Dove Award Winning Artist Nicole C. Mullen discusses how to forgive after walking through hurt and betrayal. Read Transcript

SHE SHOT AND KILLED

HIM.

WHEN THAT GUNSHOT WENT

OFF, I WAS NO LONGER HIGH.

Gordon: A DRUG DEALER

COMES TO HIS SENSES A

LITTLE TOO LATE.

LIFE WAS OVER AS I KNEW

IT.

SIGNING PAPERS THAT SAID

FIRST-DEGREE MURDER, AND

REALIZING HOW SIGNIFICANT

THAT WAS.

Gordon: FIND OUT WHY

HE SAID...

MY PRISON EXPERIENCE --

I WOULD NEVER REPLACE IT.

I WOULD NEVER REPLACE IT.

Gordon: ON TODAY'S

"700 CLUB INTERACTIVE."

> WELL, WELCOME TO THE

SHOW.

THE WINTER OLYMPICS ARE

UNDER WAY IN SOUTH KOREA.

IF YOU'RE ONE OF THE

ESTIMATED 20 MILLION

AMERICANS THAT WILL TUNE

IN, YOU PROBABLY ALREADY

HAVE A FAVORITE EVENT, OR

MAYBE EVEN A FAVORITE

ATHLETE.

Terry: I'M ONE OF THE

20 MILLION.

WE WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT

A PAIR OF ATHLETES THAT

ASPIRE TO OLYMPIC GOLD,

BUT FIRST ASPIRE TO LOVE

GOD.

ALEXA AND CHRIS ARE

PARTNERS IN OLYMPIC

FIGURESKATING AND A

MARRIED COUPLE.

NOT LONG AFTER THEIR 2016

WEDDING, ALEXA UNDERWENT

THREE SURGERIES.

THROUGH IT ALL, THEIR

FAITH NEVER WAVERED.

SHE POSTED ON INSTAGRAM:

"I MAY HAVE LOST A LOT OF

FAITH IN MYSELF, BUT MY

FAITH GREW IN GOD.

I HAVE SOME INSECURITIES I

DIDN'T HAVE BEFORE, BUT

I'M ABLE TO WORK THROUGH

IT BECAUSE I SHIFTED MY

FOCUS AND MY ATTENTION TO

MY FAITH INSTEAD OF

MYSELF."

THE AMAZING NEWS, THE

COUPLE FOUGHT LONG ODDS

JUST TO QUALIFY FOR THE

OLYMPICS, AND EARLIER THIS

WEEK THEY WON THE BRONZE

MEDAL.

Gordon:

CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM.

TALK ABOUT PERSEVERING

THERE ADVERSITY.

THAT IS DEFINITELY DOING

IT.

JUST TO MAKE THE OLYMPIC

TEAM, AND THEN TO GO ON TO

GET A BRONZE MEDAL.

Terry: TO BRING

SOMETHING HOME IS PRETTY

WONDERFUL.

Gordon: WE ALL KNOW

THE DEDICATION AND

SACRIFICE IT TAKES TO

REACH THE OLYMPICS.

ONE WASHINGTON BOY'S

VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM

SACRIFICED THEIR SEASON IN

SUPPORT OF THEIR TEAMMATE.

Terry: CORY'S FATHER

SUFFERED A STROKE LAST

SPRING, AND DOCTORS

DISCOVERED A WHOLE I HOLE IN HIS

HEART THAT REQUIRED

SURGERY, AND IT HAPPENED

TO BE THE SAME DAY AT

CORY'S PLAYOFF GAME.

CORY AND HIS TEAM WERE ON

A FERRY HEADED TO THE

GAME, WHEN CORY DECIDED HE

WANTED TO BE WITH HIS

FAMILY.

THE TEAM CHOSE TO GET CORY

TO THE HOSPITAL, EVEN

THOUGH IT WOULD MEAN THEY

WOULD FORFEIT THE GAME.

THE TEAM'S COACH SAID HE

COULDN'T BE MORE PROUD.

THE TEAM DIDN'T EVEN

HESITATE AND UNANIMOUSLY

SAID, LET'S TAKE CORY

DOWN.

I'M VERY PROUD OF THE

DECISION THAT THE GUYS

MADE TO GIVE UP WHAT

THEY'VE BEEN WORKING FOR

FOR ONE OF THE OTHER

PLAYERS.

IF WE HAD GONE AND

PLAYED THE GAME, IN THE

NEXT FIVE YEARS, WE

PROBABLY WOULD HAVE

FORGOTTEN THE GAME.

