Andrew: THE TRUTH

Andrew: THE TRUTH

BEHIND ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS.

HERE ARE PEOPLE

CONSUMING DIET DRINKS AND

GAINING WEIGHT.

Andrew: FIND OUT WHY

IF YOU'RE DRINKING JUST

ONE A DAY, YOU'RE AT RISK.

> PLUS, NICOLE C. MULLEN

JOINS US IN STUDIO ON

TODAY'S "700 CLUB

INTERACTIVE."

GOOD MORNING, AND WELCOME

TO THE SHOW.

IF YOU'RE ONE OF THE

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS WHO

EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING WITH

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS,

PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS NEXT

STORY.

Terry: WE'VE WARNED

YOU ABOUT THESE FAKE

SUGARS FOR YEARS, AND NOW

AS LORIE JOHNSON EXPLAINS,

THEY MIGHT EVEN CAUSE YOU

TO GAIN WEIGHT.

Lorie: THE C.D.C.

REPORTS A STAGGERING 71%

OF ADULTS QUALIFIES AS

OVERWEIGHT OR OBESE.

THE RESULT: THINGS LIKE

HEART DISEASE, CANCER,

DIABETES.

IN JUNE, THE NEW ENGLAND

JOURNAL OF MEDICINE

REPORTED THE WHOLE WORLD

IS GETTING FATTER AND

PAYING A PRICE.

FOUR MILLION DEATHS, 60%

CAUSED BY OBESITY, BUT THE

OTHER 40% BY JUST BEING

OVERWEIGHT.

HEALTH EXPERTS SAY THE

ROOT CAUSE OF OUR WEIGHT

PROBLEM CAN BE SUMMED UP

IN ONE WORD: SUGAR.

MOST AMERICANS CONSUME

ABOUT 160 POUNDS OF IT A

YEAR.

OFTENTIMES IT'S HIDDEN IN

FOODS YOU WOULD NEVER

EXPECT, LIKE YOGURT,

PEANUT BUTTER, PASTA

SAUCE, AND BREAD.

AND OTHER TIMES IT IS

RIGHT OUT FRONT, LIKE IN

SODA.

THIS ONE CAN CONTAINS MORE

THAN NINE TEASPOONS OF

SUGAR.

IT IS NO WONDER SO MANY

PEOPLE TURN TO DIET SODAS,

CONTAINING ZERO CALORIE

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS TO

REDUCE THEIR SUGAR INTAKE.

BUT THAT'S A BAD CHOICE

FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.

A NEW BOSTON UNIVERSITY

STUDY REVEALED PEOPLE WHO

DRANK DIET SODA HAVE THREE

TIMES THE RISK OF

DEVELOPING DEMENTIA AND

HAVING A STROKE.

AND THAT'S PEOPLE WHO JUST

DRINK ONE A DAY.

SO ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS, WE THINK, ARE

MUCH WORSE THAN WE EVER

THOUGHT.

Lorie: THE CLEVELAND

CLINIC'S DR. MICHAEL

ROIZEN SAYS ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS LIKE SACCHARIN

AND SUCROLOS COULD DISRUPT

WHAT IS KNOWN AS OUR

MICROBYRON.

THEY CAUSE A SEPARATE

BREED OF BACTERIA THAT

GROW INSIDE YOU.

Lorie: NEUROLOGIST

DAVID PERLMUTTER SAYS

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

THROW OFF THE DELICATE

BALANCE OF GOOD AND BAD

BACTERIA.

THE BACTERIA THAT LIVE

WITHIN OUR GUT NURTURE THE

BRAIN.

WHEN THEY'RE TREATED

RIGHT.

THEY REDUCE INFLAMMATION,

FOR EXAMPLE.

INFLAMMATION CAUSES

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS,

PARKINSON'S, AND

ALZHEIMER'S, AND DIABETES,

FOR THAT MATTER.

Lorie: PERLMUTTER

SAYS IN ADDITION TO

AVOIDING ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS, CONSIDER

TAKING PROBIOTICS TO

INCREASE GOOD BACTERIA AND

PREBIOTICS TO MAINTAIN

HEALTHY LEVELS.

WE CONSUME ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS TO CONTROL OUR

WEIGHT, BUT BELIEVE IT OR

NOT A NUMBER OF SCIENTIFIC

STUDIES SHOW THEY ACTUALLY

CAUSE US TO GAIN WEIGHT.

ONE REASON GOES RIGHT BACK

TO THE GUT.

THE BODY THINKS IT IS

STARVING AND HOLDS ON TO

EVERY CALORIE THAT A

PERSON CONSUMES.

