On CBN Newswatch, June 19: trade tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate with new threats coming from both sides; the Pentagon has suspended a major military drill planned for August with South Korea; The U.S. Food and Drug ... ... Read Transcript

Announcer: THIS IS

CBN "NEWSWATCH."

THANKS FOR JOINING US

FOR CBN "NEWSWATCH."

I'M CHARLENE AARON.

ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THERE

IS AN EXPLOSIVE OUTCRY

PARTICULAR PEOPLE OF FAITH

AND BOTH PARTIES AGAINST A

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PARTY

THAT ALLOWS PARENTS AND

CHILDREN TO BE SEPARATED

AT THE BORDER.

THE ADMINISTRATION SAYS

THAT CONGRESS NEEDS TO FIX

IT, AND AS HEATHER SELLS

REPORTS, LAWMAKERS ARE

DEBATING TWO BILLS THAT

COULD PROVIDE PARTIAL

SOLUTIONS.

Heather: WITH

OPPOSITION TO THE

SO-CALLED ZERO TOLERANCE

POLICY GROWING, THE

HOMELAND SECURITY

SECRETARY SAYS CONGRESS

NEEDS TO ACT.

CONGRESS AND THE COURTS

CREATED THIS PROBLEM, AND

CONGRESS ALONE CAN FIX IT.

Heather:

HEARTBREAKING PICTURES

SHOW CHILDREN IN U.S.

BORDER SHELTERS.

AUDIO RECORDING FROM THE

INVESTIGATIVE GROUP "PRO

PUBLICA" RECORDS CHILDREN

IT SAYS WERE JUST

SEPARATED FROM THEIR

PARENTS.

PAPA.

Heather: THE HOME

LAND SECURITY SECRETARY

DEFENDED THE

ADMINISTRATION IN A TENSE

WHITE HOUSE PRESS

CONFERENCE, NOTING THAT

THE U.S. HAS STRUGGLED

WITH A HUGE STRIKE IN

IMMIGRATION AT THE MEXICO

BORDER IN THEIR LAST THREE

MONTHS.

SHE ALSO SAYS MOST OF THE

12,000 CHILDREN IN THESE

FACILITIES WERE SENT TO

THE U.S. ALONE OR WITH

STRANGERS.

CHILDREN IN D.H.S. AND

H.H.S. CUSTODY ARE BEING

WELL-TAKEN CARE OF.

THE OFFICE OF REFUGEE

RESETTLEMENT PROVIDES

MEALS, MEDICAL CARE, AND

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES TO

THESE CHILDREN.

Heather: EVANGELICALS

HAVE BEEN SPEAKING OUT

AGAINST THE POLICY, BUT

WHEN ASKED ABOUT THEIR

DISCUSSIONS WITH THE

PRESIDENT, PRESS SECRETARY

SANDERS PIVOTED TO

CONGRESS.

I THINK ANY

EVANGELICAL, OR ANY CHURCH

FOR THAT MATTER, THAT

FEELS STRONGLY, THEY

SHOULD OPEN UP THEIR DOORS

AND HELP FACILITATE SOME

OF THESE INDIVIDUALS.

I THINK THAT'S THEIR

CALLING, THAT'S THE

MISSION OF THE CHURCH, AND

THEY SHOULD CERTAINLY

FULFILL THAT.

IF THEY WANT TO FIX IT

IMMIGRATION SYSTEM, THEY

SHOULD CALL THEIR MEMBERS

OF CONGRESS.

Heather: THE

PRESIDENT WILL MEET WITH

HOUSE REPUBLICANS TODAY TO

TALK BO TW ABOUT TWO IMMIGRATION

BILLS THAT COULD MAKE ASS A

DIFFERENCE.

President Trump: THE

UNITED STATES WILL NOT BE

A MIGRANT CAMP, AND IT

WILL NOT BE A

REFUGEE-HOLDING FACILITY.

IT WON'T BE.

