CBN.com – “When I made the phone call, I was just desperate. I wanted to have someone listen to the situation that I was in, because I wanted out. I was at the point where I was ready to end my life and just let it die.”
Due to the sensitive nature of her HIV status, she asked that we not reveal her name. But she says the help she received is life-changing.
“They wouldn’t let me give up.”
She’s talking about the HIV outreach of Abundant Life International Baptist Cathedral. Bishop Aubrey Mullen, Jr., says the church’s mission is clear.
“Because of the stigma that exists because of HIV and AIDS, there’s a pocket of people who are being left behind,” Bishop Mullen says. “So our desire is to go into those cracks of our society and let them know that we love them.”
Sheila Guion leads their HIV outreach ministry. Their goal is to provide for the needs of those suffering with the HIV infection.
“The first thing we want to find out [is] how far along they are. How far has the disease progressed and then try and get them into care,” Sheila says. “Not only do we have to identify those resources but we have to tap in to it. Then we’ve got to find a way to get there.
“When we meet people we don’t know where they are spiritually. But it is interesting that as we begin to talk and relate to them where they are, the subject almost always comes up.”
One mother, whose son passed away last year, says the ministry was a Godsend.
“He lived on his own,” she says. “He lived in his own place, and they provided different things that he needed for his apartment — natural and spiritually.”
For their outreach to those struggling with HIV, The 700 Club commends Abundant Life International Baptist Cathedral of Jacksonville, North Carolina, as being America’s Church of the Week.
