Killing Off What Was Killing Tam

LAOS - As a widow, Tha has come to depend on her 13-year-old son, Tam.
“He’s been a big help at home, especially since my husband died,” she says.
When they’re not harvesting bamboo to sell, Tam and his mom gather frogs to eat for dinner. But, then one day recently, Tam got very sick and nearly died.
“He had severe stomach pain and a fever that would not go down,” Tha said. “He wouldn’t eat; and when he did, he would throw up. He kept getting weaker.”
At the time, CBN was visiting Tam’s village to provide free medical care for the community. Immediately, we tested the boy and found he’d contracted a liver fluke - a parasite that was slowly killing him.
A CBN staff member gave him a strong anti-parasite medicine and in a few days he was feeling great!
Because liver flukes are common in villages like Tam’s in Laos, CBN is also teaching the community how to keep from getting them in the future.
Finally, CBN dug a well so the entire village will have fresh water to drink.
“Thank you so much CBN for saving my son’s life,” Tha said.