SO HERE ARE PEOPLE

CONSUMING DIET DRINKS AND

GAINING WEIGHT.

AND THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO

MAKE ANY SENSE, AND YET WE

NOW SEE THAT IT IS

HAPPENING BECAUSE OF

CHANGES IN THE GUT

BACTERIA.

THE RISK OF DEVELOPING

DIABETES IS DRAMATICALLY

INCREASED TWO-FOLD IN

PEOPLE WHO DRINK A LOT OF

SUGARLESS BEVERAGES.

WHO KNEW?

Lorie: NUTRITIONIST

J.J. VIRGIN SAYS STEVIA,

XYLITOL, ERITHRITOL SEEM

TO BE BETTER CHOICES FOR

THE GUT.

BUT THERE IS CALORIE

REGULATION THAT THEY SAY

WITH ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS.

WHEN YOU EAT SOMETHING

WITH A SWEET TASTE WITH NO

CALORIES, THE BODY CAUSES

YOU TO TEND TO OVER EAT.

Lorie: THEN THERE IS

OUR OWN D.N.A.

GENETICS PREDISPOSE AN

ESTIMATED THREE-FOURTHS OF

US TO HAVE AN ADDICTION TO

SWEETS, MEANING THE MORE

WE TAKE IN ARTIFICIAL

SWEETENERS, THE MORE WE

CRAVE ALL SWEETS.

THAT'S WHY HEALTH EXPERTS

RECOMMEND REMOVING THE

TASTE FOR SWEETS ALL

TOGETHER.

SWEET IS A LEARNED

TASTE.

IF YOU GO OFF SWEETS -- IF

YOU GO OFF SUGAR, IF YOUR

BRAIN DOESN'T GET USED TO

IT, IF YOUR TASTEBUDS

DON'T GET USED TO IT, YOU

CAN AVOID IT AND THAT'S A

MUCH HEALTHIER WAY.

Lorie: HE PROVED THIS

THEORY WITH 700 SUGAR

ADDICTS.

FIRST WE TAPER DOWN FOR

A WEEK.

WE START USING MORE SPICES

AND MORE SAVORY, AND

GETTING ENOUGH PROTEIN AND

GETTING HEALTHY FATS IN.

AND THEN AT THE END OF TWO

WEEKS, WE GO BACK AND

TEST.

THESE SUGAR ADDICTS TOLD

ME THAT SWEET FOODS JUST

TASTED GROSS.

Lorie: WHILE EATING

TOO MUCH SUGAR IS

DEFINITELY HAZARDOUS,

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS CAN

BE JUST AS A BAD FOR YOU,

MAYBE WORSE.

THAT'S WHY THE HEALTHIEST

SOLUTION IS TO REMOVE ALL

SWEETS FROM YOUR DIET,

BOTH REAL AND FAKE.

LORIE JOHNSON, CBN NEWS.

Andrew: THANK YOU,

LORIE, GREAT REPORT.

I USED TO DRINK DIET

SODAS.

AND THEN I NOTICED THE

MORE I DRANK IT, MY

STOMACH WOULD GET UPSET.

IT WAS A REGULAR ROUTINE.

AND I HAD TO STOP IT.

Terry: I USED TO

DRINK -- I GUESS FOR A

WHILE I DRANK ONE AND THEN

THE OTHER, REGULAR AND

THEN DIET.

AND YOU, YOU KNOW, THEY

ARE THIRST-QUENCHING IN

THAT MOMENT.

AND IT IS HARD TO FIND

SOMETHING THAT REPLACES

THAT --

Andrew: AND IT IS NOT

GOING TO MAKE ME FAT --

Terry: AND NOW TO

FIND THAT OUT, THERE IS NO

JUSTICE.

Andrew: GIVE MY A

GOOD BOWL OF ICE CREAM FOR

THE SWEETS.

Terry: I'M WITH YOU

ON THAT.

BUT THERE ARE LOTS OF

PEOPLE STILL USING

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS.

KNOWING WHAT THEY DO, WE

OUGHT TO CUT THEM OUT.

Andrew: WELL, WE'RE

RAISING AWARENESS TODAY.

ONE IN 200 WOMEN ARE

COLOR-BLIND.

WHILE THAT NUMBER MAY NOT

BE STAGGERING, CONSIDER

THIS, 12% OF MALES, OR

NEARLY 300 MILLION MEN

AROUND THE WORLD HAVE SOME

FORM OF COLOR-BLINDNESS.

AND I HAPPEN TO BE ONE OF

THEM.

NOT A SURPRISE SINCE

YOU'VE SEEN ME DRESS FOR

WORK HERE.

I DON'T SEE ANY NUMBER IN

THERE.

