India: A Reason to Live
- Medical Examination
- Krishnaveni with Her Mother
CBN.com INDIA – Krishnaveni wanted to die. She felt alone, unloved and useless. She was 65-years-old and had been sick for months. Her mother, children, and grandchildren lived nearby but none of them had been able to help her. Her legs were swollen and she was terribly weak from malnourishment. Her eyes reflected the depression and despair that filled her soul. Often she had cried out, “There is no one to take care of me. Why do I need to live in this world?”
CBN’s Operation Blessing brought a medical camp to her village at the time Krishnaveni needed help the most. She could not walk by the time she arrived and waited an hour for her 85-year-old mother to bring her a walking stick. When the doctor examined her, he found she was very anemic and had a severe urinary tract infection. He gave her antibiotics, vitamins, iron capsules, and iron syrup. He also gave her sincere concern for her well being, a rare blessing for this woman.
Over 750 patients were treated at the medical camp organized by Operation Blessing and local CSI Kalyani Hospital. They were from poor farming villages up to 25 miles away from the nearest doctor. Most of these people accept suffering and untreated illness as part of life because of where they live and their legacy of poverty.
Free medical camps have a way of reaching out to not just the physically hurting but also the emotionally scarred. When patients come with problems, each one has a story to tell. Either it’s about how their circumstances have isolated them from a “normal” life or about how people who they live with are so distant from them emotionally that their cries for help don’t seem to reach them at all. For some its mere helplessness that comes from the battle between caring for their loved one and feeding their other loved ones.
When a free medical clinic comes to serve them and treat their sicknesses, their lives are dramatically changed. They experience compassion from strangers and it softens their hearts.