BUT DOING WHAT WE DID,

WE'LL REMEMBER THAT MOMENT

FOR, LIKE, EVER.

Gordon: YOU

ABSOLUTELY WILL REMEMBER

THAT FOREVER.

WHAT A GREAT THING FOR THE

TEAM TO DO, TO COME

THROUGH FOR IM.

HIM.

> WHEN PUSH COMES TO

SHOV, OLDER SIBLINGS OFTEN

STAND UP FOR THEIR YOUNGER

SIBLINGS.

14-YEAR-OLD HARRY HAS A

STAMMER AND BECOMES

FRUSTRATED WHEN HE CAN'T

USE THE WORDS HE WANTS, SO

HIS LITTLE SISTER MADE A

BOOK MARK TO BRIGHTEN HIS

DAY.

WHEN EMILY'S MOTHER FOUND

OUT ABOUT HER GIFT, SHE

WAS MOVED TO TEARS.

AND SHTHE BOOK MARK SAID:

"DON'T MAKE HIM FEEL BAD

FOR STAMMERING.

DO NOT FINISH HIS WORD.

DO GIVE HIM TIME TO FINISH

HIS WORD."

Terry: SHE KNOWS WHAT

HER BROTHER MOST WANTS.

SOMETIMES YOU FEEL

UNCOMFORTABLE FOR THE

PERSON SEARCHING FOR

WORDS.

IT'S GOOD TO KNOW, JUST

RELAX.

THEY'LL GET TO IT.

Gordon: JUST GIVE IT

TIME.

THERE IS NO HURRY AT ALL.

> A MILWAUKEE POLICE

OFFICER IS BEING COMMENDED

AFTER ENLISTING THE HELP

OF A CIVILIAN AT A METAL

DETECTOR.

LAST FRIDAY A WOMAN FILED

A LOST PROPERTY REPORT

AFTER SHE DROPPED HIR DWOPPED HER DROPPED
HER

WEDDING RING IN THE SNOW.

Terry: SHE SEARCHED

AND SEARCHED, AND COULDN'T

FIND IT.

THIS MAN CALLED HIS FATHER

WHO OWNS A METAL DETECTOR,

AND THEY FOUND IT AND

RETURNED IT TO ITS

RIGHTFUL PLACE, WHICH IS

THE LEFT-HAND OF THAT VERY

DESERVING WOMAN.

Gordon:

SEPTEMBER 2017 WAS THE BIS

EAST MONTH OF HURRICANE

ACTIVITY ON RECORD.

HURRICANE'S HARVEY AND

IRMA DESTROYED PORTIONS OF

TEXAS AS WELL AS THE

CARRIBEAN.

Terry: THERE WAS A

CYCLONE THAT HIT TONGA AS

A CATEGORY FOUR.

IT IS THE MOST POWERFUL

STORM THAT HAS EVER HIT

THE ISLANDS, AND HAS

CAUSED WIDESPREAD DAMAGE.

BEFORE THE STORM, AS THE

TONGAN PEOPLE PREPARED FOR

THE WORST, ONE WOMAN

POSTED A VIDEO OF PRAISE

AND WORSHIP.

*

*

Terry: BOY, THEY KNEW

HOW TO PRAISE IN TONGA.

THANKFULLY NO INJURIES OR

DEATHS HAVE BEEN REPORTED,

BUT IT IS GOING TO TAKE

SOME TIME TO RETURN TO

NORMALCY, SE W SO WE CAN BE

PRAYING FOR THEM.

Gordon: PRAISE IN THE

MIDDLE OF THE STORM,

THAT'S A BIBLICAL THING TO

DO.

Terry: WE'RE GOING TO

TALK ABOUT THAT SOME MORE.

> UP NEXT, THE DOVE

AWARD-WINNING ARTIST WHO

KNOWS HER REDEEMER LIVES.

FIND OUT HOW NICOLE C.

MULLEN IS USING HER OWN

PAST BETRAYAL AND HURT TO

HELP OTHERS, RIGHT AFTER

THIS.

Terry: MOST OF US

LOOK AT CELEBRITIES AND

MUSICIANS AND THINK, THEY

MUST HAVE IT ALL TOGETHER.

NICOLE C. MULLEN HAS

REACHED THE HEIGHTS OF

MUSICAL SUCCESS, AND YET

SHE HAS ALSO FACED SOME

DARK AND TRYING TIMES.

BUT THAT HASN'T STOPPED

HER FROM BEING A

GROUNDBREAKING FORCE IN

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.

