♪ 10,000 reasons for my heart ♪

- Well, this evening marks thebeginning of Rosh Hashanah.

And so, I wanna wish everyonea very happy New Year.

This is the head of theyear on the Jewish calendar

and I like to tell peoplethe longer I'm a Christian,

the more Jewish I become.

(audience laughing)

You may wonder why...

(audience applauding)

You may wonder why a baptistcelebrates Rosh Hashanah

but we've been doing itat CBN since the 1960s.

My father started this wonderful tradition

of Christians recognizingthis is the unfinished feast.

All the other feasts morefulfilled during the lifetime

of Jesus, this one will befulfilled when he comes again

and we all look forward to that day.

(audience applauding)

Growing up we used tosay the trump will sound,

it's the shofar will soundand all the world will know.

So, this is also calledthe Feast of Trumpets,

the Feast of Shofar, and here's a look

at some of the traditionsbehind this wonderful festival.

(upbeat music)

- [Narrator] Rosh Hashanah,

the start of the Jewish New Year.

Ancient Rabbis called itthe birthday of the world.

Jewish tradition says it'sthe day that God created man.

The Bible calls it the Feastof Trumpets or Yom Teruah.

- If I went home to my Jewish family

and said hey, it's Yom Teruah, they wouldn't even know

what I'm talking about.

It's called today Rosh Hashanah

which means head of the year.

It somehow became the Jewish New Year.

Now, how did that happen?

- [Narrator] The Feast of Trumpets became

the Jewish New Year when the Israelites

were exiled in Babylon.

- In Babylon, thebeginning of the New Year

was in September.

They also had a lunar calendar, like the Jewish people,

so the first day of the seventh month

was the Babylonian New Year.

Over time, the Jewish peopletook the Babylonian New Year

and made it our New Year.

- [Narrator] And with the New Year

come the holiday traditions.

- You know, when you talkabout Jewish traditions,

you're always talking about food.

In fact, you can summarizealmost every Jewish holiday

in the fact that they triedto kill us, God rescued us,

let's eat.

- [Narrator] People eat pomegranates

and pray that their gooddeeds will be multiplied

like the seeds.

Round bread shows the cycle of the year

and apples dipped inhoney symbolize the desire

for a sweet new year.

(speaking foreign language)

- Another tradition incertain circles of Judaism

is to eat a fish head on Rosh Hashanah.

I know it sounds yummy, right?

But a fish head symbolizesthe head of the year,

the new year.

- [Narrator] The Hebrew greeting is

(speaking foreign language).

It's a shorter version ofthe traditional blessing.

May you be inscribed andsealed in the Book of Life

for a good new year.

- On the day of Rosh Hashanah,

according to Jewishtradition, God has books

and in these books, he decideswho has been naughty or nice

and who's going to have a good year

and who's going to have a bad year

and who's going to liveand who's going to die.

And so, when Jewish peoplecelebrate Rosh Hashanah,

they, as a blessing, say may you be inscribed

for a good year, may God bless you,

may this go in your favor.

- [Narrator] Rosh Hashanahbegins a 10 day period

known as the Days of Awe.

- The 10 Days of Awestart on Rosh Hashanah

and end on Yom Kippur andduring those 10 Days of Awe,

it is believed that you canchange your status before God

and so during those 10 Daysof Awe it is emphasized to

pray, tefilah, to give, which is called tzedakah,

to do good words, mitzvot, and to reprent, chuvah.

Now, the good news forus who believe in Yeshua,

the Messiah, is that ourstatus is the permanent

ink of the blood of Yeshua.

We don't go into the seasonwondering whether or not

if our name is going to stay in the book

or if it's gonna get in the book,

the day that we come to Yeshua, that we are born from above,

our name is put in theBook of Life forever.

- [Narrator] Many Jews observea ceremony called Tashlikh

which means casting off in Hebrew.

It's a symbolic way to cast off the sins

of the previous year.

- The book of Micah speaksof a time when God would cast

our sins, the sins of theJewish people, into the sea

and so, Jewish people, traditionally, on the first day

of Rosh Hashanah will take some bread

and they will go to a body of water

and they will throw thebread into the water

as a sign of God taking their sin

and casting it into the sea.

- [Narrator] The best known tradition

is the blowing of therams horn, the shofar.

(shofar blowing)

Twice the Bible talks about ashofar sounded by God himself.

The first time was on Mount Sinai

as the Israelites prepared toenter their covenant with God.

The second time will be atthe return of the Messiah.

- I believe that was God's original intent

when he gave this special time to Moses,

a time of blowing trumpets, blasting trumpets,

to look to the final trumpet

that'll be sounded whenYeshua appears in the sky.

