CBN.com — Alba and Abelia are identical twins. Because they are nearly blind, they must feel their way along a long chain fence in order to walk to school.

Sitting side by side, the sisters told us about their blindness.

“We see what is near,” said Alba.  “We don´t see anything far away,” added Abelia. “We have many headaches.”

Their juvenile cataracts started developing soon after they were born.  To help them navigate around their house, their dad taught them to count the steps between rooms.

“We count ten steps from the kitchen to the bedroom,” Alba told us.

Meanwhile, attending school is becoming more and more of a challenge.

“We often feel sad.  Some days we feel like quitting school and staying home,” said Abelia.

When the girl’s parents couldn’t afford surgery, they turned to an old folk tradition using a fish.

“We thought we could take the curse away from the girls by rubbing a fish on their eyes,” the girl’s mother Mateo told us.   “Obviously, it didn’t work.”

So Operation Blessing arranged to take the girls to a hospital in the city.

There—a simple surgery—changed everything!

“Before I could not see hardly anything, now I can see everything!” said and excited Alba.  “I can see the coconuts on the top of our tree; I can see my house and all the animals passing by.”

The girls have now returned to school filled with hope.

“Thanks to Operation Blessing for operating on my eyes. And thanks to God and a big applause to them!” said Alba with a smile.
