CBN.com – Matthew Monday lived in an African village where he worked as a baker. When his family suffered with economic problems, his income from the bakery wasn’t enough. So he started selling fake prescription drugs.
“I thought, if I can do that, then I can get money to feed myself, my parents, and my brothers and sisters,” Matthew says.
Instead, Matthew was arrested and sent to prison for 12 years.
“I was beaten up and locked in a cell. That made me very unhappy. So I started thinking about my life and what I had become,” he says.
One day, a team of CBN evangelists came to the prison. They shared the Gospel and showed the prisoners CBN videos, such as The 700 Club.
“While Pat Robertson was talking, I decided to give Jesus a try,” Matthew says. “I repeated the prayer with him.”
“While I was still praying, the head of security came and told me to come with him, that I was being released from prison that day,” he says. It was an amazing turn of events. After serving only one year of his sentence, Matthew was being released. It was a custom in his state in Nigeria to release two prisoners each year on a particular holiday. Matthew was one of those prisoners.
When he got home, he told everyone about prayer to receive Jesus and of his release. More than 20 people gave their lives to the Lord as a result of Matthew’s testimony.
Today, Matthew has a job and shares the Gospel with everyone he meets. It all began with a video he saw in prison and a prayer he prayed with a man on television.
“I am very, very happy with the CBN program,” Matthew says with a bright smile. “It is God’s ordained program to set people free. It is my prayer that God will continue to strengthen CBN.”