- Cantor says this Jewish holiday

can also be a celebration for Christians.

- So, then the question is,how can Christians celebrate

along with Jewish people, Rosh Hashanah?

I think, first of all, theycan fast and they can pray

and they can, during these 10 Days of Awe,

can be a time of believingGod for revival within Israel,

within the Jewish world.

It can be a time of intersessionfor the Jewish people

to know their messiah.

I think, also, a great wayto celebrate this holiday

is to look to the coming of Yeshua.

I think it's a time forChristians and Messianic Jews

to look to heaven andsay come, Yeshua, come.

We long for your returning.

(ominous music)

- Let's open tonight with prayer.

Lord, God, we just join, the spirit and the bride

join together and we say(speaking foreign language),

even know, Lord Jesus, come.

Come and establish yourkingdom here on earth

so that your will would be doneon earth as it is in heaven.

And Lord, tonight we remember our friends

in North Carolina, in South Carolina,

as they're looking at amassive storm building up

in the Atlantic and we just ask tonight

that you would turn thatstorm and send it back

into the Atlantic harmlessly, let it do no harm,

for we ask it in Jesus' name.

Now, be here with us andwe stand on your word

that when two or more aregathered together in your name,

that you're here in our midst.

So, come and be here, letyour presence be manifest,

let your breath be on us,all around us, and in us

so that our song, ourdance, our every movement

would be inspired by you.

Lord, let us taste heaven tonight

and let us look forwardto your soon coming

for we ask it all in Jesus' name, amen.

And amen.

Well, that's not the onlyprayer we're going to have,

we're actually going to havean official Hebrew prayer

that has been done for centuriesand Professor Emeritus,

Dr. Joseph Kickasola's here.

He actually specializesin Biblical languages

and Biblical law, internationalaffairs in the Middle East,

so he's going to do it right.

I just do these extemporaneous prayers

and so we're gonna getthe full liturgy tonight

but before we get to all of that,

this is the Feast of Trumpets

and so we are going to usher it in

with a blast from the shofar

and then Doctor Kickasola's going to come

and lead us in a prayer.

Can we all stand for thisand stand for this prayer?

("Shofarist" by Don Heist)

(audience applauding)

- I have in my hand the(speaking foreign language).

In Hebrew that means thearrangement of prayers

for the whole year andthis Hebrew prayer book

in Hebrew and in English, notice I turn to it

in the front.

You say oh, that looks like the back.

In English the lettersare written and read

from left to right as you all know.

In Hebrew, they'rewritten from right to left

and therefore the book begins on the right

but Rosh Hashanah is in the fall,

it's the last season afterthe drought of summer,

the New Year begins, so I'mturning to the back of the book

which is the Hebrew prayer(speaking foreign language),

the sanctificationprayer for Rosh Hashanah,

the sanctification prayerfor the head of the year

for New Years day and thisprayer that I'm going to read

in Hebrew and then inEnglish, as the Bible says,

if one speaks in an unknown tongue,

he must then put it in avernacular which today, of course,

is in English and as I read this prayer,

this is the prayer that'sbeing read on this day

throughout the whole worldby the Jewish community

and by some Christian groupsthat care to participate

in the significance of this.

So, here is the prayer inHebrew and then in English.

(speaking foreign language)

Blessed art thou, O Lord ourGod, King of the universe,

who has chosen us fromall peoples and exulted us

above all tongues, and sanctifiedus by Thy commandments.

And thou hast given usin love, O Lord our God,

this day of Memorial, aday of blowing the shofar;

a holy convocation, as a memorial

of the departure from Egypt.

For Thou hast chosen usand has sanctified us

above all nations; and Thy word is truth

and endureth forever.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord,King over all the earth,

who sanctifiest, Israeland the Day of Memorial.

Blessed art Thou, O Lord ourGod, King of the universe,

who hast kept us in life, and hast preserved us,

and has enabled us to reach this season.

Amen.

The Rosh Hashanah Tovah.

(audience applauding)

- Welcome tonight.

It's such a delight for usto be back here with you

and our CBN family.

We're going to begin,or continue, pardon me,

with the words of Elijah, who stood before

the nation of Israel many years ago.

It was a time of greatconfusion because there were

many gods who were beingproclaimed from Jerusalem.

And Elijah stood before thepeople and he asked them a

question, he said, why do youwaver between two opinions?

If the Lord is God then worship him.

But if these other smallG gods are your God,

then worship them but it istime to make up your mind.

I believe it's so significant tonight

that we stand here assembled on this day,

in this year, at a timewhen I believe our nation

is making up their mindwho is God and so tonight,

as we worship, as we sing and declare,

as we dance and proclaimthe name that is above

every other name, canwe believe that the one

who inhabits our praisesreceives our adoration

and that these soundsgo beyond these walls

to break chains all overVirginia Beach and Norfolk

and this whole, beautiful title area?

