CBN.com BHUTAN - Steep mountain slopes of the Eastern Himalayas provide a picturesque scene on the horizon for 12-year-old Pema and her parents, Ringmi and Chetri. They are citizens of Bhutan, a country sandwiched between China and India and literally surrounded by mountains. Poverty is no stranger to this family and many who live in this difficult terrain. Their village, Chengmari, sits over 12 miles from the nearest hospital and no medical facilities exist for routine care. When Pema developed a painful eye infection, the family could not afford to bring her anywhere for help.
Ringmi and Chetri work long hours in the tea gardens of nearby farmers to earn enough money to survive. Their wages barely provide a roof over their heads and food on their table. Seven days passed; each day their hearts ached as they watched their only child’s condition worsen. Pema’s dark brown eyes were hardly visible as the redness and swelling increased on her petite and narrow face. By the end of the week, she could barely read anymore.
All of their despair turned to hope when they found out that CBN’s Operation Blessing medical team was visiting Chenjmari and providing free medical care. One of the doctors examined Pema’s eyes and gave her antibiotics, eyes drops and vitamin supplements. She was on a quick path to recovery and plans to study to become a doctor and help the people of Bhutan.
Operation Blessing’s medical team treated over 350 people during their stay in Chenjmari village. Infants, children, and adults were provided with free treatment and medicines for various sicknesses. Health and hygiene instructions were also given by the medical team for healthy eating habits, exercise and prevention of diseases.
The little ones also had fun at the children’s corner, an area set up for story telling, drawing, and coloring. In spite of her infected eyes, Pema enjoyed the children’s corner and drew a nice picture titled, “Keep Bhutan Green.”
