Cambodia: Brand New Shoes - A Luxury Item
CBN.com – CAMBODIA –In December 2009, CBN Cambodia gave new shoes to over 5,000 people in remote areas throughout the region. They were Christmas gifts to go along with the good news of the true meaning of Christmas.
Sa Eoun lives in Mean Chey Village, a farming community. She has never owned a pair of new shoes before and is thrilled with the bright white tennis shoes that are just her size.
“I’m very, very happy,” she says. “This is the first time that I get it . . . I never have nice shoes like this before, because I am poor. I don’t have money to buy it.”
People in Sa Eoun’s village work hard to survive. They have small family farms and everyone helps in planting, tending, and harvesting. If the season goes well, they have plenty to eat and some to sell for income. If not, they ration themselves to live off of what they were able to reap. Oftentimes, they go to neighboring rice fields and earn wages as laborers. It’s a hard life, working the land for meager wages in the hot sun. It is the only life they know and they are diligent to stay alive.
Many of the people who got these shoes had never had a new pair of shoes before, even the elderly. They were sincerely thankful for the useful gifts. New shoes are a luxury item to these villagers. Smiles lit up their faces as they opened the shoe boxes and found the sparkling new shoes. They will always remember the day they all got new shoes from CBN Cambodia and they will always have the good feeling that someone cared about them.
