WHAT HAPPENED?

FOR DECADES, I WAS

ALWAYS A STEP AHEAD OF

DEPRESSION.

ALWAYS OUT-RUNNING IT, BUT

IT WAS ALWAYS NIPPPING AT

MY HEELS HEELS.

HEELS.

IT CAUGHT UP WITH ME IN

1991, AND I HAD A

THREE-YEAR DEPRESSION, AND

THEN RALLIED, AND STAYED

AHEAD OF IT UNTIL ABOUT

2003, AND I WENT ON

MEDICATION.

THAT REALLY WORKED FOR A

PERIOD OF TIME, BUT

BECAUSE OF SHAME, I

DECIDED TO WEAN MYSELF OFF

OF MY MEDICATION, AND IN

2010, I HAD A MAJOR CRASH

AND BURN THAT LASTED FOR

ALMOST FOUR YEARS.

AND DECIDED TO WRITE THE

BOOK BECAUSE THIS WAS JUST

TOO IMPORTANT A TOPIC TO

IGNORE.

SHAME --

YES.

Andrew: WHY IS THAT A

PROBLEM?

WE'RE SUPPOSED TO --

ESPECIALLY IF WE'RE IN

SUPPOSED TO HAVE IT ALL

TOGETHER.

WE'RE TELLING PEOPLE WHERE

THEY CAN FIND HELP, AND

THEN WE COME OFF OF THE

PLATFORM, OFF OF THE

STAGE, AND WE FEEL LOUSY

AND WE FEEL GUILTY FOR

FEELING GUILTY, AND THEN

IT BECOMES A CYCLE THAT

NEVER ENDS.

TIME IN YOUR LIFE TO

EXPLORE REASONS THIS ALL

MAY HAVE STARTED, AND

NEVER GOOD ENOUGH WAS A

BIG DISCOVERY.

I HAD THIS MANTRA GOING

THROUGH MY HEAD, NOT GOOD

ENOUGH, NOT HAVING ENOUGH.

AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE

ADDRESS IN THE BOOK IS

SELF-SABOTAGE, AND YOU

INTEND TO DO CERTAIN

THINGS AND THEN YOU DO

EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO MAKE

SURE THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN.

I WROTE THE BOOK BECAUSE I

WANTED TO HELP PEOPLE

SHORTEN THEIR SEASON.

ALSO TO MAKE SURE THAT

THEY TOUCH ON EVERYTHING.

FOR INSTANCE, COGNITIVE

THERAPY, HOW YOU THINK.

I WAS TAUGHT HOW TO THINK

BIBLICALLY, HOW TO

MEDITATE ON THE THINGS OF

SCRIPTURE, BUT I COULD

NEVER SUSTAIN IT.

ONCE THE MEDICAL ISSUE WAS

ADDRESSED, THEN I COULD GO

BACK AND DO THE COGNITIVE

THERAPY, AND IT STUCK.

IT HELD.

AND IT WORKED.

Andrew: ONE THING

THAT REALLY STRUCK ME IN

YOUR BOOK AS SO SPECIAL

WAS, YOU SAID AS PART OF

THE PROCESS OF HEALING AND

DISCOVERING, MAYBE WHY YOU

HAD THIS NEVER GOOD ENOUGH

MANTRA --

YEAH.

Andrew: IT IS NOT

JUST DISCOVERING WHO

OFFENDED YOU AND STOPPING

THERE, BUT FORGIVING.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT?

I LIKE TO SAY IN

SECULAR THERAPY, WE GO

BACK IN TIME TO FIND WHO

TO BLAME.

AND IN CHRISTIAN THERAPY,

WE GO BACK IN TIME TO FIND

WHO TO FORGIVE.

BECAUSE THERE ARE TWO

KINDS OF SINS.

THERE ARE THE SINS THAT WE

COMMIT AND THEN THERE ARE

THE SINS THAT ARE

COMMITTED AGAINST US.

AS CHILDREN, WE OFTEN

DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH

THAT.

SO WE INTERNALIZE IT.

SOMEHOW WE BLAME OURSELVES

AND WE CARRY THAT SHAME

INTO ADULTHOOD, AND THEN A

ROOT OF BITTERNESS THAT

HEBREWS 12 TALKS ABOUT

SPRINGS UP AND IT DIE

FILEDEFIESMANY.

Andrew: SOMETIMES THE

CHURCH CAN BE THE HARDEST.

WHAT KIND OF BATTLE WERE

YOU GETTING --

I WAS FORTUNATE BECAUSE

I WAS IN A PRETTY SAFE

PLACE.

WHAT I HAVE FOUND, THOUGH,

IS WHEN I HAVE SPOKEN AND

PEOPLE WILL COME UP

AFTERWARDS -- I HAD, FOR

INSTANCE, ONE 70-YEAR-OLD

LADY COME UP TO ME, AND

HER EYEBROWS WERE FALLEN.

