Run Over By a Train: Yadhamma's Story
CBN Operation Blessing India
CBN.com The bright smile on Yadhamma’s face does not tell the story of the trauma she’s experienced. Three years ago, she was traveling by train to her native village in India. During a police chase on the train, an unticketed passenger who was trying to escape, pushed Yadhamma off the train while running past her. She lost her left hand and leg from the accident and was hospitalized for 45 days. The pain and hardship the family went through was unimaginable.
Before suffering this horrible injustice, Yadhamma had helped bring income into the family by selling vegetables door to door in their village, Shad Nagar, AP. After losing two limbs, she wasn’t able to work – not outside the home or even to do housework in her home. She had to depend on someone else just to move around.
Surviving only on her husband, Jangaiah’s earnings, was very difficult for the family. They have five children and he works as a hawker, earning 100 Rs (Indian Rupee) a day, a little over $2 a day. Yadhamma’s loss of income placed the family in economic peril. However, she faced this hardship with bravery and determination. She desperately wanted to be self-reliant and provide for her family even though there was little she could do to change her situation.
When there seemed to be no solution and hope began to fade, Yadhamma heard about Operation Blessing India’s medical camp in Shad Nagar, roughly 10 miles away. She heard they gave people wheelchairs and knew that this would be the help she had longed for. When she reached the medical camp, the caregivers couldn’t help but note her positive attitude and pleasant disposition. It was a blessing to her to receive a wheelchair and a blessing to the workers to have her example of strength and hope in the face of such difficulty. She inspired others to overcome any challenge life would bring.
Her countenance bears witness to the gratefulness she has towards CBN and OB, but more so for God and His mercy upon her life.
With the help of the wheelchair, Yadhamma is now able to move about and sell vegetables again. Her husband and son bring her the vegetables and she contributes to her family’s income again. The wheelchair is indeed a blessing to her life. She delightfully exclaims, “I am very happy for this opportunity to work again and support my family. Thank You so much.”
