Blessing a Barren Womb
Nigeria
January 2012
Esther and her husband Theodore were a seemingly happy couple. Esther ran a small provision store where the neighborhood came to buy items like sugar, salt, oil and other household items. Theodore was a bus driver. They were a hard working couple, doing alright but for one thing ... after eight years of marriage, they were childless.
In a society like Nigeria that regards childlessness in marriage as abnormal, the pressure on the couple to call it quits and split up was very high. “It was a burden I carried around every day,” Esther recalls. “There was a lot of pressure from my family and friends to leave my husband and end the marriage.”
In their desperation, the couple sought help from a witch doctor. “We became idol worshippers and gave the juju priest all our money. He promised us we would have children; but instead of getting a solution, things got worse for us,” Esther says. Not long after, their businesses began to crumble and they had to sell virtually everything they owned.
That’s when their friend invited them to watch The 700 Club. To their astonishment, as they watched the program, Gordon Robertson was talking about Hannah and how she trusted God for a child! My husband and I said to each other, “... ahhh, that sounds like us!” The couple heard about the awesome power of God and how He alone could bless them with the fruit of the womb, fulfilling their heart’s desires. They prayed with the host to accept Jesus Christ into their lives and also prayed a prayer of faith with Gordon, trusting God for the miracle of a child.
Barely a month after they prayed, they received the incredible news that they were expecting a baby. Nine months later, Esther delivered a healthy bouncing baby boy! They named him ‘Gordon’, after The 700 Club host they had prayed with!
