A former lesbian feminist who fought for LGBTQ equality, Rosaria Butterfield shares how she was radically changed when she encountered the gospel of Jesus Christ through a friend’s ordinary hospitality. Read Transcript

THEY DIDN'T SEE ME AS A

PROJECT.

THEY ACTUALLY SAW ME AS A

NEIGHBOR.

Gordon: IT STARTED

WITH A FRIENDLY INVITATION

TO DINNER.

THEY DID NOT INVITE ME

TO CHURCH.

AND THAT WAS SO WONDERFUL.

Gordon: SEE HOW

ORDINARY HO HOSPITALITY HELPS

A LESBIAN PROFESSOR OPEN

HER HEART TO THE GOSPEL.

I CAME FACE TO FACE

BECAUSE I AM CONVINCED

THAT JESUS IS WHO HE SAYS

HE IS.

Gordon: WELL, WELCOME

TO THE SHOW.

YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF

COWBOY CHURCH OR THEATER

CHURCH OR DRIVE THROUGH

CHURCH, AND NOW YOU CAN

ADD CHURCH AT IN AND OUT

BURGER TO THE LIST.

[LAUGHTER]

> MARCUS ROGERS POSTED A

VIDEO TO HIS Facebook

ACCOUNT WITH THIS CAPTION:

"WE JUST HAD CHURCH AT IN

AND OUT."

Terry: ROGERS, AN

ARMY VETERAN, ADDED THE

WHOLE RESTAURANT JUST

BROKE OUT SINGING "

"RECKLESS LOVE."

AND EVERYBODY STARTED

PRAYING FOR PEOPLE.

WATCH THIS.

* THE OVERWHELMING,

NEVER-ENDING, RECKLESS

LOVE OF GOD *

[CHEERING]

WE'RE AT IN AND OUT.

* HE LEAVES THE 99

* I COULDN'T EARN IT, I

DON'T DESERVE IT *

* YOU GIVE YOURSELF AWAY

* OH, THE OVERWHELMING,

NEVER-ENDING, RECKLESS

LOVE OF GOD *

[CHEERING]

Gordon: WELL, THAT'S

SOMETHING ELSE.

I WILL SAY, AN IN AND OUT

BURGER WILL MAKE YOU SING.

Terry: ESPECIALLY THE

CHOCOLATE MALT.

Gordon: JULIA CHILES,

THE FAMOUS FRENCH, WHO

BROUGHT FRENCH COOKING TO

AMERICA, IN AND OUT BURGER

WAS ONE OF HER GUILTY

PLEASURES.

AND NOW WE HAVE CHURCH

THERE.

Terry: IN A

LAST-SECOND SURPRISE

APPEARANCE BEFORE A

PASTORS' CONFERENCE IN

WASHINGTON, D.C., VICE

PRESIDENT MIKE PENCE

STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF

THE EVANGELICAL COMMUNITY

AND IMPLORED THE MINISTERS

TO CONTINUE TO SHARE THE

GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST.

Gordon: HE TOLD

PASTORS, KEEP PREACHING

THE GOOD NEWS.

KEEP PREACHING IN SEASON

AND OUT OF SEASON, AS THE

BIBLE SAYS.

ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO GIVE

A REASON FOR THE HOPE THAT

YOU HAVE.

WATCH AS HE SHARES A

PERSONAL STORY ABOUT A

LIFE-CHANGING MOMENT HE

HAD IN COLLEGE.

NOW, I DID THE MATH,

AND IT WAS 40 YEARS AGO

THIS SPRING, IN 1 1978, THAT

I WAS AT A CHRISTIAN MUSIC

CONFERENCE IN WILMORE,

KENTUCKY.

I'D BEEN RAISED GOING TO

CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY

MORNING, A VERY FAITHFUL

FAMILY, BELIEVING PARENTS.

AND WHEN I WENT OFF TO

COLLEGE, I KIND OF SET ALL

THAT STUFF ASIDE.

BUT THERE WAS, THE END OF

MY FRESHMAN YEAR AT THIS

CHRISTIAN MUSIC

CONFERENCE.