Reporter: NICOLE C.

MULLEN HAS A DISTINCTIVE

SOUND AND SONGWRITING

ABILITY.

SHE IS BEST KNOWN FOR THE

HIT "REDEEMER."

* MY REDEEMER LIVES

Reporter: AND IS THE

FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN

ARTIST TO WIN DOVE WARDS

FOAWARDSFOR SONG AND SONGWRITER OF

THE YEAR.

HER MUSIC TRANSCENDS

CULTURE.

HER NEW ALBUM, "LIKE NEVER

BEFORE," CONTINUES TO

BUILD ON THAT TRADITION.

Terry: WELL, YAY!

SHE IS HERE WITH US.

IT IS SO WONDERFUL TO HAVE

YOU HERE.

SO GREAT TO BE BACK.

Terry: NICOLE, ONE OF

THE THINGS THAT YOUR FANS

LOVE ABOUT YOU THE MOST,

AND THAT WE APPRECIATE YOU

AS SWELL WELL, IS YOUR

WILLINGNESS TO BE

VULNERABLE AND HONEST AND

OPEN ABOUT WHO YOU ARE.

THAT HAS TO IMPACT THE

KIND OF MUSIC THAT YOU

WRITE?

YES.

YOU KNOW WHAT, I THINK MY

GET MY CUES FROM, LIKE,

EVEN THE WOMAN AT THE

WELL.

JESUS SHOWS UP, AND HE IS

TALKING TO HER -- YOU

ALREADY KNOW THIS, BUT HE

TELLS HER ABOUT HERSELF.

AND SHE SAYS, IN TRUTH,

WHAT YOU SAID IS CORRECT.

AND THEN JESUS TURNS

AROUND AND SAYS, THE

FATHER IS LOOKING FOR

THOSE WHO WORSHIP HIM IN

SPIRIT AND IN TRUTH.

I'M ENCOURAGED TO SAY,

THIS IS WHO I AM.

THESE ARE MY STORIES, AND

CHRIST STILL RECEIVES ME

AND HE CAN STILL USE ME.

AND WHEN I DO THAT, I CAN

REALLY WORSHIP FREELY

BECAUSE I'M NOT FAKE.

Terry: ABSOLUTELY.

THE OTHER THING ABOUT THE

WOMAN AT THE WELL IS, HE

STAYED AND TALKED WITH HER

AND THEN HE RELEASED HER

TO GO START OVER.

THAT'S THE MINISTRY.

Terry: GOD GIVES US

BEAUTY FOR ASHES IF WE'LL

GIVE HIM THE ASHES FIRST.

HOW HAS THAT HAPPENED IN

YOUR OWN LIFE?

EVEN AFTER MY MARITAL

STATUS CHANGE -- IS WHAT I

CALL IT -- JUST BEING A

PART OF -- BEING IN A

NIGHT SEASON FOR A WHILE,

YOU KNOW?

SEEING HOW WHEN I OPENED

UP MY HEART, WHEN I

ADDRESSED THE PAIN, AND

IED SAID, OKAYIOWAISAID, I'M NOT GOING TO
GO

OFF THE DEEP END, BUT I'M

GOING TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT

THIS HURTS.

AND, LORD, CAN YOU DO

SOMETHING WITH THESE

ASHES.

AND HE WAS ABLE TO TAKE

THE ASHES AND SAID, LET ME

BREATHE ON THEM.

LET ME REVIVE YOU.

AND SO AS I YIELDED -- AND

IN THE YIELDING, SOMETIMES

IT IS PAINFUL.

HE WAS ABLE TO TAKE AWAY,

AND HE WAS ABLE TO

REPLACE.

Terry: YOU MENTIONED

SEASONS OF YOUR LIVE.

THERE IS A TIME WHEN WE

HAVE TO JUST KIND OF SIT

IN THE ASHES FOR A LITTLE

BIT WHILE GOD SPEAKS THE

OUR HEARTS AND PREPARES US

FOR A CHANGE.

YES.

Terry: HOW DID YOU

ENDURE THAT?

REALLY, WITH THE PEOPLE

OF GOD, WITH THE WORD OF

GOD, WITH SONGS.

SONGS FROM OTHER PEOPLE.

SONGS THAT HE GAVE ME.

THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY I

GOT THROUGH IT.

I WENT BACK AND I LOOKED

IN MY JOURNAL, AND I HAD

GONE THROUGH A LONG

SEASON, AND I THOUGHT, I'M

GOING TO FIND ME SCREAMING

AND HOLLERING THROUGH ALL

OF THIS.

