Monica Abbott: Batters Beware

CBN.comWhen Monica Abbott steps on the mound, opposing batters know that getting on base won’t be easy.

At only 22-years-old, this softball phenomenon has received more honors and awards than many top athletes accumulate in a career.  Monica’s a two-time World Cup Champion and has earned a spot on the 2008 U.S. National Team.

All of Monica’s success on the playing field only disguised the spiritual confusion she felt in her personal life.

“My life was kind of like a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster,” Monica said. “I knew there was something missing. I always wanted to do my best, but I was struggling with it.”

And without a solid spiritual compass, she chose a path many college students take.

“I was definitely going out and dating, meeting guys, and all that stuff that goes along with it - the drinking type stuff, staying out late and not putting, you know, things that I didn’t need to put first in my life,” Monica said.

Even though her lifestyle felt good at the time, Monica lacked a sense of peace.

“Still at the back of my mind, God was always there, pushing me and saying like, ‘well why are you doing this?’  Or, ‘this isn’t you,” Monica said.

“Let’s say I had to go out that night or something and had a great time,” Monica said. “Then I would kind of be like the next morning, the next day or two, I’d be like, ‘why did I do that?’  I know that that’s not who I am, but I’m still doing it.  And I had to kind of break away from being a follower to just being my own self and being a leader and finding my way.”

Monica began attending meetings of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“I just started seeing our FCA Pastor and just started talking to him a little bit about it and  I on my own did a little bit more reading and stuff like that,” Monica said. “And then I committed my life to Christ.”

“I definitely felt different about my life immediately - my emotions and just a calming sense, a sense of peace, and just knowing that He was with me at all times, being able to go out and glorify Him has been my greatest joy,” Monica said.

Now, as Monica prepares to take the world stage next month at the Beijing Olympics she’s hoping to spread that joy.