AND I HEARD ONE CLEAR

PRESENTATION OF THE GOSPEL

AFTER ANOTHER.

AND WHEN THE RAIN GENTLY

FELL THAT SATURDAY NIGHT,

40 YEARS AGO THIS SPRING,

I LITERALLY WALKED DOWN

AND GAVE MY LIFE TO JESUS

CHRIST.

AND SO I JUST WANT YOU TO

CONTINUE TO --

[APPLAUSE]

-- SHARE THE GOSPEL,

SHARE THAT LIFE-CHANGING

MESSAGE.

Gordon: YEAH.

SHARE THE GOSPEL.

THAT'S WHAT WE'RE SUPPOSED

TO DO, IN THE MIDDLE OF

ALL OF THE POLITICAL

TURMOIL TODAY.

IT'S WONDERFUL TO HEAR

THAT.

> WELL, IF YOU NEED A

FEEL-GOOD STORY, HERE IS

ONE YOU'LL LOVE.

TWO BROTHERS, WHO CAME

FROM FOUR GENERATIONS OF

NAVY SAILORS, WERE

REUNITED IN THE MIDDLE OF

THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA.

DUE TO CONFLICTING DUTY

ASSIGNMENTS, THE BROTHERS

HAD NOT SEEN EACH OTHER

FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS.

Terry: WELL, THE NAVY

WENT TO GREAT LENGTHS TO

BRING AVIATION BOSON MATE

CASEY AND HIS BROTHER,

LUCAS HALTER, TOGETHER.

BY A TWIST OF FATE, THE

FIGHTING IN SYRIA BROUGHT

THE TWO BATTLESHIPS JUST

THREE MILES APART.

Gordon: CASEY WAS

ASKING HIS COMMANDERS IF

THERE WAS SOME WAY WE

COULD SEE HIS BROTHER.

ON MOTHER'S DAY, CASEY WAS

ORDERED TO SEE HIS

COMMANDING OFFICER.

HE WAS NERVOUS, BUT WHEN

HE WALKED IN, HIS BROTHER,

LUCAS, WAS SITTING ON THE

COUCH, JUST LAUGHING AT

HIM.

THE NAVY HAD FLOWN HIM TO

THE U.S.S. TRUMAN SO THE

BROTHERS COULD FINALLY SEE

EACH OTHER.

Terry: AFTER CATCHING

UP, THE BROTHERS KNEW WHAT

THEY HAD TO DO.

THEY CALLED THEIR MOM.

GOOD BOYS.

AND THEY WISHED HER A

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY.

AND SHE SAID -- AND I'M

SURE IT IS TRUE -- IT WAS

THE BEST GIFT.

YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU KNOW

YOU'RE KIDS ARE OUT THERE,

AND NOT ONLY ARE THEY NOT

WITH YOU, THEY'RE NOT WITH

EACH OTHER.

WHAT A SPECIAL WAY TO

CELEBRATE MOTHER'S DAY, TO

KNOW THAT GOD PROVIDED

THAT.

Gordon: LET'S

REMEMBER ALL OF OUR

SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN,

REALIZING THE SACRIFICE

THEY'RE GOING THROUGH FOR

US.

HOW OFTEN ARE THEY AWAY

FOR MOTHER'S DAY?

HOW OFTEN ARE THEY AWAY

FROM THEIR FAMILIES?

Terry: WELL, YOU

ALWAYS SAY, AND IT'S TRUE,

THE WHOLE FAMILY SERVES.

Gordon: WHEN ONE IS

FAMILY, THE ENTIRE FAMILY

IS SERVING.

Terry: THANK YOU FOR

YOUR SERVICE, GENTLEMEN.

> DANI AND DANNAH HAVE

BEEN FEATURED ON STEVE

HARVEY, THE "TODAY SHOW,"

AND "THE REAL."

Gordon: SOME OF THEIR

MOST POPULAR VIDEOS SOUND

LIKE MANY SERMONS.

ALMOST 9 MILLION PEOPLE

HAVE WATCHED THEIR VIDEO

ABOUT FAITH.