Heather: EVANGELICALS

FROM FRANKLIN GRAHAM TO

THE SOUTHERN BAPTISTS HAVE

DENOUNCED THE FAMILY

SEPARATION POLICY, BUT SEE

LITTLE HOPE OF INFLUENCING

THE DEBATE.

MOST IN WASHINGTON BELIEVE

THE TWO IMMIGRATION BILLS

HAVE LITTLE CHANCE OF

PASSING.

IF WE GET THROUGH THE

END OF THIS WEEK, THEY

ACTUALLY DO HAVE THE VOTE

ON THOSE TWO BILLS AND

NEITHER ONE OF THEM GETS

THROUGH, THEN I THINK ANY

CHANCE FOR A VOTE ON

IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION

BEFORE THE MID-TERM

ELECTIONS IS BELIEVED

DEAD.

Heather: MOST BELIEVE

CONGRESS WILL NOT ACT

UNTIL AFTER THE MID-TERM

ELECTIONS.

BUT IF PUBLIC OUTRAGE

MEANS ANYTHING, CONGRESS

AND THE ADMINISTRATION

WILL FIND A WAY TO AVOID

SEPARATING KIDS AND

PARENTS.

Charlene: HERE IS A

LOOK AT SOME OF THE OTHER

MAJOR HEADLINES IN THE

NEWSROOM TODAY: TRADE

TENSIONS BETWEEN THE U.S.

AND CHINA CONTINUE TO

ESCALATE, WITH INTO

THREATS COMING FROM BOTH

SIDES.

PRESIDENT TRUMP

THREATENING A NEW 10%

TARIFF.

CHINA CALLING THE ACTION

BLACKMAIL, SAYING IF THE

U.S. PUTS MORE TARIFFS ON,

IT CAN EXPECT STRONG

COUNTER-MEASURES OF THE

SAME AMOUNT OF QUANTITY.

> THE PENTAGON HAS

PLANNED A MAJOR MILITARY

DRILL WITH SOUTH KOREA FOR

AUGUST.

IT FOLLOWED THE MEETING

WITH KIM JONG-UN LAST

WEEK.

SOUTH KOREA SAYING THAT

THE DECISION WAS NECESSARY

TO SUPPORT ONGOING TALKS

BOTH COUNTRIES HAVE WITH

NORTH KOREA.

TRUMP SAYING THEY'LL BE

DUMPING THE DRILLS UNLESS

AND UNTIL WE SEE THAT THE

FUTURE NEGOTIATION IS NOT

GOING ALONG LIKE IT

SHOULD.

> THE U.S. FOOD AND DRUG

ADMINISTRATION IS EXPECTED

TO SOON DECIDE WHETHER TO

APPROVE A PRESCRIPTION

DRUG MADE FROM THE

MARIJUANA PLANT.

THE MEDICINE WOULD TREAT

EPILEPSY CONDITIONS WHERE

THERE ARE LITTLE TO NO

APPROVED TREATMENT

OPTIONS.

THE BRITISH COMPANY BEHIND

THE DRUG SAY IT DOES NOT

CONTAIN THE PROPERTIES

THAT MAKE PEOPLE HIGH LIKE

MEDICAL MARIJUANA DOES.

> 120 WOMEN AND GIRLS

WHO SUFFERED SEXUAL ABUSE

AT THE HANDS OF FORMER

SPORTS DOCTOR LARRY NASSAR

ARE CALLING ON MICHIGAN

STATE UNIVERSITY TO FIRE

ITS INTERRIM PRESIDENT.

HE TOOK OVER AFTER THE

SCHOOL'S PREVIOUS

PRESIDENT RESIGNED AMID

FALLOUT FROM THE SCANDAL.

LAST WEEK REPORTS SURFACED

THAT HE SENT E-MAILS TO

ANOTHER UNIVERSITY

OFFICIAL CRITICAL OF

LAWYERS FOR NASSAR'S

VICTIMS.

