CBN.com UKRAINE - Thousands of children are growing up in orphanages with stories of broken families in Ukraine, a country with some of the highest alcoholism rates in Europe. Kolinenska, a remote village in southern Ukraine with 1,500 people, has two children’s orphanages in its small farming community. The local farmers have been in the village for years and the orphaned children come from various local cities and towns.
The children live with bare necessities and routine days. However, for 10 days in June, 70 children living in one of the orphanages experienced a change in their daily routines when CBN’s Orphan’s Promise sponsored a camp on their grounds. Centered on the theme of “Life Skills” and life beyond the orphanage, the volunteers of the camp used daily lessons and games to connect with the youth and tell them about Jesus.
The youth, ranging from ages 8-18, were hesitant to join in the activities during the first couple days of camp, but soon were begging the leaders not to leave!
One of the day’s activities included a scavenger hunt throughout the village in which the youth had to complete various tasks - including buying enough food for one day for $3, the daily sum that orphans are given as a stipend when they graduate from the orphanages in Ukraine.
On the scavenger hunt the youth also had to find an older person in the village and find out about the local history. Tanya, one of the 15-year-old girls, said that this activity was her favorite, “It was so interesting learning more about the way Kolinenska used to be and getting the chance to leave the orphanage for the afternoon.”
The day before departing, Lena, a 16-year-old girl at the orphanage, pulled one of the leaders aside to thank her for the camp. “A lot of the kids here may not appreciate what you do for us, the time and money you spent to be here; but I want you to know that I do. I know you sacrifice to be here and share with us about God, and I am so thankful for this.”
Thank you CBN partners for making camps like the one in Kolinenska possible - together we are bringing hope to youth like Lena, and other orphans throughout the world.