And would even reach to Washington DC.

In a year when a decisionhas been made to believe God,

to agree with him, and tomove our embassy from Tel Aviv

back to Jerusalem, thecenter of the world.

(audience applauding)

(chuckling)

Not an insignificant thing.

Not an insignificant time.

And he has chosen us and hehas brought us to the kingdom

for such a time as this.

Now, you know whathappened in First Kings 18

and a challenge went outand Elijah said go ahead,

you build your altars, sing your songs,

dance your dances, fly your flags,

and then present your offeringbut put no fire to it.

I'll do the same and theone who answers by fire,

let him be God.

Mm.

It's time for the fire to fall

on the United States of America.

(audience applauding)

It's time for the fire.

And when the fire of Godfell on Elijah's offering,

the people fell on their faceand they said these words:

the Lord, he is God.

Let's agree with thatgood confession tonight.

Say it with me.

The Lord, he is God.

Come on, once more witha little bit more fire.

The Lord, he is God.

Hallelujah, come on, let's worship him.

(shofar blowing)

Hallelujah, give the Lord a give shout.

(shofar blowing)

Psalm 95, King David said,

come and let's sing for joy to the Lord.

We just finished singing itis good to praise the Lord.

And I'm reminded that asIsrael would go out to battle,

sometimes told to go outwithout swords or spears

or just because the captainof the hosts of the armies

of God wanted to showthat he is our protector,

he's our provider, and he doesn't need

our little sticks and stones.

By the way, in that last celebration,

I heard the Lord say that he's,

there were some kneereplacements being planned

and he's already takencare of the replacement.

(audience cheering)

But sometimes as Israel would go out,

they would send thesingers and the worshipers

ahead of the army andquite often they would say

these words, (speaking foreign language),

give thanks to the Lord for he's good

and his mercy endures forever.

His loving kindness endures forever.

He is good.

And he wants to show just how good he is.

Now, this one has a whole verse in Hebrew,

don't let it scare you butsee if you can pick it up.

It repeats several times and if you do,

you'll be able to escapeone remedial Hebrew class

in heaven, you'll be ableto come out and play with us

as we run around theuniverse instead of having

Thank you, Jesus.

Amen.

God bless you, be seated.

Paul was magnificent, brother, as always.

Give him a hand, Paul Wilbur.

Tremendous guy.

(audience applauding)

Appreciate it, brother.

What is today?

It is Rosh Hashanah.

What does that mean?

Rosh in Hebrew is head,Ha is the, shanah year,

it is the head of theyears, the Jewish New Year

and it begins the very important time

because why do we celebratethese things at CBN?

Isn't this a Jewish celebration?

Well, we're kind of Jewish ourselves.

(audience laughing and cheering)

Our Messiah is a Jewish guy named Jesus,

do you remember?

(audience cheering)

And we celebrate thistime because it speaks

of the last harvest of the Lord.

Now, 10 days from now, we'regonna have a celebration

that the Jews called the Yom Kippur

and what is Yom Kippur mean?

It's the day of covering and what is that?

You know, if you read the Bible,

it says that Jesus is our(speaking foreign language)

and that is a Greek word from the Hebrew

(speaking foreign language).

Now, you read the Bible andit says all kinds of things

about him and you don't know what it means

but a (speaking foreign language)

and a (speaking foreign language)

is a lid of coveringand what did Jesus do?

Well, it was in the temple of God,

there was a box that was a special box.

In it were the tables of the law

and they were speaking outagainst the people of Israel.

Day after day after day they spoke out,

you have committedadultery, you have lied,

you have born false witness,

you have stolen whatbelongs to somebody else,

you have not honored the Lord your God

and all these days inthis ark of the covenant,

the word was going out.

Now, on top of the ark of the covenant,

there were two angels thatwere the covering cherubs,

they were called cherubimand their wings came together

and formed a seat and thatwas called the mercy seat

and that was the placewhere, theoretically,

God was to sit in the temple of the Lord

and this testimony was comingup against them all the time.

You've committed adultery, you have lied,

you have disobedient to your parents,

you have not honored God

and it's saying it over and over again.

And on top of this was thisbox, the top of the box,

and over the mercy seat, thehigh priest would come in

once a year and he would take the blood

of a sacrificial lamband he would sprinkle it

on the mercy seat and when he did that,

this mercy seat would cover the testimony

of the law against thepeople and the Bible says

that Jesus, they call that the(speaking foreign language)

and they said Jesus is our(speaking foreign language).