AND HE SUGGESTED THAT THE

FIRST WOMAN TO GO PUBLIC

FROM HER ACCUSATION WAS

LIKELY GETTING A, QUOTE,

"KICKBACK" FROM HER

ATTORNEY.

THE LETTER ADDS THAT NONE

OF THE MINDSETS THAT

ALLOWED NASSAR TO ABUSE

CHILDREN FOR DECADES HAVE

CHANGED.

> A HEATWAVE IS MAKING

ITS WAY ACROSS THE

COUNTRY, RAISING CONCERNS

ABOUT AIR QUALITY IN THE

NORTHEAST, AND RESULTING

IN SEVERE WEATHER IN THE

MIDWEST.

CAITLIN BURKE HAS THIS

STORY.

Caitlin: IF YOU'VE

BEEN OUTSIDE OVER THE LAST

FEW DAYS, YOU KNOW IT HAS

BEEN HOT.

THE FIRST HEATWAVE OF 2018

SPANNING MUCH OF THE

COUNTRY, BREAKING RECORDS

AND RAISING ALARMS.

IN THIS KIND OF HEAT, AUTO

AND POWER PLANT EMISSIONS

CAN CAUSE PROBLEMS FOR THE

ELDERLY AND PEOPLE WITH

BREATHING CONDITIONS.

MONDAY TEMPERATURES

REACHED NEW HIGHS, AND IN

SOME PARTS OF THE

NORTHEAST, SCHOOLS

ACTUALLY CLOSED FOR THE

DAY.

STORMS IN PART OF THE

REGION IS BRINGING RELIEF

WITH MUCH COOLER

TEMPERATURES TODAY.

BUT THE CAROLINAS AND

VIRGINIA WILL STILL BE

BLISTERING.

BUT IN THE MIDWEST, RAIN

IS THE PROBLEM.

A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS

BEEN DECLARED IN WISCONSIN

AFTER A DAM FAILED.

HERE YOU CAN SEE THE WATER

POURING THROUGH THAT

BROKEN DAM.

DOWN RIVER, THE WATER

SPILLED OVER THIS BRIDGE,

CAUSING PART OF IT TO

COLLAPSE.

THAT BRIDGE WAS JUST

REPAIRED WEEKS AGO.

THEY JUST PATCHED THE

ROAD JUST LAST WEEK

BECAUSE IT WASHED OUT TWO

YEARS AGO FROM A BAD

STORM.

YOU KNOW, THEY JUST GOT IT

ALL REPAIRED AND NOW WE'RE

BACK TO SQUARE ONE AGAIN.

Caitlin: IN MICHIGAN,

FLOODING CAUSED MORE THAN

60 SINK HOLES AND IN

WYOMING, HAIL BLANKETED

HIGHWAYS.

FLOOD-WATCHES REMAIN IN

AFFECT, AND IT IS EXPECTED

TO CONTINUE THROUGH

THURSDAY.

ON THE PLUS SIDE, IT

APPEARS WHERE THERE IS

RAIN, THERE IS LESS HEAT.

NOT THE CASE HERE IN

VIRGINIA BEACH, WHERE

TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED

TO HIT 100 TODAY.

CAITLIN BURKE, CBN NEWS.

Charlene: POLY

PHARMACY, WHICH IS TAKING

LOTS OF DIFFERENT

MEDICINES AT THE SAME TIME

ROSE SHARPLY IN THE U.S.

IN THE LAST DECADE.

MEANWHILE, THE NUMBER OF

PEOPLE COMMITTING SUICIDE

HAS ALSO INCREASED.

LORIE JOHNSON HAS MORE

ABOUT MY RESEARCH THAT

SUGGESTS A LINK.

Lorie: OVER 200

MEDICATIONS LIST

DEPRESSION OR SUICIDAL

THOUGHTS AS POSSIBLE SIDE

EFFECTS.

