO

AFTER THE AVIATION SECTOR,

FROM BOMBING AIRCRAFT TO

ATTACKING AIRPORTS ON THE

GROUND, AS YOU SAW IN

BRUSSELS AND ISTANBUL.

Reporter: ALTHOUGH

HOMELAND SECURITY DOES NOT

HAVE JURISDICTION OVER

HOMELAND AIRPORTS, IT HAS

AUTHORITY OVER AIRPORTS IN

THE U.S.

AND ANY AIRLINES WHO DO

NOT IMPLEMENT THE NEW

MEASURES WHEN THEY'RE

SUPPOSED TO COULD FACE

HEFTY PENALTIES.

ERIC GONZALES, CBN NEWS,

WASHINGTON.

Efrem: A CANDID

CONFESSION FROM THE

FOUNDER OF "FOCUS ON THE

FAMILY."

JAMES DOBSON TALKS ABOUT

HIS STORIED LIFE, NEXT.

Efrem: HE HAS BEEN

CALLED ONE OF THE MOST

INFLUENTIAL EVANGELICAL

LEADERS OF OUR TIME.

AND FOR GOOD REASON.

FOR THE PAST FOUR DECADES,

DR. JAMES DOBSON HAS

DEVOTEDED HIS LIFE AND

MINISTRY TO PRESERVING THE

CALLED ONE OF THE MOST

INFLUENTIAL EVANGELICAL

LEADERS OF OUR TIME.

AND FOR GOOD REASON.

FOR THE PAST FOUR DECADES,

DR. JAMES DOBSON HAS

DEVOTEDED HIS LIFE AND

MINISTRY TO PRESERVING THE

FAMILY.

HE IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS

LONG-RUNNING RADIO SHOW,

"FOCUS ON THE FAMILY."

THIS YEAR HE IS

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN

BROADCASTING.

OUR WENDY GRIFFITH

RECENTLY TRAVELLED TO HIS

HEADQUARTERS IN COLORADO

SPRINGS TO FIND OUT WHAT

IS NEXT FOR THE ICONIC

BROADCASTER.

Wendy: JIM DOBSON WAS

BORN IN SHREVEPORT,

LOUISIANA, IN 1936.

THE SON, GRANDSON, AND

GREAT GRANDSON OF

MINISTERS.

A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW

THIS, BUT YOU HAD ACTUALLY

A FEW LITTLE REBELLIOUS

YEARS.

RIGHT.

[LAUGHTER]

MY DAD WAS GONE A LOT,

AND MY MOTHER RAISED ME.

SHE WAS A GREAT, GREAT

MOTHER.

LIKE A LOT OF KIDS, WHEN I

TURNED 16, I BEGAN TO

THINK I KNEW MORE THAN SHE

DID.

AND I HAD BEEN OUT

SOMEWHERE -- I DIDN'T DO

ANYTHING REALLY BAD.

I WON'T EVEN TELL YOU WHAT

IT IS.

BUT I CAME HOME, AND SHE

SAID, I KNOW WHERE YOU'VE

BEEN.

AND I SAID, RIGHT.

AND I SAID, I'M GOING TO

DO IT AGAIN.

AND I HAD NEVER TAKEN HER

ON LIKE THAT.

AND SHE LOOKED AT ME, AND

SHE SAID, WHAT DID YOU

SAY?

MY DAD WAS A THOUSAND

MILES AWAY, AND SHE CALLED

HIM.

AND WHILE I WAS STANDING

THERE, SHE HAD A SIMPLE

MESSAGE FOR HIM.

SHE SAID, I NEED YOU.

AND TO MY SHOCK, MY DAD

CANCELLED A FOUR-YEAR

SLATE OF REVIVAL MEETINGS.

FOUR YEARS.

AND SAID, I'M NOT DOING

THAT ANYMORE.

HE GOT ON A TRAIN AND HE

CAME HOME.

Wendy: THAT DECISION

CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR THE

YOUNG JIMMY.

AND MY DAD, BY MAKING

THAT SACRIFICE, INVESTED

IN ME.

WE HUNTED.

WE FISHED.

HE WAS WITH ME.

HE PULLED ME BACK FROM THE

EDGE WHEN -- AT THE TIME,

I WAS AN ONLY CHILD, SO

THE TIME WITH MY MOTHER

AND DAD WAS IDEALIC.

Wendy: BUT HE DID NOT

FOLLOW HIS FOREFATHERS TO

THE PULPIT, CHOOSING

INSTEAD THE PATH OF

ACADEMIA AND SERVED AS A

CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST FOR

MANY YEARS.

