Diep Versus the Typhoon

CBN.comVIETNAM - Diep reached into the classroom supply closet and pulled out his bedding. He listened to the rain hit the metal roof of the vocational school as he fell asleep. His home was too far from Danang to travel back and forth each day, so Diep only went home on weekends.

Before daylight arrived, Diep awoke to the roaring sound of heavy wind and rain. Typhoon Parma was thundering through the coastal provinces with fury. He worried that the buildings might not withstand the threatening forces.

This vocational school was giving hope to so many young people of neighboring villages. They were learning skills to provide for themselves in the future. Some were learning sewing, gardening, computers, and various crafts. Diep and his co-workers invested most of their time and effort into growing this school by offering new classes and finding sponsors to fund on-going and future projects.

Diep’s fears became reality as the morning light brought with it typhoon strength winds. The mighty forces began to rip the metal roof off of one of the buildings. He ran to the structure and moved furniture, computers, and whatever he could maneuver into another school building. As he worked, he heard tearing sounds as sheets of the roof came off one by one.

Diep emptied the entire building that contained craftwork, offices for teachers, a sewing class, and a gardening class. He tried to save four garden projects; one used a special seed they had received from Canada. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to save the seed. Many of the school’s important documents were drenched with rainwater. The roof was entirely gone on one building and others suffered rain and wind damage.

When his co-workers came back to the school, they were overwhelmed by the destruction their little school had suffered. They surely didn’t have the money to pay to replace the roof and other damages. They feared the school would have to close.

Diep brought their concerns to a local ministry that had ties with CBN’s Operation Blessing and they agreed to partner with them to help repair the vocational school. When he brought this news to the teachers and staff, they were filled with joy. In three weeks, a roof was put on the building, and the desks and projects were moved back into the classrooms. The school had been restored!

When you partner with CBN, you are part of real solutions for a variety of problems all over the world. Operation Blessing joined with the local ministry and provided what is spoken of in scripture – that God gives us “festive praise instead of despair” (Isaiah 61:3, NLT).