NEARLY FOUR OUT OF 10

AMERICANS WHO TAKE AT

LEAST ONE OF THESE DRUGS

EXPERIENCE MORE DEPRESSION

THAN PEOPLE WHO DON'T TAKE

THEM.

DEPRESSION RISK INCREASES

WITH EVERY ADDITIONAL DRUG

TAKEN.

PSYCHIATRIST PETER BRAGAN,

AUTHOR OF "MEDICATION

MADNESS," SAYS THE STUDY

POINTS TO THE DARK SIDE OF

SO-CALLED WONDER DRUGS.

SOME DRUGS WILL DO IT

MORE THAN OTHERS.

CHANTIX, WHICH, FOR

EXAMPLE, IS USED FOR

STOPPING SMOKING, HAS A

VERY HIGH RATE OF VIOLENT

FEELINGS, SUICIDAL

FEELINGS.

LARIUM, AN ANTIBIOTIC, HAS

BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH

VIOLENCE.

ACCUTANE, WHICH IS A DRUG

USED FOR ACNE IS SO MUCH

ASSOCIATED WITH SUICIDAL

BEHAVIOR.

Lorie: BRAGAN SAYS

TOO MANY DOCTORS DON'T

TALK ABOUT POSSIBLE SIDE

EFFECTS OF THE DRUGS THEY

PRESCRIBE, AND TOO MANY

PATIENTS DON'T READ THE

WARNING LABELS.

ANY DRUG THAT IS

AFFECTING YOUR MIND, YOUR

MOOD, YOUR FEELINGS, HAS

THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE A

DISASTER.

MOST OF THE SCHOOL

SHOOTERS HAVE BEEN ON

PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS, AND A

GREAT NUMBER OF THEM WERE

ON PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS AT

THE TIME, OR SHORTLY

BEFORE, THEY COMMITTED

VIOLENCE.

VIOLENCE AND SUICIDE GO

TOGETHER.

ARE YOU GOING TO TURN YOUR

RAGE IN?

OR ARE YOU GOING TO TURN

YOUR RAGE INWARD?

Lorie: PATIENTS ARE

URGED TO TALK TO THEIR

DOCTOR ABOUT THE RISKS

VERSUS THE BENEFITS OF ALL

OF THE MEDICATIONS,

KEEPING IN MIND THAT

STOPPING, STARTING OR

CHANGING THE DOSE SHOULD

ONLY BE DONE UNDER A

DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION.

LORIE JOHNSON, CBN NEWS.

Charlene: COULD THE

U.S. SOON HAVE A BRANCH OF

THE MILITARY DEDICATED TO

POTENTIALLY FIGHTING IN

OUTER SPACE.

PRESIDENT TRUMP ON MONDAY

DIRECTED THE PENTAGON TO

CREATE A NEW SPACE FORCE

AS A SEPARATE BRANCH OF

THE U.S. MILITARY THAT

WOULD BE TASKED WITH

ENSURING AMERICA'S

DOMINANCE IN SPACE.

THE ORDER SEEMED TO CATCH

THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT BY

SURPRISE SINCE A NEW

BRANCH IN THE MILITARY

WOULD NEED CONGRESSIONAL

APPROVAL, BUT THEY'RE

ALREADY LAYING THE GROUND

WORK.

THE D.O.D. IS WORKING ON A

CONGRESSIONALLY MANDATED

STUDY OF THE POSSIBILITY

OF A SPACE FORCE WITH A

FINAL REPORT DUE IN

DECEMBER.

OTHER U.S. PRESIDENTS HAVE

ALSO RECOGNIZED THE

IMPORTANCE OF AMERICA

HAVING A PRESENCE IN

SPACE.

> COMING UP, IT IS A

CHURCH THAT SITS ON TWO

BORDERS OF TW TWO WARRING

COMMUNITIES.

HEAR HOW THIS BELFAST

CHURCH IS BRINGING TWO

COMMUNITIES TOGETHER.