I DON'T SEE ANY NUMBER IN

THERE.

I DON'T SEE ANY NUMBER

THERE.

AS A LITTLE BOY I TOOK A

COLOR-BLINDNESS TEST, AND

IT PROBABLY WASN'T

SOPHISTICATED.

BUT I DID NOT DO WELL.

FROM THEN ON I WAS TOLD,

ANDREW, YOU'RE

COLOR-BLIND, AND SO IS

YOUR BROTHER.

VERY OCCASIONALLY I HAVE

TROUBLE WITH TRAFFIC

LIGHTS AT NIGHT.

THERE WAS ONE EVENING

WHERE I THOUGHT A LIGHT

WAS YELLOW AND IT WAS

ACTUALLY RED, AND I DID

THE QUICK STOP, AND MY

WIFE SAID, WHY DON'T YOU

LET ME TAKE IT FROM HERE.

THESE COLOR-BLINDNESS

TESTS, SOMETIMES I'LL DO

OKAY ON THEM, BUT OTHER

TIMES I DON'T HAVE A CLUE.

THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A

NUMBER IN THIS CIRCLE OF

COLORS, AND VERY OFTEN I

HAVE NO IDEA THAT THERE IS

A NUMBER IN THERE.

I DON'T SEE ANYTHING IN

THERE EITHER, AT ALL.

JUST A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT

COLORS.

IT LOOKS LIKE A SNOW CONE.

I HAD ENOUGH FAMILY

MEMBERS AND EVEN

CO-WORKERS SAYING, YOU'RE

COLOR-BLIND, HAVEN'T YOU

SEEN THESE PEOPLE PUTTING

ON SPECIAL GLASSES AND

SUDDENLY SEEING COLORS.

FOR SOME IT IS VERY

DRAMATIC AND EMOTIONAL.

AND MAYBE IT WILL BE FOR

YOU.

SO WE CONTACTED A COMPANY,

AND SAID, CAN YOU SEND ME

A PAIR OF THESE

COLOR-BLIND GLASSES AND

THEY'VE BEEN HERE FOR

ABOUT TWO WEEKS.

I'VE BEEN WAITING, AND I'M

REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO

SEEING IF THERE IS ANY

DIFFERENCE IN MY VISION

FROM PUTTING THESE ON.

THEY'RE GOING TO BE

STYLISH, AND MAYBE THEY'LL

IMPROVE MY OVERALL LOOK.

ALL RIGHT, HERE THEY ARE.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO

SEEING WHAT THEY DO.

HERE THEY ARE.

HEY, BRADY.

HOW YOU DOING?

I CAN'T LOOK YET.

ALL RIGHT, HERE WE GO.

LET'S SEE.

OH, MY GOSH.

WHAT?

IF THIS IS WHAT I'VE

BEEN MISSING, IT IS REALLY

INCREDIBLE.

IT IS REALLY INCREDIBLE.

WOW!

IT'S SO BRIGHT.

THIS LOOKS -- WHAT COLOR

IS THIS?

THAT LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT

TO ME.

HOW DO I LOOK, BY THE WAY?

THERE IS SOME SORT OF,

LIKE, GOSH -- LIKE THE

LEAVES ON THE TREES LOOK

DIFFERENT.

AND THE WAY THE SKY AND

THE BUILDINGS REFLECT A

LITTLE BIT.

I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO

DESCRIBE IT.

PRETTY COOL.

IT DOES LOOK BRIGHTER,

THE COLORS DO.

Andrew: LET ME SEE IT

ONE MORE TIME.

IT IS NOT LIKE AN

ASTOUNDING DIFFERENCE, BUT

THE COLORS LOOK VERY

DIFFERENT.

THERE IS A WHOLE LOT GOING

ON IN HERE THAT I DIDN'T

SEE BEFORE.

LIKE SHADES OF IT, MAYBE.

IS THIS NAVY BLUE?

I STILL LOVE THAT.

THAT IS STILL MY FAVORITE

COLOR.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE STUDIO

CREW AND MY CO-HOST ARE

MOCKING ME BECAUSE I SAID,

IT IS SO BRIGHT.

[LAUGHTER]

Andrew: IT IS A VERY

DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE.

IN FACT, I DON'T KNOW IF

IT DID CHANGE THE OVER ALL

LOOK.

Terry: I THINK IT IS

VERY HIP.

Andrew: YOU LOOK EVEN

MORE STUNNING, TERRY.

Terry: KEEP THOSE ON.

WHAT IS AMAZING TO ME

ABOUT THAT IS THAT SUCH A

BRIGHT HUGH IN THE LENS

CORRECTS THINGS.

THAT IS SO ODD.

