Irrigation Brings New Life to a Struggling Family

Grandma Mana and Grandpa Prasit began raising their 3 grandchildren after their parents abandoned them. “We took them in as soon as the twins were born,” Grandma Mana recalled. “I thank God for my grandchildren. They bring me joy.”

9-year-old Aum and her twin sister Oom do everything together, including helping Grandma.
“Grandma and Grandpa take good care of me,” said Aum. “I like helping Grandma hang up the laundry and clean the house.”

Grandpa is a farm laborer. Grandma sells herbs that she grows in her small garden.  Her greatest challenge is having enough water to keep the plants alive, especially during the 6-month dry season.  When Grandma can’t sell herbs and Grandpa can’t find work,  everyone goes hungry.

“We spend half the day looking for a few snails for our grandchildren to eat. I think about working in the city to send them money for food. But I can’t bring myself to leave them,” said Grandma. 

“I asked my grandparents, ‘Are you going to eat today?’” recalled Aum.  “They say they’re not hungry yet, but I know they are. I feel so bad for them.”  

We first met the family through an after-school program supported by CBN’s Orphan’s Promise. Right away we gave them some emergency food. 

Next, to help Grandma increase her business selling vegetables, we purchased and installed a drip irrigation system—which delivers water from a community water source. “The drip irrigation system makes the soil in my garden very moist. My vegetables are beautiful!”

Now, she says she has a variety of fresh vegetables which she sells to restaurants and members of the community.  With the profit, she was able to start a second business making chili powder. Grandma’s income has tripled, and her grandchildren no longer go hungry.

“We received God’s love through Orphan’s Promise, and I want others to experience God’s blessings, too! 

“Now, I’m not hungry anymore, and I have a better future. Thank you!” added Aum.
