CBN.com INDONESIA - Lush green hills and a cool mountain climate provide a breathtaking paradise when taking in the natural beauty of the southern Indonesian island of Flores. The island inhabitants are primarily farmers who produce coffee, rice, and corn. CBN’s Operation Blessing landed on this island in March, 2007, bringing disaster relief to thousands who had lost loved ones and homes from devastating landslides.
These response teams were eventually led on foot through hills of coffee tree groves and across a river to the remote village of Koko. Rarely do our teams come upon a village so untouched by the modern world. The daily lives of the people of Koko focused on farming and survival. They had no water or sewer systems. Their small brown bodies displayed the lack of nutrition and clean water common to their lifestyles. Many suffered from illnesses born from their environment. It seemed that the only modern influences that had made their way into the village were alcohol and cigarettes. Fighting among the adults was routinely witnessed. Our relief workers were moved with passion to make everyday life better for the Koko villagers.
During the past two years, Operation Blessing brought clean water, a health, exercise and training center, and a medical team to Koko village. A full time medical doctor ministers to the needs of the 700 people of Koko and hundreds others in 28 surrounding towns and villages from the health center. The people now enjoy all the benefits of clean water for bathing, cooking, cleaning, and survival. Operation Blessing also trained them to make tempe (a fermented soybean cake), organic fertilizer, and a garden for the people to learn growing horticultural plants.
The help and hope that Operation Blessing brought to this little remote village has changed their lives for the better. They have improved health and expanded use of their farmland to include a variety of plants and crops that are good for their economy. A notable decrease in the problems with alcohol and violence are attributed to the good news and love demonstrated to the people of Koko.