BUT WHEN I READ BAC BACK TO READ

IT, I SAID, OH, GOD, HEAR

MY PRAYER.

AND I THOUGHT, OH, THIS IS

HOW I DID IT.

AND IT IS ALSO HOW JOB IN

THE BIBLE DID IT.

Terry: IT IS LIKE

YOU'RE PRAYING THE WORD OF

GOD BACK TO HIM.

AND IN DOING THAT,

SOMETHING IS RELEASED INTO

THE ATMOSPHERE, AS WELL AS

IN YOUR OWN BEING.

ABSOLUTELY.

I THINK IT IS A WAY TO

STIR UP THAT JOY AGAIN,

STIR UP THAT HOPE AGAIN,

STIR UP THAT LOVE AGAIN.

AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT,

RESURRECTION IN LIFE HAS

TAKEN PLACE, REDEMPTION.

Terry: TALK ABOUT HOW

OTHER PEOPLE REACTED WHEN

THAT ANNOUNCEMENT WAS MADE

BECAUSE SOMETIMES -- I

DON'T MEAN TO BASH THE

CHURCH AT ALL, BUT WHEN IT

COMES TO DIVORCE,

SOMETIMES LINES ARE SO

BLACK AND WHITE.

BUT WHEN YOU'RE IN A

SITUATION YOU DIDN'T WANT,

AND YOU PRAYED AND FASTED

TO HAVE CHANGED -- BUT

YOU'RE IN IT AND THERE IS

NO CHOICE.

HOW DID PEOPLE REACT TO

YOU?

OVER ALL, MOST PEOPLE

WERE REALLY GRACIOUS.

AND I THANK GOD TO THAT.

HOWEVER, WHEN PEOPLE DON'T

KNOW, THEY CAN JUMP TO THE

WRONG CONCLUSION, ASSUMING

YOU HAVE NOT PRAYED, YOU

HAVE NOT STAYED, AND I

SAY, NO.

THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE

EAGER TO THROW STONES.

AND I THINK AS WE WERE

DISCUSSING EARLIER, GOING

BACK TO CHURCH WAS A

LITTLE DIFFICULT -- EVEN

THOUGH I GO TO A WONDERFUL

CHURCH -- I LOVE MY

CHURCH.

BUT EVEN NOW AS A SINGLE

WOMAN, GOING BACK TO

CHURCH, I REMEMBER

INITIALLY I WAS WONDERING,

ARE THEY LOOKING AT ME

THINKING, WHAT DID SHE DO?

AND WHY IS SHE BY HERSELF?

IS THERE A TARGET ON MY

BACK?

SHOULD I WEAR MY RINGS?

SHOULD I NOT?

Terry: THEY SHOULD

SAY, HOW IS SHE HANDLING

ALL OF THIS?

AND THEY WERE SO

GRACIOUS, BUT I HAD SO

MANY QUESTIONS.

AND I THOUGHT, IF I'M

GOING THROUGH THIS, HOW IS

IT FOR OTHER SINGLE MOMS,

WHO DIDN'T HAVE THE FAMILY

UNIT, THE SUPPORT TRE?

HOW DO THEY DO IT?

67% OF SINGLE MOTHERS DO

NOT GO TO CHURCH BECAUSE

THEY FEEL LIKE THEY'LL BE

MARGINALIZED OR ACCUSED OR

OSTRACIZED.

Terry: WHEN YOU ARE

GOING THROUGH ANY KIND OF

PAIN LIKE THAT, YOU FEEL

LIKE A GIANT LIGHT IS

SHINING DOWN ON YOU.

AND PEOPLE MAY NOT EVEN

BE THINKING ABOUT YOU.

Terry: WE WERE

TALKING ABOUT GOD TURNING

YOUR ASHES INTO SOMETHING

BEAUTIFUL.

HOW HAS WHAT YOU'VE GONE

THROUGH IMPACTED YOUR NEW

RELEASE LIKE NEVER BEFORE?

THROUGH IT, SONGS HAVE

BEEN BIRTHED.

SONGS OF HOPE, SONGS OF

JOY, SONGS OF PAIN --

SONGS THAT ADDRESS THE

ISSUE BUT AT THE SAME TIME

SAYS EVEN THOUGH THIS IS

WHAT I'VE GONE THROUGH,

YOUR LOVE IS GREATER

STILL.

YOU WILL STILL REDEEM THE

DAY BECAUSE YOU ARE OUR

CHAMPION.