AND NOW YOU GET A CHANCE

TO, TOO.

FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE

OF THINGS HOPED FOR, THE

EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT

SEEN.

HEBREWS 11 AND 12.

THAT MEANS IF YOU CAN'T

SEE SOMETHING HAPPENING,

YOU TRUST THE PROCESS AND

YOU TRUST GOD.

NOW THAT'S FAITH.

FAITH IS EXTRA PRAYERS

THEY SAY I DON'T THINK I

CAN; I KNOW I CAN.

GIVE IT TO THEM, HONEY.

I KNOW I CAN.

> I KNOW I CAN.

I KNOW I CAN.

Terry: WOW!

[LAUGHTER]

Gordon: A HANDFUL.

Terry: NOT ONE, BUT

TWO.

Gordon: BURSTING WITH

AN ATTITUDE.

[LAUGHTER]

Terry: THAT'S

HILARIOUS.

THEY'VE GOT STYLE.

Gordon: THAT'S GOOD

ADVICE.

I'M GOING TO REMEMBER THAT

ONE.

I MAY HAVE TO GO FIND THAT

AND READ IT OUT MYSELF.

> WELL, THE UNEMPLOYMENT

RATE HAS DROPPED TO RECORD

LOWS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

IT IS NOT JUST RECORDS,

BUT 50-YEA 50-YEAR RECORD LEADS.

BUT FOR THOSE WHO ARE

DISABLED, IT MAY BE

HARDER.

Reporter: IT IS HARD

NOT TO SMILE WHEN YOU WALK

INTO THE HOWDY HOMEMADE

ICE CREAM SHOP IN DALLAS,

TEXAS.

HOWDY.

Reporter: YOU MAY

NOTICE SOMETHING UNIQUE IN

THE PLACE, BUT THEN THE

SAMPLES START COMING AND

YOU JUST GET CAUGHT UP IN

THE EXPERIENCE.

HOW ARE YOU?

I'M WELL.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

GOOD, THANK YOU VERY

MUCH.

Reporter: IN NORTH

TEXAS ALONG, THERE ARE

OVER 240,000 SPECIAL-NEEDS

ADULTS LOOKING FOR WORK.

HOHOWDY HOMEMADE ICE CREAM

SHOP IS THE FIRST BUSINESS

TO ONLY HIRE SPECIAL-NEEDS

WORKERS.

THERE IS NOTHING WARM

AND FUZZY ABOUT THIS.

WE'RE A FOR-PROFIT

BUSINESS.

AND OUR EMPLOYEES, AND THE

PEOPLE OUR EMPLOYEES

REPRESENT, ARE A HUGE

OPPORTUNITY FOR THE

RESTAURANT INDUSTRY AND

OTHER INDUSTRIES TO REALLY

START TO HIRE.

Reporter: TOM LANDIS

SEES SPECIAL-NEEDS

EMPLOYEES AS A SOLUTION TO

SOME OF THE BUSINESS

INDUSTRY'S BIGGEST

PROBLEMS.

EMPLOYEE TURNOVER AND

POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE, AND

THEY'RE BOTH SOLVED BY

PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.

THEY'RE FRIENDLY,

CONTINUOUSLY, OVER AND

OVER AGAIN, WHEN THE

AVERAGE EMPLOYEE JUST

ISN'T.

AT HOWDY, WE HAVE A ZERO

TURNOVER RATE.

OUR GUYS LOVE IT, AND THEY

WANT TO STAY AROUND.

Reporter: WHEN LANDIS

FIRST FELT THIS

INSPIRATION, HE WANTED TO

GIVE THESE WORKERS THE

BEST SHOT AT SUCCESS.

HE DIDN'T FEEL LIKE HIS

CHAIN OF FAMILY SHOPS

WOULD ACCOMPLISH THAT.

WE WANTED TO LOOK FOR A

SLOWER CADENCE, ONE WHAT

FRIENDLINESS WAS MORE

IMPORTANT THAN SPEED.

THE ICE CREAM SHOP GREW TO

THE TOP AND WITH KIND OF

FILTERED EVERYTHING ELSE

OUT.