YOU COULD TELL SHE WAS A

GODLY WOMAN.

HER BIBLE WAS WORN.

SHE LOVED THE SCRIPTURES.

BUT SHE CAME TO ME AND SHE

SAID, IS IT OKAY IF I TAKE

MEDICATION?

AND I GRABBED HER BY BOTH

SHOULDERS, AND I SAID, GO

TO YOUR DOCTOR AND GET ON

THE MEDICATION.

AND THREE WEEKS LATER, HER

DEPRESSION WAS LIFTED.

Andrew: BECAUSE THE

ACCUSATION FROM SOME

CHRISTIANS MAY BE IF YOU

REALLY WERE EXPERIENCING

THE LOVE OF GOD, THIS

WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE FOR

YOU?

EXACTLY.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT IS

ERRONEOUS, BUT I TELL

PEOPLE IF YOU HAVE

DIABETES, YOU TAKE SOME

MEDICATION FOR YOUR

DIABETES.

IF YOU HAVE A HEART ISSUE,

YOU TAKE THE HEART

MEDICINE.

IF YOU HAVE DEPRESSION,

YOU NEED TO TAKE YOUR

MEDICINE.

SURPRISED BY A STATEMENT

YOU MADE IN YOUR BOOK,

WHICH IS PERHAPS THE MOST

DANGEROUS PLACE IS NOT

WHEN YOU'RE IN DEPRESSION,

BUT WHEN YOU'RE BEGINNING

TO ADVANCE OUT.

WHY IS THAT?

BECAUSE YOUR REASONING

RETURNS.

HERE IS WHAT YOU THINK:

I'VE GONE THROUGH THIS FOR

SO LONG, I'VE READ ALL OF

THE BOOKS, I'VE GONE TO

THE DOCTORS, AND HERE I AM

AND I'M STILL IN THE SAME

PLACE.

AND WITH THAT YOU BEGIN TO

SAY, I DON'T WANT TO GO

THROUGH THIS ANYMORE.

AND THERE WERE TWO

OCCASIONS, SUMMER OF 2010,

SUMMER OF 2011, IF THERE

HAD BEEN A GUN IN OUR

HOME, I PROBABLY WOULD

HAVE USED IT.

EXPERIENCES I BELIEVE YOU

WERE TELLING YOUR WIFE,

I'M JUST SO SCARED, I SO

FRIGHTENED, RIGHT?

THAT WAS AT THE VERY

BEGINNING.

AND THEN I WAS VERY WEARY.

AND THAT'S WHERE A LOT OF

PEOPLE GET.

THEY GET TO THE POINT

WHERE THEY'RE SO WEARY.

I'LL TELL YOU WHERE IT

TURNED -- THE PIVOT POINT

FOR ME IS WHEN HOPE

RETURNED.

BECAUSE DEPRESSIVES LOSE

HOPE.

AND I WAS TALKING TO MY

WIFE, AND I SAID, HONEY,

WHY HAVEN'T YOU LEFT ME.

BECAUSE ONE OF MY

DAUGHTERS SAID, DAD, IT

WASN'T ONLY YOU; WE ALL

WENT THROUGH IT.

AND MY WIFE TURNED HER

HEAD AND LOOKED AT ME AND

SAID, I'M YOUR FAMILY.

AND WHEN SHE SAID THAT, I

REALIZED I HAVE GOT TO GET

WELL.

I'VE GOT TO DO WHATEVER I

HAVE TO DO.

I HAVE TO TURN OVER EVERY

STONE IN ORDER TO GET TO

THE PLACE WHERE I'M

BETTER.

AND THANKFULLY BECAUSE OF

GOOD COUNSELLING, OF GOOD

MEDICINE, AND OF A GOOD

SUPPORT SYSTEM, A GOOD

CIRCLE OF PEOPLE, THAT

CONTINUES WELL TO THIS

DAY.

BRONCHITIS, WITH A

CONSISTENT COUGH.

I COUGHED AND I

COUGHED.

AT ONE POINT I COUGHED SO

HARD I KNEW SOMETHING

HAPPENED IN MY BACK, AND

IT HURT TO MOVE.

IT HURT TO TURN.

I COULDN'T BEND OVER.

I COULDN'T DO THE THINGS

THAT I WAS DOING BEFORE.

Andrew: WHILE THE

COUGH EVENTUALLY SUBSIDED,

THE BACK PAIN GOT WORSE.

AS LONG AS I DIDN'T

MOVE AROUND, THAT WAS THE

ONLY TIME I WAS EVER OUT

OF PAIN.