I WAS ABLE TO WRITE ABOUT

IT, AND I WAS ABLE TO

PRODUCE ON IT AND PUT IT

TOGETHER.

AND IT TOOK A WHILE, ABOUT

A SEVEN-YEAR PROCESS.

Terry: YOU'RE NOT

CRANKING IT OUT.

YOU'RE LIVING IT OUT.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE?

IT IS HARD TO PICK A

FAVORITE -- IT'S LIKE

PICKING YOUR FAVORITE

CHILD.

PROBABLY "GREATER STILL"

WOULD BE THE ONE.

Terry: CULTURALLY, IT

IS A POWERFUL MESSAGE TO

ALL OF US.

HAD A CHANCE TO SING IN A

CHURCH CLOSE TO THE CHURCH

IN SOUTH CAROLINA, WHERE

THAT SHOOTING TOOK PLACE.

WE ARE ONE BY LOVE, AND

I ENCOURAGE THEM TO STEP

OUT OF YOUR SEAT, STEP OUT

O OF YOUOUTOF YOUR ROW, AND GET TO

KNOW SOMEBODY WHO LOOKS

DIFFERENT THAN YOU,

SOMEONE YOU DON'T ALREADY

KNOW.

AND TO CUDDLE AND LAUGH

AND PRAY OVER EACH OTHER

WAS HEALING.

IF WE AGREE UPON THE BLOOD

OF JESUS, AND HIM LOVING

US AND US BEING REDEEMED

BY HIM, THEN WE ARE A PART

OF THE SAME FAMILY.

ONE MIGHT BE THE ARM AND

THE OTHER THE LEG, BUT

WE'RE ALL NEEDED.

Terry: THE FACT THAT

JESUS PRAYED THAT PRAYER

MUST HAVE KNOWN IT WAS

GOING TO BE A CHALLENGE.

YES.

Terry: IT IS SO

EXCITING.

AND SO IS YOUR NEW

RELEASE.

HER LATEST ALBUM IS CALLED

"LIKE NEVER BEFORE."

AND YOU CAN GET IT

WHEREVER MUSIC IS SOLD.

ALWAYS GREAT TO HAVE YOU

HERE.

ALWAYS GREAT TO BE

HERE.

THANK YOU.

Gordon: UP NEXT, HE

WAS AN ACCCOMPLICE TO

MURDER.

SHE SHOT AND KILLED

HIM.

WHEN THAT GUNSHOT WENT

OFF, I WAS NO LONGER HIGH.

EVERYTHING CHANGED IN AN

INSTANT.

Gordon: SEE HOW

DRASTICALLY IT CHANGED,

RIGHT AFTER THIS.

Gordon: FIRST-DEGREE

MURDER, IT IS ONE OF THE

MOST SERIOUS CRIMINAL

CHARGES IN THE BOOKS.

AND IT STARED CARL

DULINSKY IN THE FACE.

AT JUST 19 YEARS OLD, HE

ALMOST THREW HIS LIFE AWAY

TO HELP SOMEONE END

ANOTHER.

Reporter: CARL

DULINSKY GREW UP IN CHAOS

AND INSECURITY.

HIS MOTHER WAS A DRUG USER

AND AN ALCOHOLIC.

CONSTANT DRUG

ADDICTION, ALL THE WAY TO

HEROIN AND THINGS OF THAT

NATURE.

ALCOHOLISM, YOU NAME IT,

SITTING IN FRONT OF BARS,

LOCKED IN A CAR, WITH THE

WINDOWS DOWN, WAITING FOR

HER TO COME BACK IN AND

GET US.

YOU JUST HOPE THERE IS

FOOD TOMORROW.

Reporter: HIS FATHER

MANUFACTURED DRUGS FOR

ORGANIZED CRIME.

THERE WERE BE NIGHTS

THAT WE WEREN'T SURE IF

SOMEONE WAS COMING OVER TO

DO DAMAGE TO OUR FAMILY.

SO WE STAYED UP ALL NIGHT.

NOTHING CAME THAT NIGHT,

AND WE STARTED THE NEXT

DAY AND MOVED FORWARD WITH

LIFE AS IF NOTHING EVER

HAPPENED.

Reporter: HIS PARENTS

DIVORCED WHEN HE WAS

YOUNG, AND HE MOVED FROM

ONE RELATIVE'S HOUSE TO

ANOTHER WITH HIS MOM.

THE CHAOS CARL SAYS HE

QUIT FEELING.