ONE OF THE BIGGEST

FOOTBALL TEAMS HAS ITS

ANNUAL DINNER AT ONE OF MY

OTHER RESTAURANTS.

AND WE'RE BUSY, AND

COLEMAN WAS THERE AS A KEY

MANAGER, AND HE JUST KIND

OF STARTED PASSING OUT

FOOD AND HELPING.

AND THEY KIND OF JUST

NOTICED HIM.

HERE IS A KID, HE DIDN'T

NEED TO SERVE OTHERS, BUT

NOT ONLY OTHERS -- I FELT

LIKE AT THE END OF THAT

NIGHT, HE HAD MORE FRIENDS

IN THAT RESTAURANT THAN I

DID.

HE IS EXACTLY WHAT THE

RESTAURANT INDUSTRY NEEDS.

I LIKE TO HELP MAKE THE

ICE CREAM SOMETIMES.

BUT, PERSONALLY, I ALSO

LIKE TO BE FRIENDLY AND

SAY HI TO THE COSTUMERS.

OR EVEN SAY HOWDY TO THE

COSTUMERS.

Reporter: LANDIS

WANTS OTHERS TO NOT ONLY

APPRECIATE HIS BUSINESS

MODEL, BUT TO REPLICATE

IT.

I THINK IN FIVE YEARS,

SIX YEARS, YOU CAN WALK

INTO ANY McDONALD'S, ANY

FAST FOOD PLACE, AND

SOMEONE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

IS GOING TO BE WORKING

THERE.

AND THEY MIGHT REMEMBER

YOUR EXACT ORDER FROM THE

WEEK BEFORE, OR THEY MIGHT

GIVE YOU A HUG.

BUT IT WILL BE BETTER THAN

WHAT YOU'RE GETTING NOW.

Reporter: AND IT IS

NOT JUST THE RESTAURANT

INDUSTRY HE HOPES TO

CHANGE.

IT TAKES SOME

ADDITIONAL UPFRONT

PATIENCE, LOVE, BUT I

THINK -- I MEAN, GOD MADE

THOSE WITH DOWN SYNDROME

TO TRULY BE THE VERY BEST

IN THE HOSPITALITY SENSE

OF THE WORD.

AND THEN, ALSO, THOSE ON

THE AUTISM SPECTRUM --

THERE IS JUST AN

INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR

THOSE MINDS TO BE

HARNESSED.

I THINK IN THE RESTAURANT

INDUSTRY, BUT ALSO BEYOND.

Reporter: AS WORD

SPREADS, INTEREST GROWS.

LANDIS SAYS AT LEAST 50

PEOPLE WANT TO FRANCHISE

HOWDY HOMEMADE, WITH NEW

OFFERS COMING IN EACH DAY.

IT JUST SEEMS LIKE

THERE IS THIS BEAUTIFUL

ECONOMIC INTERSECTION

WHERE THE ECONOMY IS

STRONG, THERE IS A NEED

FOR BUSERS, PEOPLE TO WORK

BEHIND THE COUNTER, AND

THERE IS SUCH A -- A GUY

LIKE COLEMAN, MY CREWS --

TWO YEARS AGO, NO ONE WAS

GOING TO HIRE THEM, AND

NOW I'M WORRIED, HEY,

SOMEONE IS GOING TO POACH

THEM.

Reporter: EACH AND

EVERY EMPLOYEE NOT ONLY

EXCEEDS THEIR BOSS'

EXPECTATIONS, BUT THOSE OF

THEIR PARENTS, TEACHERS,

AND EVEN

Terry: JUST

RECOGNIZING THE GIFT THAT

COMES WITH PEOPLE WHO HAVE

DOWN SYNDROME, AND HOW TO

UTILIZE THAT IS SUCH A

WONDERFUL WAY TO TOUCH

LIVES.

IT'S GREAT.

A HEADS-UP, INDEED.

> COMING UP, AN LGBTQ

ACTIVIST STARTS SHARING

WEEKLY DINNERS WITH A

CHRISTIAN PASTOR AND HIS

WIFE.

