How Debbie Macomber Combines Faith with Hollywood

CBN.comCEDAR COVE HAPPENINGS

Debbie’s latest novel, Silver Linings, follows an innkeeper named Jo Marie.  Jo Marie lost her husband in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan and purchased a bed and breakfast in Cedar Cove called Rose Harbor.  As she starts a new life, Jo Marie develops a strong friendship with her handyman, Mark, who later discloses his true feelings for her.  When Mark announces he is moving from Cedar Cove, Jo Marie is baffled, wondering why Mark does not disclose much of his past to her.  As she discovers the secret behind Mark’s decision to leave, Jo Marie welcomes two visitors, Coco and Katie, who have returned to Cedar Cove for the 10 year high-school reunion.  Coco and Katie hope to face old hurts, right old wrongs, and to find a sense of closure.

Season three of Hallmark Channel’s Cedar Cove TV series premiered July 18, 2015.  “I never dreamed that I would have a TV series based on my stories,” says Debbie.  In 2013, Hallmark Channel aired a 2-hour original movie based on Debbie’s Cedar Cove series starring Andie MacDowell.  Currently they are working on the 8th movie for television airing at Christmas entitled Dashing Through the Snow.

GIFT OF STORYTELLING

Debbie’s stories of love, forgiveness, loss and hope have captivated both readers and viewers.  She has become the leading voice in women’s fiction.  “I write in the secular market,” says Debbie.  “You can’t separate my faith from my writing.”  Her style is completely opposite of what is popular.  “My values come through in my writing,” she says.

She struggled in school and didn’t learn to read until she was 10 years old.  Debbie was dyslexic and didn’t find out until her children were diagnosed with the same learning disability.  “I assumed I was dumb,” says Debbie.  She had always dreamed of being published and started writing, but she was fearful someone would laugh at her or tell her she would never be published.  When her cousin died, Debbie decided to be more proactive about her dream.  She rented a typewriter at the age of 30 and started her first book.  Five years later, she sold her first book, Heartsong, to Silhouette Books.  Debbie was featured in Newsweek, and the demand for her books quickly exceeded her wildest dreams.  With over 170 million books in print, Debbie is a regular on the New York Times bestseller lists.  Nine of her novels have been made into movies made for television; two of her books have been turned into plays.

In 1972, one of Debbie’s neighbors invited her to a Bible study at church.  Soon Debbie started reading on her own and developed a relationship with the Lord.  “God gave me the gift of story telling,” she says.  “My mission statement is to be a blessing.  My books may not change the world, but they will brighten someone’s weekend.”