Andrew: I DON'T THINK

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT YOU

SEE, BUT IT IS CERTAINLY

GIVING ME A THE LOT OF

EXPERIENCE THAT I NEVER

HAD BEFORE.

Terry: CAN I SEE

THAT?

Andrew: SURE.

THEY MAY HAVE TO REDO OUR

MAKEUP AFTER THAT.

Terry: WHEN YOU LOOK

THROUGH THESE LIGHTS, ARE

THEY PINK?

Andrew: YES, IT IS

VERY PINKISH.

THE OUTSIDE WAS REALLY

DIFFERENT.

MY KIDS REALLY WANTED ME

TO DO IT.

Terry: DO YOU HAVE

LITTLE TAGS ON YOUR

CLOTHES IN YOUR CLOSET

BECAUSE YOU ARE ALWAYS

COORDINATED --

Andrew: THAT IS SO

NICE OF YOU.

THANK YOU.

MY WIFE IS VERY KIND TO

ME, AND SHE HELPS ME OUT.

I THINK WHEN I WAS

SINGLE --

Terry: YOU BETTER

NEVER TICK HER OFF BECAUSE

YOU'LL BE IN TROUBLE.

Andrew: THERE HAVE

BEEN DAYS WHEN I SAY, DOES

THIS MATCH AND SHE SAYS,

AH.

I WOULD LIKE TO THINK VINO

OPTICS AND THE TECHNOLOGY

THAT MADE THIS POSSIBLE.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO

EXPERIENCE COLOR, GO TO

VINO.VI.

AND UP NEXT, THE SINGER

AND SONGWRITER WHO HELPING

PEOPLE IN HER NEIGHBORHOOD

AND ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

Terry: OUR NEXT GUEST

STARTED SINGING WHEN SHE

WAS JUST TWO YEARS OLD,

AND GAVE HER HEART TO

JESUS WHEN SHE WAS JUST

EIGHT.

SHE WAS WRITING SONGS BY

THE AGE OF 12, AND IT

WASN'T LONG BEFORE SHE

BECAME AN AWARD-WINNING

ARTIST.

*

Reporter: NICOLE C.

MULLEN HAS A DISTINCTIVE

SOUND AND SONGWRITING

ABILITY.

SHE IS BEST KNOWN FOR THE

HIT "REDEEMER."

* REDEEMER

Reporter: AND SHE IS

THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN

ARTIST TO WIN DOVE AWARDS

FOR SONG AND SONGWRITER OF

THE YEAR.

HIS AWARD-WINNING MUSIC

TRANSCENDS CULTURE.

HER NEW ALBUM, "LIKE NEVER

BEFORE," CONTINUES TO

BUILD ON THAT TRADITION.

Terry: NICOLE C.

MULLEN JOINS YOU NOW.

WHAT A TREAT TO HAVE YOU

IN STUDIO WITH US.

THANK YOU.

Terry: YOU GREW UP IN

THE CHURCH, AND YOUR MOM

AND DAD WERE PASTORS --

BEACONS, AND MY

GRANDPARENTS WERE PASTORS.

Terry: WOW, RICH

HERITAGE.

EIGHT, NINE, 10 DAYS A

WEEK, YES.

Terry: IT POWERFULLY

IMPACTED YOUR LIFE.

I WAS READING ABOUT SOME

OF THE THINGS YOU WENT

THROUGH AS A CHILD, WHEN

YOU WENT TO SCHOOL AND

KIDS CALLED YOU HOME MADE.

THAT TEACHING FROM CHURCH

AND HOME HELPED YOU

PROCESS THAT ADJECTIVE --

ABSOLUTELY.

AND MY RELATIONSHIP WITH

JESUS CHRIST.

AND MY PARENTS TEACHING ME

THE VALUE OF WHO I WAS IN

HIM, AND BEING REAFFIRMED

IN CHURCH.

SO WHEN I WAS BEING

INSULTED ON THE BUS ON THE

WAY TO SCHOOL, MY SISTERS

AND I, I COULD SUS STEND

IT BECAUSE THEY COULD ONLY

HURT MY FEELINGS, BUT THEY

CAN'T CHANGE MY DESTINY.

Terry: WHAT WISDOM ON

YOUR PART.

A LOT OF PEOPLE LET THAT

DEFINE THEM.

YEAH.

IT WAS ONE OF THOSE

THINGS.

AND I THINK IT WAS BECAUSE

I WAS YOUNG AND I WOULD

DAILY COMMUNE WITH GOD

BEFORE I WOULD GO TO

SCHOOL.

AND I WOULD SAY, OKAY,

GOD, IF NOBODY ELSE WILL

DO IT, I'LL DO IT.

