CHURCH OF THE WEEK

An Oasis in the Desert

CBN.comLife after prison… most ex-inmates can’t cut it.

Every month the state of Arizona releases 30,000 prisoners. They get a bus ticket and $50. Many wind up right back in prison. Others become homeless and go back to their old habits.

The Oasis Church in Tucson is trying to change that with their Old Pueblo Community Foundation Program.

They take inmates just released from prison, provide transitional housing for them, and do what they can to help them get back on their feet.

The Oasis Church doesn’t have a church building. Instead they use their resources to help these men and women.

Pastor Mark says, “We’ve seen a lot of families get back together. We’ve seen marriages restored. We’ve seen lot of people successfully make it in the world, hold down a job, pay bills, and become productive citizens.”

In order for them to stay in transitional housing, they must adhere to some rules.

“When they come here, first and foremost they have to stay clean and follow directions,” says Nick Jones. “We will help them get to work. They have to have a full-time job. They have to learn all over again how to take care of themselves.”

Over the last 10 years, the Old Pueblo Community Foundation has helped more than 3,000 ex-cons, recovering addicts, or formerly homeless individuals transition back into society. One former participant is now on staff after a complete turnaround in his life.

Greg says, “I wake up. I’m free. I have God in my life, a good foundation, and good people in my life. Actually I have the opportunity to help others. If it weren’t for other people, I wouldn’t be here. That’s the truth”

For giving former inmates a fresh start in life, The 700 Club salutes you, the Oasis Church in Tucson, Arizona.
