CBN.com CAMBODIA – In the rural village of Bror Gnel, Vay can be found helping with a construction job or working in the rice fields. His daughter, Lakhena, stays at home like most of the children in their village. She usually stands or sits alone, watching the other children play.
Pastor Houl was visiting their village during an outreach from CBN’s regional offices. He noticed the young girl, who looked different than the others. She was quiet, unhappy, and watching the other children play a game in front of a house. Lakhena was born with a severe cleft lip and often experienced social isolation from other children because of her appearance. Although she was still young, she had already developed shyness because of her condition.
“I feel sad for my daughter. I do extra work in the rice field and construction work in the village. But, the last four years, I save nothing,” her father said. He desperately wanted to be able to provide the surgery she needed. He knew it would change her life for the better, but they could not afford it. If working harder or more hours could have been the solution, Lakhena would have undergone surgery years ago.
Pastor Houl’s heart was moved to put things in motion for this little girl to get the surgery she needed. He helped the family get the information about a free cleft lip surgery medical ministry through CBN. Vay’s despair for his daughter was turned to hope when the arrangements were made for the procedure. A local church even provided the taxi to get Vay and Lakhena to CBN’s office in Phnom Penh for her medical miracle. After a successful surgery, Lakhena has a beautiful new smile and her parents are smiling more too.
“I would like to thank CBN and the kind donors who provided this help from a far distance,” Vay said. “I am very happy too - my daughter looks as beautiful as the other girls. I have a great confidence; when she got back home, she is not ashamed with her friends in our village from now to the future. Thank you CBN!”
