CAMBODIA - Children born with cleft lip or cleft palate have larger hurdles to overcome than the obvious. Babies are often unable to nurse and their mothers have to devise alternative ways for their babies to get nutrition from day one. As they age and learn to speak, people cannot understand what they are saying. Their little mouths do not get better with age. They carry a lifelong deformity if nothing is done. The parents of the children pictured here are all poor rice farmers in Cambodia who had no hope of affording surgeries that their children desperately needed.
However, as you can see, each child has received life-changing surgery. During the summer of 2010, CBN's staff learned of each child's need and arranged for them to get free surgery in Phnom Penh. Words can hardly express the gratitude that these families have for these surgeries.
Chag Eab's mother shared her gratefulness saying, “I would like to thank CBN and donors who provide this help from far distance. Thank for changing my son’s life with hope and joy to live a normal life. Thank you!”
Sreychab lived with cleft palate for 11 years before her miracle surgery. When she spoke, no one could understand her; so she stopped saying anything at school. After recovering from surgery, she told us, "Thanks for sharing love and changing my life to be normal like my friends. I am getting brave and speaking at school. I am so happy. Thank you!"
The youngest recipient, a baby boy named Gneat, had severe cleft lip. The surgeons did excellent work. His mother said, "I'm so happy with this change! Gneat has a bright future. I would like to thank CBN and donors who provided this help. You showed you cared by visiting Gneat in the hospital and paying for his surgery, transportation for us to get to Phnom Penh, and meals. Thank you!"