IT GRATED ON ME AND GRATED

ON ME.

AND IT WENT ON WEEK AFTER

WEEK AND TURNED INTO MONTH

AFTER MONTH.

AND THEN I HAD TO GIVE UP

THE LOVE OF MY LIFE, WHICH

WAS PLAYING THE PIANO.

WHEN YOU CAN'T DO

SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE

SO I WOULD JUST SIT IN MY

DEPRESSED.

BECAUSE IT WAS, LIKE,

EVERYTHING THAT I LOVED TO

DO WAS TAKEN AWAY FROM ME.

LOST TWO OF HER SIBLINGS

WITHIN TWO DAYS OF EACH

OTHER.

IT WAS JUST A GRIEF, A

HORRIFIC GRIEF.

I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

I WAS JUST CRYING OUT TO

GOD AND I WAS SO HURT.

THE ONLY THING CAROL

AND HER HUSBAND BILL COULD

DO WAS PRAY.

I WAS IN EMOTIONAL PAIN

AND PHYSICAL PAIN.

AND THEN I PRAYED AND I

SAID, LORD, HOW MUCH MORE

CAN I TAKE.

I DON'T THINK I CAN KEEP

GOING LIKE THIS.

CONTINUED FOR SIX MONTHS.

THEN ONE DAY CAROL WAS

WATCHING HER FAVORITE

SHOW, "THE 700 CLUB."

AND GORDON AND TERRY WERE

GIVING WORDS OF KNOWLEDGE.

HE STARTED CALLING OUT

WORDS OF HEALING.

AND HE STARTED SAYING

SOMETHING ABOUT PAIN IN

THEIR BACK, AND HE

DESCRIBED ME.

Gordon: YOU'VE HAD

THIS SPIKE OF PAIN RIGHT

IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR

SHOULDER BLADES.

ALL OF THAT TENSION IS

JUST DROPPING OFF OF

YOU --

I KNEW, WHEN HE

DESCRIBED THE PAIN IN THE

BACK, IED SAID, THAT' I SAID, THAT'S FOR

ME.

AND GORDON SAID SOMETHING

HE ALWAYS SAID, HE SAID,

DO SOMETHING YOU COULDN'T

DO BEFORE.

SO I GOT OUT OF MY CHAIR

AND I WALKED HALF WAY TO

THE TELEVISION, AND I BENT

OVER AND I BENT OVER, AND

THERE WAS NO PAIN.

THING CAROL DID WAS WHAT

SHE HAD MISSED MOST.

I WENT IN THERE AND I

SAT AT THE PIANO, AND I

BEGAN TO PLAY "IT IS WELL

WITH MY SOUL," AND I BEGAN

TO WORSHIP GOD AND I

THANKED HIM FOR MY

HEALING.

AND NOT ONLY DID HE HEAL

MY PAIN AND TAKE THAT AWAY

FROM ME, BUT HE HEALED MY

BROKEN HEART THAT DAY.

HE TOOK THAT HORRIBLE

GRIEF, AND I'VE NEVER BEEN

THE SAME.

THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE

GAVE ME A MUCH DEEPER

SENSE OF GOD'S LOVE.

IT CHANGED EVERYTHING.

IT WAS AWESOME.

HE DIDN'T CARE IF I WAS

WORTHY.

IT DIDN'T MATTER TO GOD

BECAUSE HE LOVES ME THAT

MUCH.

I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW GOD

CAN DO IT FOR THEM.

IF HE CAN DO IT FOR ME, HE

CAN DO IT FOR YOU.

WATCHING HER PLAY THE

THAT MIRACLE SHE RECEIVED

IN HER BODY AFTER THAT

PHYSICAL PAIN, AND THEN

OVERCOMING THE THE

DISCOURAGEMENT AND SADNESS

OF LOSING MEMBERS OF HER

FAMILY SO QUICKLY LIKE

THAT.

BUT SHE REDISCOVERED GOD'S

LOVE FOR HER AND HIS

FAITHFULNESS.

THAT CAME BECAUSE SHE WAS

WATCHING A TELEVISION SHOW

WHERE SOMEBODY WAS

PRAYING.

AND I WOULD LIKE TO DO

THAT FOR YOU NOW.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR

NEEDS ARE -- GOD DOES.

JESUS LOVES US SO DEEPLY,

AND HE IS LISTENING.

FATHER GOD, WE SEE THAT

MIRACLE AND WE CELEBRATE.

LORD, WE ALSO NEED A TOUCH

FROM YOU IN OUR LIFE.

FATHER, WE THINK OF THE

LEPER WHO BOWED BEFORE

JESUS CHRIST'S, AND SAID,

IF YOU ARE WILLING, YOU

CAN MAKE ME CLEAN.

AND JESUS SAID, I AM