Charlene: THEY WERE

KNOWN AS THE TROUBLED, THE

WAR BETWEEN CATHOLICS AND

PROTESTANTS ENDED IN

NORTHERN IRELAND 20 YEARS

AGO, BUT TRUE PEACE

REMAINS ELUSIVE.

DALE HURD REPORTS FROM

BELFAST.

Reporter: THERE IS

PEACE IN BELFAST,

OFFICIALLY.

BUT THIS WALL STILL

SEPARATES CATHOLICS AND

PROTESTANTS, AND THIS GATE

STILL CLOSES EVERY NIGHT.

"NEW LIFE CITY" CHURCH

SITS SQUARELY ON BELFAST'S

SO-CALLED PEACE BARRIER.

PART IN CATHOLIC BELFAST,

AND PART IN PROTESTANT

BELFAST.

IT WELCOMES THOSE WHO ONCE

MORTAL ENEMIES.

AMONG THOSE WHO COME TO

OUR CHURCH REGULARLY,

SUNDAY AFTER SUNDAY, ARE

THOSE THAT ARE FROM

TERRORIST BACKGROUNDS THAT

AT ONE TIME WOULD HAVE

WANTED TO KILL EACH OTHER.

I WOULD HAVE A KILLED SOME

OF THEM DURING A TIME.

Reporter: JACK

McGEE WAS A SOLDIER

DURING THE WAR, AND TODAY

PASTORS "NEW LIFE CHURCH."

I BELIEVE MANY

AMERICANS LOOKING ON WOULD

BELIEVE WE REACHED PEACE

IN THIS COUNTRY.

WE NEVER REALLY GOT THERE.

THERE IS A SEMBLANCE OF

PEACE, BUT PEACE DOESN'T

REALLY EXIST.

Reporter: PARTS OF

BELFAST ARE STILL RACKED

BY VIOLENCE, DRUG ABUSE,

AND BROKEN FAMILIES.

MEMBERS OF CATHOLIC AND

PARAMILITARY GROUPS HAVE

MORPHED INTO GANGS,

RUNNING DRUGS AND

PROTECTION RACKETS, AND

KILLING ANYONE WHO GETS IN

THEIR WAY.

THIS CHURCH IN AN OLD

WAREHOUSE SITS LIKE A

FORTRESS IN THE MIDDLE OF

IT ALL.

IT IS ONE THING TO PREACH

PEACE AND RECONCILIATION;

IT IS ANOTHER THING TO PUT

YOUR CHURCH ON THE BORDER

LINE BETWEEN FORCES THAT

WANT TO KILL EACH OTHER.

I DON'T THINK THERE IS

A BUILDING QUITE LIKE THIS

IN THE WORLD.

WHERE YOU'VE HAD TWO

OPPOSING COMMUNITIES, TWO

OPPOSING PEOPLE GROUPS,

THAT HAVE LITERALLY KILLED

EACH OTHER, AND BY THE

THOUSANDS.

Reporter: MOST

JOINING THE FIGHTING IS

TEENAGERS AND SPENT THE

PRIME OF THEIR LIVES IN

PRISON.

OSO MURDERED A MAN BEFORE

HE WAS 15.

I CAME ACROSS A GROUP

OF MEN THAT HAD TWO ROMAN

CATHOLICS AGAINST A WALL.

THEY ASKED ME, DO I HAVE A

GUN.

I SAID, NO, I DON'T HAVE A

GUN, BUT I CAN GET ONE.

AS THEY SAID THAT, ON ONE OF

THE CATHOLIC GUYS RAN

AWAY.

I SET MYSELF UP AS JUDGE

AND EXECUTIONNARY.

EXECUTIONERY.

Reporter: TODAY THEY

CARRY A CROSS DOWN THE

ROAD, IN WHAT WAS ONCE A

WAR ZONE, LIFTING THE HOPE

IN THIS DIVIDED COMMUNITY.