BUT HIS LOVE FOR ACADEMIA

WAS OVERSHADOWED BY HIS

GROWING CONCERN FOR THE

RAPID DEMISE OF THE

FAMILY.

I SAW WHERE IT IS NOW,

COMING.

Wendy: WITH HIS WIFE,

SHIRLEY, AND TWO YOUNG

CHILDREN, DOBSON LEFT

UNIVERSITY LIFE IN 1977 TO

BEGIN A RADIO PROGRAM ON

34 CHRISTIAN STATIONS

CALLED "FOCUS ON THE

FAMILY."

MR. PRESIDENT, THANK

YOU FOR COMING BY TO SEE

US HERE AT "FOCUS ON THE

FAMILY."

WELL, I'M VERY PLEASED

TO BE HERE.

Wendy: UNFORTUNATELY

IT WAS HIS OWN FAMILY THAT

BEGAN TO SUFFER.

I WAS NEGLECTING MY OWN

FAMILY, AND MY DAD SAW IT.

AND HE WAS ON HIS WAY TO

HAWAII.

AND HE WROTE ME A LETTER.

AND THEN HE SAID, IF YOU

DON'T HAVE TIME TO INVEST

IN THEM AND PRAY FOR THEM,

YOU'LL LOSE THEM.

Wendy: DOBSON CUT

BACK ON TRAVEL AND "FOCUS

ON THE FAMILY" TOOK OFF.

IT EVENTUALLY GREW TO

7,000 STATIONS IN 150

COUNTRIES.

AND AT ITS PEAK REACHED

220 MILLION PEOPLE EACH

DAY.

IN ADDITION TO HIS RADIO

SHOW, HE WROTE NUMEROUS

BEST-SELLERS, INCLUDING

"DARE TO DISCIPLINE," AND

"WHAT WIFE'S WISH THEIR

HUSBANDS KNEW ABOUT

WOMEN."

HE SERVED AS AN ADVISOR TO

FIVE PRESIDENTS, INCLUDING

RONALD REAGAN.

HE SAID, I WANT YOU TO

TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO TO

STRENGTHEN THE FAMILY.

Wendy: WOW.

I SAID, WHY NOT A

FAMILY IMPACT STUDY

COMMISSION.

THERE WERE FOUR OF THOSE.

AND HE ISSUED EXECUTIVE

ORDERS FOR ALL FOUR.

Wendy: IN 1989,

DOBSON SHOCKED THE NATION

BY SITTING DOWN WITH

SERIAL KILLER TED BUNDY

THE DAY BEFORE HIS

EXECUTION.

HE TOLD DOBSON VIOLENT

PORNOGRAPHY LED TO HIS

UNTHINKABLE BEHAVIOR.

FOR THE RECORD, YOU ARE

GUILTY OF KILLING MANY

WOMEN AND GIRLS.

YES, THAT'S TRUE.

Wendy: AFTER MORE

THAN 30 YEARS AT "FOCUS ON

THE FAMILY," DOBSON LEFT

THE RADIO SHOW HE FOUNDED.

THIS WAS YOUR BABY.

AND IN 2009 YOU WALKED

AWAY.

WHY?

WELL, I FRANKLY DON'T

WANT TO GO FAR INTO THAT,

BUT THERE WERE

PHILOSOPHICAL DIFFERENCES,

AND IT WAS THAT I SAW

THINGS A LITTLE

DIFFERENTLY THAN THE

PERSON WHO IS MY

SUCCESSOR.

Wendy: HE BEGAN A

NEW, NATIONALLY SYNDICATED

SHOW CALLED "FAMILY TALK,"

BUT SAYS HIS MESSAGE

HASN'T CHANGED.

YOU CANNOT HAVE A

STRONG COUNTRY WITHOUT

STRONG FAMILIES.

THAT'S THE NEXT

GENERATION.

Wendy: WHEN YOU LOOK

AROUND TODAY AND YOU SEE

GAY MARRIAGE PRETTY MUCH

THE LAW OF THE LAND AND

YOU SEE TRANSGENDER

BECOMING SORT OF THE NORM

IN TERMS OF PEOPLE BEING

ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT, DO

YOU EVER GET DISCOURAGED?

OF COURSE I DO BECAUSE

THE FAMILY IS THE GROUND

FLOOR.

THAT'S THE FOUNDATION FOR

THE ENTIRE CULTURE.

WENDY, I MEAN, EVERYTHING

SITS ON THAT.

