One South Carolina church decided to make Super Bowl Sunday
more than just a day of watching football.
Spring Valley Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C., started
the Souper Bowl of Caring to help hungry and hurting people. This
Souper Bowl encourages churches, schools, and organizations to
collect money in “soup pots” on Super Bowl Sunday.
The collected money is then sent to a neighborhood soup kitchen
or food bank in the church’s local area.
"Why not use this event as a catalyst to care for the least
of these our neighbors?" Brad Smith, founder and executive
director of the program, suggested.
At the end of the project, participants report their total donations
to the Souper Bowl of Caring volunteer staff. The first year,
22 churches participated and raised close to $6,000 for the homeless
and needy.
Today, the Souper Bowl of Caring is a nationwide ministry that
generates more than $4 million for charities across the country—an
effort that has even been recognized by first lady Laura Bush.
"One person alone cannot do everything, but these young people
show us that one person can do something," said Mrs. Bush.