IF NOBODY ELSE WILL GO,

I'LL GO.

Terry: I NEED A

SESSION WITH YOUR PARENTS.

OUR PARENTS GOT US UP

EVERY MORNING AT 5 a.m.

AND THEY PRAYED WITH US.

SO BEFORE WE WALKED OUT OF

THE DOOR, MY MOM LAID

HANDS ON US TO PRAY FOR

FAVOR AND GUIDANCE.

Terry: YOU WERE

COVERED.

SO WHEN I WAS SITTING

ON THE BUS, I KNEW THAT

GOD WAS GOING TO DO

SOMETHING GREAT.

I DON'T KNOW HOW AND I

DON'T KNOW WHEN, BUT MY

PARENTS SAID, GROWING UP

IN THE CHURCH, HE IS THE

SAME YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND

FOREVER, AND HE DOESN'T

CHANGE.

SO THE SAME THINGS HE DID

IN THE BIBLE, HE CAN STILL

DO.

Terry: YOU HAVE, IN

ADDITION TO YOUR HUGE

SUCCESS MUSICALLY AND

SINGING AND WRITING AND

RECORDING, YOU HAVE

STARTED THESE BABY GIRL

CLUBS AROUND THE COUNTRY.

YES.

Terry: WHEN DID YOU

REALIZE THAT ALL YOUNG

PEOPLE DIDN'T GET WHAT YOU

GOT GROWING UP?

REALLY, I THINK IT HIT

ME WHEN I WAS IN SCHOOL.

THINGS I WOULD TAKE FOR

GRANTED.

MY MOM AND DAD WERE

MARRIED FOR 54 YEARS.

MY DAD AND MOM WORKED THE

SAME JOB FOR 34 YEARS.

WE WEREN'T A PERFECT

FAMILY, BUT MY PARENTS,

THEY WEREN'T HYPOCRITES.

I THOUGHT, IT IS GOOD FOR

ME TO MODEL IT IN FRONT OF

MY OWN CHILDREN.

AND THAT'S WHAT I STILL

AIM TO DO.

BUT THERE ARE OTHER KIDS

WHO NEED THAT SAME KIND OF

A FOUNDATION.

THEY NEED THE AUNTIES TO

COME ALONGSIDE AND DO IT

IF THE PARENTS CAN'T, OR

THE UNCLES.

SO TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT

AND INSPIRE OTHER WOMEN

AND MEN TO SAY, I'M GOING

TO JOIN ARMS WITH SOMEONE

YOUNGER THAN ME AND I'M

GOING TO MENTOR THEM, AND

I'VE SEEN THEIR LIVES

CHANGE BECAUSE OF IT --

BOTH OF THEIR LIVES.

Terry: THE WORLD IS

JUST ATTACKING WHO THE

YOUNG PEOPLE WERE CREATED

TO BE, THEIR IMAGE AND

LIKENESS TO GOD, THEIR

CREATOR, AND JUST THAT

SENSE OF SIGNIFICANCE IN

THEM.

THEY NEED THAT SENSE OF

SELF, WHO AM I AND WHY AM

I.

IT ONLY COMES IN THE

PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST.

IN ESSENCE, THEY REALLY

NEED A RELATIONSHIP.

NOT A LIST OF ROLES.

THEY DON'T NEED RELIGION;

THEY NEED A RELATIONSHIP

WITH JESUS CHRIST.

THEY NEED OTHER PEOPLE

COME AROUND THEM AND SAY,

LET ME HELP YOU WALK THIS

OUT.

THEY JUST NEED US TO SAY,

THIS IS HOW WE LIVE OUT

THE WORD.

Terry: SO WHAT DO YOU

DO IN YOUR BABY GIRLS'

CLUB?

WE'LL SING IN SOME OF

THEM.

SOME OF THEM WE DANCE.

WE MEMORIES SCRIPTURE.

WE EAT --

Terry: IT IS

FELLOWSHIP?

EXACTLY.

AND WE GET INVOLVED IN

EACH OTHER'S LIVES,

REALLY.

IT IS NOT HARD.

IT IS SO EASY TO DO THAT I

THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE MISS

IT BECAUSE THEY THINK IT

IS SOMETHING THAT HAS TO

BE HARD OR YOU HAVE TO

HAVE A LOT OF MONEY OR BE

FAMOUS TO DO IT.

YOU DON'T.

Terry: HOW DOES ONE

START ONE OF THESE?

BECAUSE YOU CAN'T LEAD ALL

OF THEM.

DO YOU FIND SOMEONE WITH

THE SAME PASSION YOU

HAVE --

YES.