THEY DIDN'T SEE ME AS A

PROJECT.

THEY ACTUALLY SAW ME AS A

NEIGHBOR.

Terry: HEAR HOW THEIR

ORDINARY HOSPITALITY

OPENED THE EYES OF HER

HEART.

THAT'S NEXT.

Terry: ROSARIA

BUTTERFIELD WAS A SYRACUSE

UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR AND

LESBIAN FEMINIST WHO

FOUGHT FOR LGBTQ EQUALITY.

TODAY SHE IS A BORN-AGAIN

CHRISTIAN AND A PASTOR'S

WIFE.

YOU MIGHT WONDER WHAT LED

TO HER CONVERSION.

IT ALL BEGAN WHEN A LOCAL

PASTOR AND HIS WIFE

INVITED HER OVER FOR

DINNER.

THEIR HOSPITALITY CHANGED

HER LIFE FOREVER.

WE LIVE AT THIS TIME.

WHERE SO MANY CHRISTIAN

IDEAS ARE UNDERSTAND AS

HEDAN.

AFTER THE DECISION

LEGALIZED GAY MARRIAGE,

THAT PUT THE GOSPEL ON A

COLLISION COURSE WITH THE

NEW LAWS OF THE LAND.

AND I THINK MANY

CHRISTIANS HAVE BEEN

STRUGGLING WITH,WELL, HOW

DO I SPEAK?

WHAT DO I DO?

HOW DO I MOVE FORWARD?

HOME IS A VITAL PLACE TO

INVITE YOUR NEIGHBORS IN,

TO HAVE SOME HEART-FELT

CONVERSATIONS.

WE CAN LOVE OUR CHILDREN

TOGETHER.

WE CAN LET SOME THINGS

SLIDE, EVEN THOUGH THE

WORLD WE LIVE IN WOULD SAY

WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE

ENEMIES.

TO ME, HOSPITALITY IS THE

GROUND ZERO OF THE

CHRISTIAN FAITH.

I WAS RAISED IN AN ITALIAN

FAMILY.

THERE WERE SOME ISSUES IN

MY HOUSE THAT MADE IT

ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE

PEOPLE IN.

SO HOSPITALITY DIDN'T

REALLY BECOME ENDEMIC TO

MY LIFE UNTIL I HAD SET UP

A HOME OF MY OWN.

I WAS A PROFESSOR AT

SYRACUSE.

I LIVED AS AN OUTED

LESBIAN FEMINIST IN NEW

YORK.

IN OUR LGBTQ COMMUNITY,

SOMEBODY'S HOME WAS OPEN

EVERY NIGHT OF THE WEEK.

THERE WAS NEVER A QUESTION

WHERE WILL I GO IF I NEED

HELP?

BECAUSE THE COMMUNITY

ITSELF IS ORGANIC AND

FLUID.

AND THAT IS HOW WE DEALT

WITH CRISES.

AFTER I WROTE MY TENURE

BOOK, I REALLY WANTED TO

WRITE A BOOK THAT WAS ON

MY HEART.

WHY IS THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT

SUCH A HATEFUL COMMUNITY,

AND WHY DO THEY HATE

PEOPLE LIKE ME.

I WAS ON A WAR AGAINST TWO

THINGS: PATRIARCHY AND

STUPID.

I WAS CURIOUS TO KNOW WHY

RELATIVELY DECENT PEOPLE

WOULD USE THE BIBLE IN

SUCH A HATEFUL WAY.

SO I WROTE AN EDITORIAL,

AND IT BROUGHT ALL KINDS

OF ATTENTION MY WAY, WHICH

I DIDN'T REALLY EXPECT.

BUT ONE OF THE THINGS IT

BROUGHT MY WAY WAS A

LETTER FROM KEN SMITH, THE

PASTOR OF THE SYRACUSE

REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN

CHURCH.

WHEN KEN AND HIS WIFE

INVITED ME TO DINNER, I

WAS HAPPY.

I THOUGHT OF KEN AS MY

UNPAID RESEARCH SYSTEM.

