- Venezuela's economic meltdownhas taken a terrible toll

on the nation's health services

and in Venezuelan hospitals,

the situation is especially heartbreaking.

At San Cristobal in Tachirastate only emergency cases

are being admitted.

People have to buy their own medicines,

bandages, and gloves.

Some patients are forcedto wait in stairwells

for treatment that is not common.

This patient, Gloria, needsa metal pin for her leg,

but she may wait up to three months.

Because of a shortageof nurses, many patients

in the hospital are beingcared for by their relatives.

Many of the medical personnelhave left the hospital

because they were unable tosurvive on the minimum wage

they were getting.

Those who are left areworking for almost nothing.

- Everything here is so sad.

I cannot help thembecause if they need help,

there is nobody here.

- [Dale] The hospital isalmost bankrupt by the

worsening economic situation in Venezuela.

Parts have had to be boardedup due to lack of supplies.

This seven-year-oldpatient has a brain tumor.

There is no cancer treatmentavailable in the country.

She is cared for by her mother who says,

"Because she's my daughter,I have to support her

"and do everything I can to help her.

"We've been here for two months."

This boy needs antibioticsfor a serious bowel problem,

but they simply aren't available.

His father describes thesituation as a nightmare.
