New Living Water Well
CBN.com SENEGAL - Drinking water from their nearest water source often made the people of Fomal, Senegal sick. What could they do? They had no water supply of their own. The round trip walk for water was over three miles to the nearest source, an uncovered water well of a neighboring village. Dust, debris, and parasites contaminated the water; but drinking it was better than perishing from thirst.
CBN's regional office in Dakar, Senegal, learned of this village's need from a pastor near Fomal. Through CBN's Living Water Projects, Bread of Life, a French speaking church in Belgium partnered with CBN to fund the new water well for this village. The well was completed in late June, 2010.
A dedication celebration was held by the people of Fomal. Joy flowed as freely as the water while the women danced and everyone sang and rejoiced. The ceremony was attended by nearby villages, as well as regional and local government authorities. Several of them gave speeches expressing their heartfelt gratitude to CBN and their partners for this timely gift. The people also constructed a plaque that translates, “Jesus loves you. This well is the gift of the Church Bread of Life.”
Several people from the village gave personal testimonies expressing their appreciation. A woman in tears told a story of how once she was prevented from fetching water by the men who were at the well before her. They told her that she would have to wait until their animals had finished drinking the water that they were giving them.
“By this gesture, CBN has saved women from this type of humiliation and suffering as we now have this well very close to us,” she said.
Another woman expressed her thanks to CBN and said, “By providing this well, CBN has saved us and our children from water-borne diseases in the bad quality of the water we used to use.”
The villagers were so happy that they brought their children in large numbers to the pastor who is CBN’s contact person there for Sunday School Bible teachings. As a result, the pastor started a vibrant Sunday School there with the children in the village and those of surrounding villages.
Bringing clean drinking water demonstrates the compassion of Jesus Christ to people who are thirsty. Their bodies are nourished with water and their souls are nourished with the truths of God’s love. When you partner with CBN, a portion of every gift goes to providing new water wells and cisterns, spreading the gospel through international TV broadcasts, helping orphans, hosting medical missions, feeding the hungry, giving free cleft lip and palate surgery, and responding to disasters with essential needs. Jon Cassel writes from the field in Senegal:
"The villagers did not know what to think of strangers showing up and putting in a well for them at their own expense. Needless to say, they were quite grateful! When the well was completed, we went out for the dedication service, which is held at the commissioning of the well and the gospel is presented. The villagers and dignitaries from the region showed up, and we had a very nice ceremony.
Pastor told me there at the ceremony that the village had opened up to two Christian women from Pastor Albert’s village to go every Sunday morning and have a Sunday School with the children of the village! I asked the pastor how Muslim parents could let their children attend Sunday School, and he said it is all of the Lord! The children there are now being reached! This is what it’s all about! This past week he called our office to announce the chief of the village had accorded a small parcel of land on which to build a church. This a wonderful example of how CBN's humanitarian work opens doors to reach people for Christ."