I DECIDED I WAS GOING

TO SHUT OFF ALL EMOTIONS

BECAUSE EMOTIONS HURT.

AND I DID.

I DECIDED, YOU'RE NOT

GOING TO HURT ME.

AND WE JUST MOVE FORWARD

WITH IT.

Reporter: IN HIS

TEENS, HE STARTED SMOKING

MARIJUANA AS A WAY TO FIT

IN.

I LEARNED TO START JUST

DOING WHAT EVERYONE ELSE

DID TO BE ACCEPTED, AND I

STARTED GETTING USED TO

BEING IN THE DRUG SCENE

MYSELF, AND DOING THINGS I

TOLD MYSELF I WOULD NEVER

DO BECAUSE I HATED IT.

I HATED ADDICTION.

Reporter: WHEN HE WAS

15, HE ATTENDED CHURCH AND

A BIBLE CAMP AND BECAME A

CHRISTIAN.

BUT AFTER A YEAR, HE MOVED

AGAIN AND HIS FAITH BECAME

A DISTANT MEMORY.

HIS DRUG USE INTENSIFIED

AS HE STARTED USING METH

AND L.S.D. WITH HIS NEW

FRIENDS.

I STARTED SELLING

METHAMPHETAMINES, AND I

STARTED GOING DOWN A WHOLE

OTHER ROAD THAT WAS

DESTINED FOR DESTRUCTION.

Reporter: AT 19, HE

WENT ON A VIOLENT CRIME

SCENE, STEALING GUNS AND

ROBBING CONVENIENCE

STORES.

HIS LIFE BEGAN TO RESEMBLE

THAT OF HIS PARENTS.

YOU GET IN A CAR THAT

NIGHT, NO ADRENALIN HIGH,

NO THAT WAS EXCITING, BUT

I HAD TO ACT THAT WAY.

BUT I WAS EXTREMELY

AFRAID.

I KNEW I WASN'T INTENDED

TO O LIV LIVE THAT WAY.

Reporter: CARL

COVERED HIS FEAR AND

EMOTIONS WITH METH.

DURING THAT TIME, HE

BEFRIENDED A GIRL THAT

WANTED TO KILL HER DRUG

DEALING BOYFRIEND.

CARL AND ANOTHER FRIEND

AGREED TO HELP.

WE DROVE DOWN TO A

SMALL TOWN, AND DURING

THAT DRIVE, SHE STARTED

SHARING THE FACT THAT HER

BOYFRIEND WAS NOT TREATING

HER RIGHT, AND TOLD HER

SHE WILL NEVER LEAVE HIM

ALIVE.

SO SHE STARTED ASKING IF

WE COULD HELP, WHAT WE

COULD DO TO INTERVENE.

WE SET THE TRAP THAT WE

DISCUSSED, A BROKEN DOWN

CAR AND HE WOULD HELP US

FIX THE CAR.

THE HOOD WAS UP, AND SHE

CAME IN WITH HER

BOYFRIEND.

SHE WAS IN THE CAR WITH

HIM.

AND SHE SHOT AND KILLED

HIM.

WHEN THAT GUNSHOT WENT

OFF, I WAS NO LONGER HIGH.

EVERYTHING CHANGED IN AN

INSTANT.

EVERYTHING COMPLETELY

CHANGED.

EVERYTHING ABOUT WHO I

WAS, EVERYTHING WHAT I

THOUGHT ABOUT LIFE --

EVERYTHING BECAME REAL.

LIFE IS REAL.

SO THAT WHOLE NIGHT WAS

SPENT TRYING TO COVER IT

UP, AND DRIVING HIS CAR

AND TRYING TO COVER UP

EVERYTHING AND GET RID OF

EVERYTHING, AND GET RID OF

ALL OF THE EVIDENCE.

TO MAKE SURE WE DIDN'T GET

CAUGHT.

I HELPED TRY TO GET RID OF

THE BODY.

AND WE DID.

AND THEN I TOLD THEM,

YOU'VE GOT TO TAKE ME

HOME.

THEY TOOK ME HOME.

I WENT HOME AND I GOT IN

THE SHOWER, AND I PRAYED

FOR THE FIRST TIME.

GOD, YOU'VE GOT TO DO

SOMETHING.

I TRIED TO CLEAN MYSELF.

I WAS IN THE SHOWER FOR AN

HOUR, 2:00 IN THE MORNING,

JUST SCRUBBING AND

SCRUBBING, AND I COULD NOT

GET MYSELF TO FEEL CLEAN.

I FELT SO DIRTY.

I FELT SO WRONG.