I COME FROM A REPUBLIC

IN WEST BELFAST.

AND TODAY, AS MY PERSONAL

TOKEN OF RECONCILIATION TO

THE COMMUNITY, TO RAISE

THAT CROSS.

AND TO CARRY THAT CROSS ON

THE SHACKLED ROAD WHERE I

USED TO BE A COMMANDER.

AND NOW TO BE A CHRISTIAN,

YOU'VE GOT REPUBLICANS WHO

HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN.

YOU'VE GOT PROTESTANTS WHO

HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN.

SO THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE

CROSS IS THAT THE CROSS IS

FOR EVERYTHING.

HERE IS A MAN WHO DIED ON

THE CROSS FOR THE SINS OF

EVERYONE, AND THAT IS A

GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO WALK

OR RUN THROUGH BOTH

COMMUNITIES.

AS FAR AS I'M

CONCERNED, A TERRORIST IS

A TERRORIST.

AND FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT TO

BREAK INTO THAT IS

SOMETHING THAT IS SUPER

NATURAL.

AND YET WE'VE SEEN IT

HAPPEN SO MANY TIMES, EVEN

HERE IN BELFAST.

Reporter: JACK

McGEE HAS BEEN

THREATENED WITH DEATH FOR

MORE THAN ONCE FOR TAKING

A LEADING ROLE IN TRYING

TO STOP THE VIOLENCE IN

BELFAST.

I KNOW I'M THE MOST

HATED PASTOR IN THIS

COMMUNITY, POSSIBLY IN

NORTHERN IRELAND.

I DON'T KNOW ANY OTHER

PASTOR THAT HAS BEEN

SENTENCED TO DEATH OR HAD

MORE THAN DEATH ATTEMPTS

ON HIM THAN I HAVE.

Reporter: HE HAS

WRITTEN A BOOK CALLED

"WHAT DOES IT TAKE?"

I'M SIMPLY ASKING, WHAT

DOES I IT TAKE TO MOVE

COMMUNITIES AGAINST

DIVISION.

Reporter: THEY HAVE A

SOCCER FIELD, A COFFEE

SHOP, AND PROGRAMS FOR

THOSE WHO NEED HELP.

THIS COMMUNITY NEEDED

ANOTHER CHURCH, BUT NOT

JUST ANOTHER CHURCH.

THERE ARE VERY OFTEN

THINGS THAT TAKE PLACE IN

THIS BUILDING THAT WE

NEVER ORCHESTRATED AND

THAT WE NEVER PLANNED, WE

NEVER PURPOSED, BUT IT

JUST HAPPENS.

I STAND BACK SOMETIMES AND

I SAY, THIS IS THE LORD'S

DOING, AND IT IS MARVELOUS

IN OUR EYES.

I GET AMUSED WHEN I SEE

PEOPLE COMING TO FAITH IN

JESUS, KNOWING THAT THEY

COME FROM A TERRORIST

BACKGROUND, AND THAT

THEY'RE ABLE TO COME AND

SIT IN THE SAME ROW FROM

THOSE WHO ARE ON THE

OPPOSITE SIDE AND WORSHIP

GOD ALONGSIDE THEM.

ONLY GOD COULD HAVE DONE

THAT.

Reporter: DALE HURD,

CBN NEWS, BELFAST.

Charlene: A POWERFUL,

POWERFUL STORY THERE.

STILL AHEAD, THE

LARGEST BANKRUPT CITY IN

U.S. HISTORY IS MAKING A

COMEBACK.

WE'LL SHOW YOU THE

REVITALIZATION OF DETROIT

AFTER THIS.

Charlene: FIVE YEARS

AGO, DETROIT OADE BIG

HEADLINES, BUT NOT IN A

GOOD WAY.

FINANCIAL PROBLEMS LED THE

MOTOR CITY TO DECLARE THE

LARGEST MUNICIPAL

BANKRUPTCY IN U.S.

