ABOUT AZUSA STREET
Los Angeles was not the only place and time of spiritual renewal. The Spirit of God was being poured out in other parts of the world simultaneously. Several years prior to the 1906 outpouring, sincere Christians in Los Angeles had been praying for revival and seeking more of God. In Minnesota, North Carolina and Texas, the spiritual manifestations accompanying the outpouring of the Holy Spirit were taking place and included remarkable healings, complete transformations of lifestyle, deliverance from ungodly habits, speaking in unknown languages, etc.

In 1905, Los Angeles native Neely Terry made a trip to Houston, Texas. She attended the church that William Seymour was pastoring. Neely was impressed with Seymour’s preaching and told her church about him. They invited Seymour, an uneducated son of former slaves, to visit LA.

On February 22, 1906, Seymour (though not filled with the Holy Spirit) preached on regeneration, sanctification, faith healing and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Some felt he should discontinue preaching because he had not yet experienced what he was preaching. Seymour continued, and those in the congregation spent hours in prayer. The group continued to pray and conducted services at the home of Richard and Ruth Asbery. Others learned about the services and began to attend, including some white families of nearby holiness churches.

Then on April 9, 1906 a breakthrough occurred when a man named Edward Lee began to speak in tongues. A few days later, Seymour finally received his baptism in the Holy Spirit after praying all night. People came from everywhere and soon the crowds became too large. The meetings moved to an empty building, formerly a church, which was being used to store construction materials, hay and livestock located at 312 Azusa Street.

The press learned of revival services and reports were published throughout the US and the world. Today there are more than 600 million Pentecostal and Charismatic believers across the globe.