I FELT SO EVIL.

I LIVED IN CONSTANT FEAR,

IN JUST CONSTANT DREAD OF

WHAT'S GOING TO ACTUALLY

HAPPEN.

Reporter: EVENTUALLY

CARL CONFESSED TO HIS ROLE

IN THE SHOOTING.

HEE AND HIHE AND HIS FRIENDS WERE

ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH

FIRST-DEGREE MURDER.

LIFE WAS OVER AS I KNEW

IT.

SIGNING PAPERS THAT SAID

FIRSFIRST-DEGREE MURDER AND

REALIZING HOW SIGNIFICANT

THAT WAS, AND NOT KNOWING

WHAT TO DO.

Reporter: AS HE

WAITED IN JAIL FOR TRIAL,

HE SAW AN INMATE READING A

BIBLE, AND ASKED THE MAN

TO PRAY FOR HIM.

CARL PUT HIS LIFE IN THE

HANDS OF JESUS.

EVERYTHING ABOUT WHO I

WAS CHANGED.

AND I CAN'T EXPLAIN IT.

ALL I KNOW IS IT CHANGED.

IMMEDIATE DELIVERANCE

HAPPENED.

THERE WAS JUST A REAL

ENCOUNTER WITH GOD.

AND NOTHING EMOTIONAL

HAPPENED, NOTHING

PHYSICALLY CHANGED, BUT

THERE WAS A SPIRITUAL

THING WHEN I JUST DECIDED

I AM GOING TO READ THE

WORD OF GOD EVERY DAY FOR

THE REST OF MY LIFE.

Reporter: HE WROTE A

LETTER TO THE CHURCH HE

ATTENDED YEARS EARLIER

ASKING FOR PRAYER.

DANIELLE, A GIRL WHO

REMEMBERED HIM, WROTE

BACK.

HIS NAME WAS UP ON THE

BOARD FOR PRAYER.

AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT

THEY GOT A LETTER AND HE

WAS IN JAIL, AND HE WAS

FACING SOME CHARGES.

THAT WAS THE FIRST I HAD

HEARD HIS NAME IN ABOUT

TWO YEARS.

SHE WROTE ME BACK AND

SAID, HEY, I WANT YOU TO

KNOW WE GOT YOUR LETTER

AND YOU'RE ON OUR PRAYER

CHAIN, AND WE'RE PRAYING

FOR YOU EVERY THURSDAY,

AND JUST BELIEVE THAT GOD

CAN INTERVENE.

IT BROUGHT ME BACK TO A

PLACE WHERE I THOUGHT LIFE

WAS ACTUALLY GOOD DURING

THAT YEAR THAT I WAS AT

CHURCH.

PEOPLE ACTUALLY CARED.

Reporter: CARL PRAYED

AND STUDIED THE BIBLE FOR

HOURS EVERY DAY.

AND WITH GOD'S HELP, HE

FORGAVE HIS PARENTS FOR

THE YEARS OF TRAUMA HE

ENDURED.

HE ALSO EXCHANGED LETTERS

WITH DANIELLE ABOUT HIS

GROWING FAITH AND WHAT HE

WAS LEARNING FROM THE

BIBLE.

I LEARNED WHAT A FATHER

IS.

AND I LEARNED I HAVE A

DADDY I CAN RUN TO AND

THAT WILL LOVE ME NO

MATTER WHAT.

THE WORD OF GOD COMPLETELY

CHANGED WHO I AM AND

IDENTIFIED WHO I AM, AND

HOW MUCH HE CARES AND

LOVES.

AND THE FACT HE IS SO

WILLING TO GIVE SO MUCH

FOR SOMEONE WHO IS SO

WILLING TO GIVE SO LITTLE

JUST CHANGED EVERYTHING

ABOUT WHO I THOUGHT I WAS.

Reporter: THEN, AS

THE CHURCH PRAYED, HIS

CHARGES WERE REDUCED.

HE SPENT JUST UNDER FIVE

YEARS IN PRISON, HEALING

FROM YEARS OF HIDDEN PAIN

AND BAD CHOICES.

MY PRISON EXPERIENCE

WAS -- I WOULD NEVER

REPLACE IT.

I WOULD NEVER REPLACE IT.

YOU WANT OUT -- DON'T GET

ME WRONG -- BUT I HAD AN

EXTREME AMOUNT OF PEACE

AND REST IN THE LORD.