HISTORY.

THANKFULLY FOR RESIDENTS,

IT DOESN'T END THERE.

AS MARK MARTIN SHOWS US,

THE CITY IS EXPERIENCING A

COME BANG.

ReporterCOMEBACK.

Reporter: THIS LARGE

HOUSING CONSTRUCTION SITE

MAY BE CONSIDERED AN EYE

SORE AND OTHER CITIES, BUT

IN DETROIT, IT IS

CONSIDERED REBIRTH.

ONE OF THE AREAS IS COMING

TO LIFE AGAIN.

THE CHAIR OF THIS AREA'S

DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION

SAYS 10 YEARS AGO, THE

AREA WAS FULL OF

DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS.

NOW A VICTORIAN MANSION

HERE CAN BE SOLD A FOR AS

MUCH AS $3 MILLION.

WE HAVE A NEW MAYOR.

WE HAVE A LOT OF

INVESTORS, WE HAVE A LOT

OF VACANT LAND THAT WASN'T

OVERLY PRICED, AND WE HAVE

A LOT OF EAGER PEOPLE

WANTING TO DEVELOP AND

BRING BACK SOME LIFE TO

DETROIT, AND IT HAS BEEN

EXCITING.

Reporter: WHILE SOME

VICTORIAN MANSIONS STILL

NEED WORK, SIGNS OF

PROGRESS ARE ALL AROUND.

CHECK OUT THIS BEAUTIFULLY

REMODELED HOME.

AND ALL OF THIS ACTIVITY

BRINGS IN MUCH-NEEDED

PEOPLE.

THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS

WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF

THE DETROIT TIGERS PARK

AND THE LIONS' FORD FIELD.

PEOPLE WHO WERE AFRAID

TO GO DOWNTOWN DETROIT

BEFORE NOW LIVE THERE.

IT IS GOING TO TAKE A

WHILE BEFORE IT IS FULLY

REVIVED, BUT RIGHT NOW YOU

GO DOWN AND YOU TRY TO BUY

A LOFT DOWN THERE, AND

YOU'RE GOING TO PAY TOP

DOLLAR.

Reporter: JOH JON ECKERLY

BELIEVES THAT DETROIT IS

DEFINITELY IN COMEBACK

MODE.

IT WAS SCARY.

I NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE

FILED SUITS.

I HAD WORKED WITH A LOT OF

BUILDERS, AND IT WAS A

CHAIN REACTION.

DETROIT FILED BANKRUPTCY,

AND THE NEXT THING YOU

KNOW, EVERYBODY STOPS

BUYING HOMES.

LIKE I SAID, A LOT OF

THEIR JOBS WERE LEAVING.

AND YOU HAD A LOT OF

PEOPLE THAT WERE MONEY

SCARED.

Reporter: WHAT LED TO

THE LARGEST MUNICIPAL

BANKRUPTCY IN U.S.

HISTORY?

FORMER MICHIGAN SPEAKER OF

THE HOUSE ANDY DILLON SAYS

A NUMBER OF FACTORS WERE

TO BLAME.

THE MAIN DRIVING FORCE

WOULD BE THE LOSS OF THE

MIDDLE MARKET

MANUFACTURING JOBS, AND

THE STRUGGLES OF THE K-12

SYSTEM.

YOUNG FAMILIES LIVING IN

DETROIT I BELIEVE DIDN'T

FEEL COMFORTABLE THEY

COULD GET THEIR KIDS IN

EDUCATION.

Reporter: DETROIT HAS

DEFINITELY SEEN HARD

TIMES.

IN FACT, THIS CITY, WHICH

WAS BUILT FOR NEARLY TWO

MILLION RESIDENTS NOW HAS

LESS THAN 700,000.