TAKE THIS AS A BLUEPRINT.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO IT

EXACTLY.

YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK FOR

WHERE YOU ARE AT IN YOUR

CULTURE AND THE LANGUAGE

THAT YOU SPEAK.

THESE ARE WHAT I'VE SEEN

THAT REALLY DO WORK.

I TRY TO HELP THEM GET

STARTED, AND THEN I FAN

THE FLAME AND SAY, DO WHAT

YOU'RE CALLED TO DO.

WE HAVE A MODEL IN THE

COUNTRY OF ZAMBIA AND

BALESE, IN THE DOMINICAN

REPUBLIC.

SO IF THEY'RE INTERESTED,

THEY CAN REACH OUT TO US

ATNicoleCMullen.com.

AND WE'RE DOING A

CONFERENCE ON

SEPTEMBER 8th AND 9th.

WE'RE DOING THIS AND WE'RE

GOING TO GET TOGETHER AND

WE'RE GOING TO LOVE ON

EACH OTHER AND WE'RE GOING

TO SHARE OUR STORIES.

AND WE'RE GOING TO LISTEN

TO THE VOICE OF THE LORD

AS HE CALLS US BACK TO

LIFE IN THESE AREAS THAT

WE'VE BEEN BATTERED AND

BRUISED AND WOUNDED.

Terry: I LOVE YOUR

CONCEPT OF CALLING US

BACK.

BECAUSE SCRIPTURE SAYS

WE'VE BEEN CALLED

DISSIPATE AND DESERTED,

BUT GOD GIVES US A NEW

NAME.

SO YOU CAN WALK IN THE

FREEDOM OF THAT.

YOU HAVE A NEW RELEASE

COMING OUT "LIKE NEVER

BEFORE."

"LIKE NEVER BEFORE."

AND WE NEED TO SING AND

LOVE THE LORD LIKE NEVER

BEFORE.

THE ALBUM IS A

CELEBRATION.

Terry: WHETHER WE

SING LIKE YOU OR NOT, IT'S

OUR CALLING.

WE SHOULD JOIN IN AND MAKE

A JOYFUL NOISE.

NICOLE'S CONFERENCE BEGINS

NEXT MONTH.

GET YOUR NAME IN THERE.

YOU CAN CHECK OUT ALL OF

THAT AT cbn.com AND IF

YOU'D LIKE MORE

INFORMATION AND DATES

WHERE SHE'LL BE THROUGHOUT

THE YEAR.

AND SHE IS SAID FOR AN

ALBUM RELEASE IN

SEPTEMBER.

BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD IT OR

PICK UP A COPY WHEREVER

MUSIC IS SOLD, AS SOON AS

IT IS RELEASED.

GREAT IN THE CAR.

YAY!

Terry: IT'S GREAT TO

HAVE YOU HERE.

> COMING UP, A

7-YEAR-OLD BOY IS HIT WITH

THE HARD TRUTH AND

STRUGGLES TO COPE.

I REMEMBER THREATENING

SUICIDE.

I REMEMBER LAYING IN THE

MIDDLE OF THE STREET JUST

HOPING CARS WOULD HIT ME.

I WASN'T SURE HOW TO COPE

WITH THAT FEELING OF

EMPTINESS.

Terry: FIND OUT HOW

HE FINALLY FOUND PEACE,

Andrew: WELL, MICHAEL

SHONING JUST WANTED TO

BELONG.

FROM THE TIME HE WAS A

LITTLE BOY, KNOWING WHO HE

WAS AND HE HAD A FAMILY

WAS ALL THAT MATTERED.

AT THE AGE OF SEVEN, HIS

WORLD WAS TURNED UPSIDE

DOWN.

THERE WAS A LARGE PART

OF MY CHILDHOOD THAT WAS

ENVELOPED BY A FEELING OF

NOT REALLY BELONGING TO

SOMETHING.

IT WAS JUST A PURE SENSE

OF BELONGING THAT I REALLY

WAS CRAVING.

Reporter: MICHAEL

SHONING WAS SEVEN YEARS

OLD WHEN HE FOUND OUT HIS

MOM'S HUSBAND, THE MAN HE

CALLED DAD, WAS NOT HIS

REAL FATHER.

I REMEMBER LASHING OUT.

I REMEMBER RUNNING AWAY.

I REMEMBER THREATENING

SUICIDE.

I REMEMBER LAYING IN THE

MIDDLE OF THE STREET JUST

HOPING CARS WOULD HIT ME.

I WASN'T SURE HOW TO COPE

WITH THAT FEELING OF

EMPTINESS, THAT FEELING OF

SOMETHING THAT I DIDN'T

HAVE.