AND THEY WERE FINE WITH

THE FACT I WANTED TO READ

THE BIBLE TO CRITIQUE IT.

AND THAT BEGAN A JOURNEY

THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

BUT IT WASN'T RESEARCH

THAT CHANGED MY LIFE.

IN KEN'S HOME, THE WAY

THEY PRACTICE HOSPITALITY

BECAME A LIVING, BREATHING

EXAMPLE OF THE THEOLOGY

THEY WERE TEACHING.

AFTER MY FIRST DINNER AND

KEN'S HOUSE, KEN GAVE ME A

BUG HUG, AND FLORE GAVE ME

A BIG HUG AND KISS ON THE

CHEEK, AND WE SAID, WE'LL

CATCH UP NEXT WEEK.

CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN.

THEY DID NOT SHARE THE

GOSPEL WITH ME, AND THEY

DID NOT INVITE ME TO

CHURCH.

AND THAT WAS SO WONDERFUL.

BECAUSE WHAT IT SHOWED TO

ME WAS THAT THEY DIDN'T

SEE ME AS A PROJECT.

THEY ACTUALLY SAW ME AS A

NEIGHBOR.

NOW, I DIDN'T STEP FOOT IN

A CHURCH FOR TWO YEARS,

BUT EVERY WEEK I WAS IN

THEIR HOME.

AND EVERY WEEK IT WAS

CLEAR THAT PRETTY MUCH

ANYTHING COULD GO.

WE COULD ASK ANYTHING, AND

KEN AND FLORE WERE FINE.

AND THAT PROCESS OF

DIALOGUE AND TABLE

FELLOWSHIP WAS COMPELLING,

IT WAS DEEPLY COMPELLING.

I DID NOT COME TO BE SAVED

BECAUSE I STOPPED FEELING

LIKE A LESBIAN.

IT IS NOT THAT I GOT ALL

OF MY WORLD-VIEW ISSUES

COMPLETELY CEMENTED WITH A

HAPPY CHRISTIAN

EVANGELISM, NOT AT ALL.

I CAME TO FAITH BECAUSE I

BECAME CONVICTED THAT

JESUS IS WHO HE SAYS HE

IS.

EPHESIANS 4:29 IS OUR

WATCH WORD, THAT WE ARE TO

IMPART GRACE TO EVERYONE.

I MAY NOT AGREE WITH

EVERYTHING YOU HOLD TO BE

NEAR AND DEAR, BUT BECAUSE

WE ARE NEIGHBORS, I DON'T

HAVE TO SAY EVERYTHING

THAT IS ON MY HEART, AND

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SAY

EVERYTHING ON YOUR HEART.

AND OVER YEARS OF THIS,

THE GOSPEL TAKES ON A

MOMENTUM THAT IS

COMPELLING TO PEOPLE.

I THINK WE NEED TO GIVE

EACH OTHER THE REMINDER

THAT IT'S GOD WHO SAVES.

IT IS NOT ABOUT CERTAINLY

US BEING PERFECT, OR OUR

WORDS BEING PERFECT, BUT

SHOW UP WE MUST IN THE

ARRIVELIVES OF UNBELIEVERS.

WHAT COMES NATURALLY TO ME

AND WHAT COMES NATURALLY

TO YOU IS TO HANG OUT WITH

PEOPLE WHO ARE LIKE US.

PEOPLE WHO CAN MAYBE

FINISH OUR SENTENCES,

PEOPLE WHO DON'T SCARE US.

BUT HOSPITALITY,

BIBLICALLY SPEAKING, TAKES

STRANGERS AND MAKES THEM

NEIGHBORS, AND TAKES

NEIGHBORS AND MAKES THEM

THE FAMILY OF GOD.

IT IS A GREAT JOY TO SEE

THE GOSPEL BRING PEOPLE

TOGETHER WHO ARE SUPPOSED

TO BE ENEMIES.

AND IT IS A GREAT JOY TO

KNOW THAT GOD NEVER GETS

THE ADDRESS WRONG.

AND IF YOUR NEIGHBORS

AREN'T PEOPLE YOU KNOW

YET, THERE IS A BLESSING

WAITING FOR YOU.

