Living Water Wells and Cisterns

Rescued from the Deep Well Waters
CBN Operation Blessing India

CBN.comINDIA –The families of rural Maharastra retrieve their daily water from a large agricultural well at the outskirts of their village. They walk through crop fields and on muddy roads to reach the precipice of the well. No guard rails or other protective barriers border the bank that opens to the deep water 30 feet below. Every day, men, women and children from over 400 families lower empty buckets suspended by ropes into the well and raise full buckets to the surface. The ledge of the drop-off to the water below is often slippery. With so many families and their livestock dependent on this well, accidents are bound to happen.

One day, as 14-year-old Anitha lowered a bucket for her family’s water, her small body was knocked into the well by a buffalo that backed into her near the ledge. She could not climb out of the well and was terrified that she would drown. She screamed for help as she managed to stay afloat. Several men working in nearby fields came to her rescue. They worked together with ropes and hoisted her to the surface. Anitha’s left hand was fractured and it took almost 6 months for it to completely heal. She was not able to attend school nor do her exams, which meant that she was not able to get promoted to the next grade with her classmates. So she stayed at home and helped her family by fetching water and other chores.

new wellOver the years, there have been several accidents involving the open well. The village desperately needed a safe solution. A local pastor contacted CBN’s Operation Blessing and asked for help. In a short time, CBN India had their Operation Blessing Living Waters team on board to provide a new well for the village. They surveyed the area and drilled a bore well in the middle of the village. When the water flowed from the new well, there were all smiles of relief on the faces of the villagers, including Anitha. The villagers thanked the Living Waters team and the Pastor for helping them with a new hand pump. The Operation Blessing team also encouraged Anitha to continue with her studies.