Reporter: A SHORT

TIME LATER, A FRIEND

INVITED MICHAEL TO CHURCH,

WHERE HE PRAYED TO BECOME

A CHRISTIAN.

AND AT THAT MOMENT, I

HAD THE CREATOR OF THE

UNIVERSE AS MY FATHER, AND

THAT WAS JUST AN AMAZING

FEELING.

I JUST BECAME PLUGGED INTO

A HUGE FAMILY, AND THAT'S

WHAT I REALLY WANTED, WAS

THAT FEELING OF BEING PART

OF A BIG FAMILY.

Reporter: WHILE THE

CHURCH GAVE MICHAEL A

SENSE OF FAMILY, PLAYING

WORSHIP MUSIC BROUGHT HIM

CLOSER TO GOD.

MUSIC FOR ME WAS

ANOTHER DIMENSION, LIKE

ANOTHER WORLD THAT I COULD

ENTER INTO AND WORSHIP

GOD.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERED.

EVERYTHING ELSE FADED

AWAY.

Reporter: THEN WHEN

MICHAEL WAS 18, A CLOSE

FRIEND WAS KILLED IN A CAR

ACCIDENT.

IT REALLY MADE ME

QUESTION GOD FOR THE FIRST

TIME.

HOW CAN A BELIEVER IN HIM

JUST BE GONE, JUST LIKE

THAT.

I DIDN'T GET IT.

I WAS ANGRY AT GOD, BUT I

WAS MORE SO REALLY

CONFUSED ABOUT WHY GOD

WOULD LET SOMETHING LIKE

THAT HAPPEN.

Reporter: THE NIGHT

OF THE FUNERAL, MICHAEL

WENT TO HANG OUT WITH SOME

MUTUAL FRIENDS.

THE WAY THAT WE COPED

AT THAT TIME WAS BASICALLY

JUST GETTING DRUNK.

BASICALLY JUST GETTING

HIGH, GETTING DRUNK,

TRYING TO GET THE NUMBNESS

SO WE'RE NOT FEELING THE

PAIN OF OUR FRIEND THAT

JUST PASSED.

THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN

MY LIFE THAT I'D BEEN

STONED, THAT I HAD BEEN

DRUNK.

Reporter: AND IT

WASN'T THE LAST.

BEFORE LONG, MICHAEL LEFT

HIS HOME AND HIS CHURCH.

HE GOT INTO THE LOCAL

MUSIC SCENE WHERE HE FOUND

ANOTHER FAMILY AND PLENTY

OF DRUGS.

I WAS TRYING TO GET

THAT FEELING AGAIN THROUGH

DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, THAT I

WAS WHEN I WAS WORSHIPPING

GOD.

BUT I KNEW IN THE BACK OF

MY MIND THAT IT IS GOING

TO WEAR OFF.

THE NEXT MORNING I WOULD

STILL HAVE A HOLE IN MY

SOUL THAT I DIDN'T FILL.

SO I'M JUST GOING TO HAVE

FUN.

I'M JUST GOING TO PARTLY.

I'M GOING TO PRETEND LIKE

I'M SOMEONE I'M NOT.

Reporter: BUT THE

PARTY CAME TO AN END WHEN

A FLOOD HAPPENED.

I LOST MY APARTMENT, MY

CAR, MY JOB.

WHEN I DIDN'T HAVE DRUGS,

I DIDN'T HAVE AN

APARTMENT.

THEY WERE JUST GONE.

Reporter: MICHAEL

FELT HE HAD NOWHERE TO GO

AND NO ONE TO TURN TO.

I SLEPT IN THE BACK OF

CARS, I SLEPT IN ABANDONED

HOMES.

I WAS SO TAINTED, SO

DIRTY, SO FILTHY.

GOD IS NOT GOING TO WANT A

TAINTED CHILD BACK INTO

HIS KINGDOM.

I WAS A HOMELESS DRUG

ADDICT.

THAT'S WHAT I WAS.

Reporter: ONE NIGHT

MICHAEL MET A YOUTH PASTOR

ON THE STREET, WHO GAVE

HIM A ROOM IN THE CHURCH

ATTIC.

HE GAVE HIM A BIBLE, AND

HE STARTED READING.

I WAS SITTING AT THE

BOTTOM OF THE PIT.

THERE IS NO LADDER OR

ROPE.

AND I PUT THE BIBLE ON ME,

OVER MY HEART.

AND I SAID, GOD, HOW DID I

GET HERE?

AND I REMEMBER HIM SAYING

TO ME THAT HE DIDN'T

LEAVE.