Terry: THAT IS A

POWERFUL MESSAGE.

BECAUSE IT'S GOD'S WAY.

YOU KNOW WE'RE BUILT TO BE

RELATIONAL.

WE'RE BUILT TO LISTEN TO

EACH OTHER, TO SEE EACH

OTHER, TO KNOW EACH OTHER,

ALSO TO LOVE EACH OTHER,

TO TOUCH EACH OTHER.

YOU KNOW, NO ONE LIKES TO

BE SOMEBODY ELSE'S

PROJECT.

NOBODY LIKES TO FEEL LIKE

SOMEHOW THEY HAVE MADE A

DECISION THAT ALLOWS ME OR

YOU TO NOTCH OUR BELTS

WITH AN ACCOMPLISHMENT IN

THE RELATIONSHIP.

PEOPLE JUST WANT TO BE

LISTENED TO AND LOVED AND

VALUED.

AND I THINK OF THAT OLD

ADAGE, BUT IT IS SO TRUE,

PEOPLE DON'T CARE HOW MUCH

YOU KNOW UNTIL THEY KNOW

HOW MUCH YOU CARE.

AND I CAN'T THINK OF A

BETTER PLACE FOR THAT TO

START THAN OVER A CUP OF

TEA OR AT THE DINNER

TABLE.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT

GOD INTENDS FOR US TO

REACH OUT, TO TOUCH, TO

NOT BE AFRAID OF EACH

OTHER'S DIFFERENCES.

YOU KNOW, WE TALK ABOUT

THE TRUTH, THAT WHEN YOU

KNOW THE TRUTH, THE TRUTH

WILL SET YOU FREE.

WELL, THE TRUTH IS IN HIS

WORD.

THE TRUTH IS IN HIM.

AND YOU CAN'T JUST THROW

THAT AT SOMEONE AND HOPE

THAT IT STICKS.

I LOVE THE FACT THAT SHE

WENT INTO THE HOME OF THIS

PASTOR AND HIS WIFE FOR

WEEKS ON END, AND NOBODY

ASKED HER TO MAKE A

COMMITMENT TO JESUS.

NOBODY INVITED HER TO

CHURCH.

THEY JUST LOVED HER AND

ALLOWED HER TO BE WHO SHE

WAS, TO BE COMFORTABLE IN

THE MIDST OF THEM.

ISN'T THAT WHAT JESUS DID

WHEN HE MET THE WOMAN AT

THE WELL, WHEN HE STOOD UP

FOR THE WOMAN WHO WAS

BEING STONED, WHEN HE

INVITED AKIAS TO COME DOWN

FROM THE TREE, THE

UNACCEPTABLES, THOSE WHO

SIMPLY DIDN'T KNOW, AND

THEN HE JUST WELCOMED THEM

INTO HIS LIFE.

HIS HOSPITALITY SPOKE BY

HIS PRESENCE AND HIS

WILLINGNESS TO SEE THEM,

JUST SEE THEM.

YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE WAY

JESUS IS WITH US.

IT WOULD BE WONDERFUL IF

WE COULD BE THAT WAY WITH

EACH OTHER.

HOSPITALITY IS ONE OF THE

GIFTS MENTIONED IN THE

WORD OF GOD.

IT'S NOT JUST -- IT

DOESN'T JUST MEAN YOU SET

YOUR TABLE WELL, OR YOU'RE

A GOOD COOK.

IT MEANS THAT YOU HAVE A

GIFT FOR WELCOMING OTHERS.

WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK OUR

FRIENDS AT CROSSWAY FOR

ROSARIA BUTTERFIELD'S

STORY.

AND SHE HAS JUST COME OUT

WITH A BRAND NEW BOOK THAT

I GLADLY RECOMMEND CALLED

"THE BIBLE COMES WITH A

HOUSE KEY."

AND IT SHOWS HOW WE CAN

BRING THE GOSPEL TO OUR

LOST FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOR.

Gordon: WELL, STILL

AHEAD, A BOY IS

HEARTBROKEN WHEN HIS

PARENTS DIVORCE AND HIS

MOM LEAVES HOME FOR GOOD.