Reporter: CARL AND

DANIELLE MARRIED AFTER HIS

RELEASE FROM PRISON, AND

THEY HAVE A DAUGHTER,

MARIAH, AND THEY MINISTER

TOGETHER AT A DISCIPLESHIP

TRAINING PROGRAM AT THE

CHURCH WHERE THEY FIRST

MET.

HE SAYS HE IS THANKFUL GOD

HEARD HIS PRAYERS AND GAVE

HIM A SECOND CHANCE.

THE LORD IS THE LOVE OF

MY LIFE.

HE TOOK WHAT WAS BROKEN

AND MADE IT WHOLE.

AND I WON'T BELIEVE FOR A

MINUTE THAT GOD CAN'T

DELIVER THE WORST OF

PEOPLE.

HE NEVER ABANDONED ME.

HE NEVER TURNED HIS BACK

ON ME.

AND WHEN I ACCEPTED HIM, I

WAS HIS SON.

AND DI DESPITE THE FACT HEE

WASN'T PLACED WIT PLEASED WITH ME AND

DIDN'T AGREE WITH WHAT I

WAS DOING, HE WAS RIGHT

THERE IN S THAT SHOWER THAT

NIGHT TO HEAR THAT PRAYER,

AND TO START A PROCESS

THAT WOULD BRING

DELIVERANCE AND FREEDOM.

HE NEVER GIVES UP.

Gordon: AND HE WON'T

GIVE UP ON YOU.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT CARL'S

STORY, AND HERE HE HAS A

MOTHER WHO IS AN

ALCOHOLIC, AND SO THE

ISSUE IS, IS THERE GOING

TO BE FOOD TODAY?

THEN HE'S GOT A FATHER WHO

IS WORKING FOR ORGANIZED

CRIME AND IN THE DRUG

TRADE.

AND TALK ABOUT SOMEONE SET

UP FOR FAILURE.

CARL IS SET UP FOR

FAILURE.

HOW DID HE MAKE IT OUT?

HOW DO YOU CHANGE?

HOW DO THE CHANGE ALL OF

THAT?

YOU CAN'T GO BACK AND

CHANGE YOUR PARENTS.

YOU CAN NEVER DO THAT.

BUT HERE IS ONE THING YOU

CAN DO, AND THIS IS WHAT

CARL DID.

WHEN HIS SETUP LED HIM

DOWN THE ROAD TO WHERE HE

IS NOW INTO ADDICTION, HE

IS NOW INTO DRUGS, HE IS

NOW INTO CRIME, AND IT

GETS SO BAD THAT HE CAN'T

WASH OFF THE BLOOD THAT HE

IS RESPONSIBLE FOR, AND HE

CRIES OUT TO GOD, HERE IS

WHAT GOD WILL DO: HE WILL

COME AND BE YOUR FATHER.

AND HE IS ABLE TO CHANGE

THINGS.

HE IS EVEN ABLE TO PUT

THINGS RIGHT, THINGS THAT

YOU NEVER THOUGHT COULD

EVER BE MADE RIGHT.

HE CAN DO THAT.

HE CAN PUT YOU ON A PATH

WHERE YOU CAN WALK OUT OF

THAT.

THAT'S WHAT HE DID WITH

CARL.

NOT ONLY DID HE GET HIM

OUT OF PRISON -- THAT TOOK

TIME -- BUT HE FOUND HIM A

WONDERFUL WIFE.

HE NOW HAS A WONDERFUL

FAMILY.

HE NOW HAS A HOPE AND A

FUTURE.

IF YOU WANT THAT, ALL YOU

HAVE TO DO IS THE SAME

THING THAT CARL DID.

HE, IN A SHOWER, TRYING TO

WASH OFF BLOOD OF A CRIME,

CRIES OUT TO GOD.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS THE

SAME THING.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE

INVOLVED IN CRIME.

YOU JUST HAVE TO HAVE FROM

YOUR HEART, GOD, IF YOU'RE

THERE, IF YOU CAN HEAR ME,

COULD YOU ANSWER MY

PRAYER?

COULD YOU TAKE CARE OF

THIS PROBLEM?

IF YOU WANT HELP WITH THAT

PRAYER, WE'RE HERE FOR

YOU.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS CALL

US: 1-800-700-7000.

AND JUST SAY, I NEED TO

PRAY.

I NEED TO HAVE GOD IN MY

LIFE.

> HERE IS A WORD FOR YOU

FROM JOB: "FOR I KNOW

THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES,

AND HE SHALL STAND AT LAST

ON THE EARTH."

GOD BLESS YOU.

WE'LL SEE YOU AGAIN.