EVEN THOUGH I TURNED MY

BACK ON HIM, HE REALLY LET

ME KNOW THAT HE NEVER

LEFT.

HE WAS THERE THE WHOLE

TIME.

AND HE KEPT ME ALIVE.

HE NEVER TORE UP THAT

CONTRACT, THAT OFFER OF

SALVATION.

HE WAS JUST WAITING FOR ME

TO COME BACK.

I FELT LIKE I WAS HOME

AGAIN.

Reporter: MICHAEL

STOPPED DOING DRUGS AND

REDISCOVERED GOD'S GRACE

AND PEACE.

HE EVENTUALLY BECAME THE

YOUTH PASTOR IN THE CHURCH

WHERE HE HAD BEEN STAYING.

TODAY HE IS MARRIED AND NO

LONGER HAS TO QUESTION

WHERE HE BELONGS.

WHEN I CAME BACK, I

SAID, LOOK, I'VE DONE ALL

OF THIS STUFF.

CAN I PLEASE JUST SERVE

YOU?

AND THEN HE PUTS A ROBE

AROUND YOU, AND YOU PUTS A

RING ON MY FINGER AND PUTS

SHOES ON MY FEET.

GOD SAYS, LOOK, MIKE, I'VE

BEEN WAITING FOR YOU TO

COME BACK.

YOU'VE ALWAYS BEEN MY SON

AND I'VE ALWAYS BEEN YOUR

FATHER.

Andrew: THAT MAY

SOUND FAMILIAR TO YOU AT

THE END, WHEN MICHAEL WAS

TALKING ABOUT THE ROBE.

THAT'S THE PRODIGAL SON.

THE ILLUSTRATION THAT

JESUS USED TO TALK ABOUT

HOW FATHER GOD WELCOMES US

BACK INTO HIS FAMILY WITH

CELEBRATION.

YOU MAY BE LIKE MICHAEL

AND SAY I'M TOO DIRTY, I'M

TOO TAINTED FOR GOD TO

TAKE ME BACK.

BUT IN THAT PRODIGAL SON

STORY, WE SEE FATHER GOD

RUNNING TO US, EMBRACING

US.

THERE IS NO CONDEMNATION

FOR THOSE IN JESUS CHRIST.

IF YOU'RE IN A SITUATION

WHERE YOU'RE SAYING, GOD,

I'VE WANDERED FROM YOU,

AND I'VE TRIED OTHER WAYS

OF COPING.

FOR SOME IT IS DRUGS, SOME

SOME IT IS ALCOHOL, AND

FOR SOME IT IS ISOLATION.

YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT THE

ENEMY LIES TO YOU AND SAYS

THAT GOD DOESN'T WANT YOU

BACK, THAT YOU'VE BLOWN

IT, YOUR CHANCE IS OVER.

I'M HERE TO TELL YOU TODAY

THE GOOD NEWS THAT JESUS

CHRIST MAKES RELATIONSHIP

WITH OUR HEAVENLY FATHER

POSSIBLE BECAUSE GOD WILL

CELEBRATE.

DON'T HESITATE.

DON'T BE FEARFUL TO SAY,

LORD, I WANT TO COME BACK

TO YOU.

I WANT TO SURRENDER MY

LIFE TO YOU.

BECAUSE THE ENEMY WILL LIE

TO YOU AND SAY THAT'S NOT

POSSIBLE.

BUT IT IS.

LET'S PRAY NOW IF YOU'RE

IN THAT SITUATION.

HEAVENLY FATHER, I'VE

WANDERED AWAY.

I'VE LEFT YOU.

THANK YOU FOR THIS STORY

I'VE HEARD.

HOW A MAN IN A SIMILAR

SITUATION REDISCOVERED THE

LOVE AND GRACE OF JESUS

CHRIST.

THANK YOU, JESUS, FOR YOUR

WORK ON THE CROSS, THE

BLOOD YOU SHED FOR US.

WHERE YOU MAKE SALVATION

POSSIBLE.

IT IS NOTHING WE CAN EARN.

IT IS BECAUSE OF JESUS'

SACRIFICE THAT MAKES

RELATIONSHIP WITH FATHER

GOD POSSIBLE.

THANK YOU, LORD, FOR

HEAVING LOVING ME.

IN JESUS' NAME.

AMEN.

IF YOU'D LIKE FURTHER

PRAYER IN YOUR LIFE, GIVE

US A CALL AS

1-800-700-7000.

WE'D LOVE TO PRAY FOR YOU.

> WE LEAVE YOU WITH

PSALM 68: 5: "A FATHER OF

THE FATHERLESS, A DEFENDER

OF WIDOWS, IS GOD IN HIS

HOLY HABITATION."