SEE WHAT MAKES HIS HURT GO

AWAY.

STAY WITH US.

Gordon: WELL, TODAY

MARCELLO IS THRIVING, BUT

NOT LONG AGO HIS HEART WAS

BROKEN AFTER HIS MOTHER

LEFT HOME.

WELL, THEN ONE DAY HE

WATCHED AN EPISODE OF

"SUPERBOOK," AND

MARCELLO'S DISPAIR TURNED

TO JOY.

Reporter: MARCELLO

WAS HEARTBROKEN WHEN HE

LEARNED HIS MOTHER WAS

LEAVING TO WORK IN ANOTHER

COUNTRY.

I TRIED TO COMFORT

MYSELF WITH THE FACT THAT

MY MOM WOULDN'T BE GONE

FOR LONG.

Reporter: BUT THEN

HIS MOTHER ANNOUNCED SHE

WAS DIVORCING HIS DAD AND

LEAVING FOR GOOD.

I FELT A GREAT PAIN IN

MY HEART.

I TRIED TO IGNORE IT, BUT

IT WAS SO HARD.

SOME DAYS I WONDERED, WHAT

IS MOM DOING NOW?

HAS SHE EATEN YET?

Through Translator: I

COULD SEE HOW HURT HE WAS

FROM THE BLANK STARE ON

HIS FACE.

HE WAS LIKE THAT ALL THE

TIME.

Reporter: MARCELLO

WENT TO CHURCH A FEW TIMES

WHEN HE WAS YOUNGER, BUT

NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE BIBLE

OR THE GOSPEL MESSAGE,

UNTIL HE WENT TO AN

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

FEATURING CBN'S

"SUPERBOOK."

THE FIRST "SUPERBOOK"

STORY I WATCHEDWAU WA WATCHED WAS "IN

THE BEGINNING."

I LEARNED I SINNED, JUST

LIKE ADAM.

I PRAYED AFTER THAT,

JESUS, PLEASE COME INTO MY

HEART AND FORGIVE ME FOR

THE SINS I'VE DONE.

Reporter: SOMETHING

ELSE HAPPENED FOR

MARCELLO.

AFTER HE PRAYED AND

WATCHED OTHER "SUPERBOOK"

EPISODES.

BEFORE, I ALWAYS MISSED

MY MOM, BUT AFTER I PRAYED

TO JESUS, I BECAME SO MUCH

BETTER.

JESUS TOOK THE SADNESS AND

GAVE ME JOY.

Reporter: MARCELLO

WAS ABLE TO TALK WITH HIS

MOM BY PHONE, EVEN THOUGH

SHE IS FAR AWAY, AND HE

LOVES TELLING BOTH OF HIS

PARENTS WHAT HE IS

LEARNING THROUGH

"SUPERBOOK."

I KEEP TELLING MY DAD

TO ALWAYS HAVE A JOYFUL

HEART.

THANK YOU, "SUPERBOOK."

Gordon: IT'S

WONDERFUL WHAT HAPPENS

WHEN CHILDREN SEE THESE

STORIES.

THEY JUST RESPOND TO IT.

THEY KNOW THE TRUTH OF THE

BIBLE.

AND THEIR HEARTS, THEIR

SPIRITS, THEIR SOULS LEAP

FOR JOY.

I HAVE FINALLY FOUND IT.

YOU CAN BE A PART OF

TAKING THESE WONDERFUL

BIBLE STORIES TO THE

CHILDREN OF THE WORLD.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS JOIN

THE "SUPERBOOK" D.V.D.

CLUB.

WE'LL SEND YOU THREE

COPIES OF OUR LATEST

EPISODE, "DAVID AND SAUL,"

FOR A GIFT OF $25 OR MORE.

CALL US: 1-800-700-7000.

> HERE IS A WORD FROM

ROMANS: "WHEN GOD'S

PEOPLE ARE IN NEED, BE

READY TO HELP THEM.

ALWAYS BE EAGER TO

PRACTICE HOSPITALITY."

GOD BLESS YOU.