THE ECONOMY CRASHED,

AND THAT REALLY IMPACTED

THIS COMMUNITY, MORE SO

THAN ANY OTHER COMMUNITY

IN THE UNITED STATES

BECAUSE THE AUTO INDUSTRY

WAS SO TIED INTO WHAT WAS

HAPPENING.

Reporter: MICHAEL

O'CALLAHAN SEES DETROIT'S

BANKRUPTCY AS MORE OF A

BLESSING THAN A CURSE.

THE REALITY IS THAT THE

CITY WOULD NEVER HAVE

GOTTEN OUT FROM UNDERNEATH

THAT WITHOUT THE

BANKRUPTCY AND THE

REORGANIZATION.

SO FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE,

IT JUST DID AMAZING

THINGS.

AND GETTING THE CITY BACK

ON TRACK.

Reporter: IN 2014,

DETROIT EMERGED FROM

BANKRUPTCY.

AND AFTER THREE STRAIGHT

YEARS OF BALANCED BUDGETS,

THE STATE GAVE FINANCIAL

LEADERSHIP BACK TO THE

MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL.

O'CALLAHAN CREDITS

INVESTORS AND FOUNDATIONS

WITH HELPING LEAD THE

COMEBACK.

THESE FOLKS CAME IN,

AND IN MANY, MANY CASES,

THEY BUILDINGS THAT HAD

BEEN SHUTTERED FOR YEARS

AND YEARS AND YEARS AND

REINVESTED IN THEM.

IT ALLOWED THEM TO BRING

YOUNG PEOPLE INTO THE CITY

TO WORK AND CREATED

REMARKABLE CHANGE.

Reporter: AND HE

BELIEVES DIVINE

INTERVENTION HELPED

REVITALIZE MOTOWN.

WE HAVE TO ATTRIBUTE A

LOT OF THE COMEBACK TO

GOD.

A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE

PRAYING.

THERE WAS 24-HOUR

PRAYER IN THE BUILDING

WHERE WE NOW SIT, NOT ON

JUST CERTAIN DAYS, WAS

RELEASED FOR THE CITY TO

CONSIDER A WHOLE REVIVAL

MENTALITY.

IN OTHER WORDS, WE CAN BE

WHAT WE'VE NEVER BEEN.

WE CAN DO WHAT WE'VE NEVER

DONE.

Reporter: AND WHILE

THERE IS STILL A LOT OF

WORK AHEAD, DILLON

BELIEVES THE PEOPLE OF

THIS CITY CAN EVENTUALLY

COMPLETE THIS MIRACLE

TRANSFORMATION.

THERE IS A BIG PART OF

DETROIT THAT HAS TO SHARE

IN THEIR RECOVERY.

AND IT IS.

IT IS STARTING TO.

AND THE MAYOR IS REALLY

FOCUSED ON THE

NEIGHBORHOODS.

BUT IT IS SO BIG, YOU

CAN'T DO IT OVERNIGHT.

SO IT IS GOING TO BE A

PROCESS.

Reporter: MARK

MARTIN, CBN NEWS, DETROIT.

Charlene: GOT TO GIVE

GOD THE CREDIT FOR WHAT HE

IS DOING THERE IN DETROIT.

WE PRAY CONTINUED

BLESSINGS UPON MOTOR CITY.

> STAY WITH US.

WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.

Charlene: CBN

INTERNATIONAL IS WORKING

TO BRING MEDICAL RELIEF TO

THOSE FLEEING TERRORISM IN

THE MIDDLE EAST.

SYRIAN REFUGEES BEGAN

ENTERING JORDAN IN LARGE

NUMBERS THIS YEAR, A LOT

OF THEM IN NEED OF MEDICAL

ATTENTION.

CBN INTERNATIONAL HELPED

START A CLINIC IN THE

AREA, WHERE IT TREATS 350

PATIENTS A MONTH.

THEY ARE USING IT AS A WAY

TO MINISTER AND BLESS THE

JORDANIAN AND REFUGEE

COMMUNITY.