Wendy: AT 81, DOBSON

SAYS HE HAS NO PLANS TO

RETIRE.

HE STARTS EACH DAY WITH 45

MINUTES ON THE TREADMILL,

BEFORE COMING HERE TO HIS

OFFICE, THAT LOOKS MORE

LIKE A SKI CHALET, ADORNED

WITH RUSTIC FURNITURE,

FAMILY PHOTOS, AND A

MAJESTIC VIEW OF PIKES

PEAK.

AND LIKE PIKES PEAK,

DOBSON SAYS ONE THING

REMAINS PARAMOUNT OVER ALL

ELSE: TEACHING YOUR

CHILDREN TO LOVE THE LORD.

THERE IS NOTHING MORE

IMPORTANT THAN INTRODUCING

THEM TO JESUS CHRIST.

SO TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY

TO INFLUENCE THOSE

INDIVIDUAL FAMILIES IS A

GREAT THRILL FOR ME.

Efrem: SHE APPEARS ON

"AMERICA'S GOT TALENT,"

AND BLOWS THE AUDIENCE

AWAY WITH HER

HAPPENED.

*

Efrem: AND THAT YOUNG

LADY WITH THE BIG,

BEAUTIFUL VOICE IS A

27-YEAR-OLD WHO IS MAKING

HEADLINES FOR A SHOW

STOPPING PERFORMANCE ON

"AMERICA'S GOT TALENT."

AND BEHIND THAT POWERFUL

VOICE IS AN EQUALLY

POWERFUL STORY.

SHE JOINS US NOW TO SHARE

MORE ABOUT THAT.

THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH

US.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING

ME.

Efrem: FIRST OFF,

WHAT STARTED YOU TO SING?

STARTING ME SINGING,

THAT WAS JUST THE PURE

LOVE FOR MUSIC, REALLY.

I GREW UP IN A VERY

MUSICAL HOUSEHOLD, ON MY

MOM AND MY DAD'S SIDE.

SO I WAS REALLY INFLUENCED

BY THEIR TASTE IN MUSIC.

BASICALLY THAT JUST

BIRTHED IN ME THIS REAL

LOVE FOR ME.

ONE TIME I STARTED SINGING

ALONG, AND I JUST FOUND I

REALLY LOVED SINGING

ALONG, AND THAT IS KIND OF

HOW IT STARTED.

Efrem: BEAUTIFUL.

WE'RE STILL GLAD YOU'RE

STILL DOING IT.

TELL US WHAT HAPPENED TO

YOU IN 2005.

DECEMBER 10, 2005 WAS A

DAY OF NATIONAL TRAGEDY

FOR STUDENTS OF NIGERIA.

I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, IN

12th GRADE, WHEN I WAS

INVOLVED IN A VERY

TERRIBLE ACCIDENT.

AND I WAS GETTING HOME

FROM MY BOARDING SCHOOL

FOR THE CHRISTMAS

HOLIDAYS, ALONG WITH 60

OTHER STUDENTS FROM MY

SCHOOL, AND OTHER

PASSENGERS, JUST RANDOM

PASSENGERS.

MAKING UP 109 PEOPLE ON

THE PLANE THAT WE BOARDED

TO GET HOME.

SO EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL,

YOU KNOW, THAT DAY.

WE WENT FROM THE SCHOOL

BUS TO THE AIRPORT, AND

THEN WE WAITED A BIT, THE

FLIGHT WAS DELAYED, AND

THEN WE GOT TO THE PLANE,

BOARDED, AND EVERYTHING

WAS JUST NORMAL.

AND THE FLIGHT WAS

UNEVENTFUL FOR THE MOST

PART.

I WAS IN AN AISLE SEAT.

NEXT TO ME WAS ONE OF MY

VERY GOOD FRIENDS.

AND IT WAS 25 MINUTES TO

LANDING WHEN THE PILOT

MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT

HE WOULD BE STARTING HIS

DESCENT INTO THE AIRPORT.

AND THE TURBULENCE

STARTED.

AND AT FIRST NO ONE REALLY

PANICKED BECAUSE

TURBULENCE HAPPENS.

BUT THEN IT STARTED TO GET

REALLY BAD AND REALLY,

REALLY STRONG AND HARD AND

JERKY.

AND PEOPLE STARTED

PANICKING.

AND THEN I SHOUTED IN A

PANIC VOICE, AND THAT

CAUSED CHAOS.

I REMEMBER BEING IN THE

STATE OF STUNNED.