He is our covering against sin,

against the testimonyof the law against us.

There isn't one of yousitting in this room

that hadn't done something wrong,

you've had evil thoughts, you've hated somebody,

you've been disobedient to your parents,

you've taken somethingthat didn't belong to you,

you've told lies, andI can go down the list

and I don't wanna shameanybody but we've all done it.

I'm not gonna say you,it's us, we've all done it.

Thank God there is a mercy seat.

Thank God for the blood of Jesus.

(audience applauding)

Thank God.

Now, every year, the highpriest had to come into that

and sprinkle that blood.

Every year.

And if he failed to doit, if he failed to do it,

then there was no sacrifice

and every year he hadto sprinkle his blood

over the (speaking foreign language),

over the mercy seat, whichstilled the testimony

of the law against them.

But you know what the Bible says?

Jesus doesn't have to doit over and over again.

He died once.

Once!

(audience applauding)

And his blood atones forever and ever.

That's why we celebrate this time together

because he is our mercy seat.

(audience applauding)

He is our lid of covering.

Jesus Christ.

And we're here to praisehim and this Rosh Hashanah

we begin this year and thenfive days after, Yom Kippur,

came something else, therewas the final harvest

and that was calledSukkot, the time of booths

or tabernacles, the Feast of Tabernacles.

I've been over to Israeland it's a wonderful time.

You sit out in the courtyardand they have a booth

over the place where you'reseated and they took branches

of trees and they put themtogether and they made booths.

What was this?

This was a transition point.

This was the time when theywent from the former year

to the New Year and afterthey had had Yom Kippur,

five days later they hadthe Feast of Tabernacles

which celebrated theingathering of the final harvest

and it is so wonderful, that'sone of the reasons we're here

because I tell you tonight,we are coming to the final

harvest when Jesus Christis going to come back again.

(audience applauding)

And as Paul was singing behold he comes

riding on a cloud, he's going to come

and didn't he say that?

You'll behold the son of man,

sitting at the right hand of glory,

coming on the clouds of the glory

and he's going to come back again

and the heavens will receive him

until he comes back again

and isn't that what Peter, the angels said to Peter,

said this same Jesus thatyou see ascend to heaven

will come back even as he went into heaven

and you and I, our hearts yearnfor the coming of the Lord,

we yearn to see his coming

and all this world that we live in,

I know it's all we spend time with,

money and stock markets andjobs and votes and politics

and all the mess that you seeon CNN and everything else,

you know?

(audience laughing)

And you say oh my goodness,is that what's important?

Well, what's important is thatJesus is coming back again,

that's what's important.

(audience applauding)

And the Bible says hewill send out his angels

and he will gather hiselect from the four corners

of the earth and they willrise up to meet him in the air

and he will come and establishhis kingdom forever and ever

and ever, world without end, amen.

He's coming again.

And that's why we celebrate this time.

We celebrate him as our lid of covering,

as our returning sacrifice,

as the one who covers their sins,

as the one who is giving us life,

as the one who's with us constantly,

who's never going toleave us or forsake us

and we can take him by thehand and he'll carry us through

whatever goes on in lifeand, you know, I've just

was with a friend ofmine and just had dinner

a couple nights ago andI said tell me about

your daughter who hadcancer and they said,

they looked at me and they said she died,

passed away last week of cancer

and I was looking at a picture I've got

in my kitchen and the picture is of

the valley outside ofthe mountain in Allegheny

and it was done by aman who, Tom McLaughlin,

who was our head of our art department.

Tom just passed away with cancer.

We've had so many people die,

people who'd gone awaybut you know something?

They're all going to rise again,

they're going to come out of the earth.

(audience applauding)

And the Bible says thosewho die will not precede

those of us who are living, they will rise

and then we will be called uptogether with them in the air

and the Apostle Paul saidwherefore comfort one another

with these words: we don'tgrieve as those who have no hope

but my hope is in Jesus Christ.

He rose from the dead and because he rose,

he lives and we will livealso and so we celebrate

his coming, we celebrate hisdeath, we celebrate his birth,

we celebrate Passover, wecelebrate all the feasts

of the Lord and we celebratethe great harvest that's coming

and you and I are part ofit and I'm pleased to report

that those of you, you'rehere at CBN, you know,

it's kind of amazing whenI hear the statistics

but we are having over 100 million people

want into the kingdom ofGod every year, 100 million!

(audience applauding)

100 million!

And if he comes back,I want to look at him

and say Lord, here are theservants that you gave us

and here are the ones thatyou've entrusted to our care

and we're so grateful thatyou let us have a part

in your kingdom, so I praise God tonight

on this Rosh Hashanah, let's give God the praise

and the glory for all his goodness.
