CHURCH OF THE WEEK

El Buen Pastor

By Pam Miller
The 700 Club

CBN.com In a Miami community where guns and drug deals are as common as convenience stores, there is a bright spot -- El Buen Pastor, Church of the Nazarene.

"We don’t care how they come dressed. We don’t want to make them uncomfortable. We want them to feel really welcome here," says Nora Santiestaban, who, along with her husband, Mel, helps rehabilitate drug addicts in Miami through their church program.

"We are treating every type of person who has drug problems. There are people who come from under bridges," adds Mel Santiestaban, pastor at El Buen Pastor.

"Most of the families are grandparents who are left with the grandkids because the parents are on drugs. [There are] a lot of single mothers," Nora explains.

"I am not able to solve everyone’s problem, but the church is able to help everyone," says Mel. "To all that come here, our motto is 'we are going to help you.' "

Because of El Buen Pastor’s drug rehab program, several men who went through the program are developing their rap music instead of a rap sheet. Carwashes bring in some of the needed money for these men to live in El Buen Pastor’s drug rehab home, which Mel says is "the No. 1 program in south Florida for rehabilitating people."

"We opened up with two rooms. Now we have 50 men going through the programs," says Nora.

For working to rehabilitate drug addicts and training strong families, The 700 Club commends El Buen Pastor (The Good Shepherd), Church of the Nazarene, in Miami, Fla.