I WAS JUST STUNNED AND

SHOCKED THAT THIS WAS MY

REALITY.

I NEVER REALLY GOT PAST

THE SHOCK PART OF THE

ENTIRE EPISODE.

AND I REMEMBER HOLDING MY

FRIEND BACK FROM ACROSS

THE AISLE.

SHE ASKED ME, WHAT SHOULD

WE DO?

I REMEMBER SAYING, I THINK

WE SHOULD PRAY.

BUT I DON'T QUITE REMEMBER

REMEMBER -- I COULD HEAR

MYSELF SAY THOSE WORDS.

AND THE NEXT THING I

REMEMBER IS THIS SHARP,

METAL-SCRAPING SOUND IN MY

EARS.

AND I MUST HAVE BLACKED

OUT.

BECAUSE THE NEXT THING I

KNOW IS I'M WAKING UP IN

THE HOSPITAL IN SOUTH

AFRICA.

Efrem: AND YOU'RE ONE

OF ONLY TWO PEOPLE WHO

SURVIVED THAT CRASH.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE

HEALING PROCESS.

WHAT WAS THAT LIKE?

THE HEALING PROCESS --

IT WAS VERY -- FIRST OF

ALL, THERE WERE, LIKE -- I

HAVE TWO SEGMENTS OF IT IN

MY HEAD, KIND OF LIKE

SEPARATED INTO TWO

DIFFERENT SEGMENTS.

THERE WAS THE HEALING IN

SOUTH AFRICA AND THEN

THERE WAS THE HEALING HERE

IN AMERICA.

SOUTH AFRICA IS WHERE I

DID MY EMERGENCY

TREATMENT.

THEY FLEW ME THERE RIGHT

AFTER THE ACCIDENT BECAUSE

IT WAS THE CLOSEST PLACE

THAT HAD THE BEST HEALTH

CARE THAT WAS EQUIPPED TO

TAKE CARE OF THE LEVEL OF

BURNS THAT I HAD.

AND THOSE SEVEN MONTHS IN

SOUTH AFRICA WERE

DEFINITELY THE MOST

DIFFICULT SEVEN MONTHS OF

MY ENTIRE LIFE.

IT WAS A MATTER OF LIFE OR

DEATH IN THOSE MOMENTS.

AND THE PAIN WAS

EXCRUCIATING.

AND THE ITCHING THAT CAME

WITH THE HEALING SCARS WAS

EVEN WORSE, IF THAT IS

POSSIBLE.

Efrem: I CAN'T LET

YOU GO WITHOUT ASKING

ABOUT "AMERICA'S GOT

TALENT."

A BEAUTIFUL PERFORMANCE.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING,

SEEING THIS ALL UNFOLD FOR

YOU?

THAT HAS BEEN JUST SUCH

AN UPLIFTING AND

FULFILLING EXPERIENCE SO

FAR.

FIRST OF ALL, I'M IN AWE

THAT THIS IS EVEN

HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

I'VE NEVER IMAGINED OR

ALLOWED MYSELF TO DREAM OF

THE FACT THAT I WOULD BE

ON THE STAGE, PERFORMING

AND SINGING, SOMETHING

THAT I LOVE TO DO,

SOMETHING THAT IS SO

PERSONAL TO ME, SHARING

THAT WITH AMERICA.

IT IS JUST SO WONDERFUL.

I'VE ALWAYS IMAGINED

MYSELF SINGING IN MY ROOM,

IN FRONT OF JUST MY BED

AND MY FURNITURE, AND JUST

IMAGINING A STAGE.

BUT THAT WAS AS FAR AS IT

EVER WENT.

THIS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE

OF MY SECRET DREAMS.

AND TO SEE IT COME TO

FRUITION IN THIS WAY --

EVEN IF THIS IS HOW FAR IT

GETS, I DON'T EVEN CARE.

I AM JUST SO HAPPY I GOT

THAT EXPERIENCE IN MY

LIFE.

AND I'M JUST SO GRATEFUL

TO GOD FOR EVERYTHING SO

FAR.

Efrem: I HATE TO PUT

YOU ON THE SPOT, BUT IS

THERE A SONG ON YOUR HEART

YOU MIGHT WANT TO SING A

LINE OR TO FOR US.

LOVE.

BUT I WAS TOLD I CAN'T DO

THAT.

Efrem: UNDERSTOOD.

WE WILL BE WATCHING AND

CERTAINLY SEEING A LOT

MORE OF YOU.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Efrem: THANK YOU SO

MUCH, CATCHI, FOR SHARING
