How Their Income Grew 300%

When Rob and Star Nguyen committed to tithing, they had no idea how God would use their obedience to bless people around the world. As newlyweds in 1993, tithing didn’t seem possible.  Money was often in such short supply the couple had yard sales just to buy food.

Rob recalls, “It was just a cycle of working, getting money and using it to survive. If I could just pay my bills, that was good.”

10 years into their marriage, Star was a stay-at-home mom raising their two boys. The family was barely surviving on Rob’s income as an apprentice lineman. Their budget was tight, yet they gave when they could.  Then, a sermon on Malachi 3:10 changed their perspective.

Rob shares, “I realized that we were robbing God. I said, we need to be tithing. It’s not that God needs our money, He needs our discipline. He wants our obedience.”

Star recalls, “For me to put it on paper, it would not make sense. How, could we survive if we gave 10% or more? We definitely prayed about it and budgeting the tithing was a little bit scary for me, but at the same time, we also were just trusting the Lord.”

Almost immediately their faith was tested when their only vehicle needed significant repairs. They kept tithing and took out two high- interest payday loans.

Rob remembers, “It was very scary, but at the same time, there was an overwhelming peace that I knew that God would fulfill His word.”

Star shares, “A lot of sleepless nights, a lot of praying. We still had that agreement and that faith with God that He will come through.”

And he did. A few days after taking out the loans, Rob was able to work extra shifts as a lineman, earning enough to pay off the loans and put four months of savings in the bank.

Rob says, “I was thankful that God heard our prayers, but I was also thankful that God honored His word.”

Rob’s salary continued to increase and two years later they were able to buy a house. Continuing to follow God’s direction, the Nguyens opened their home to foster care and adoption. By 2007 they were now a family of 10.

Star recalls, “This is what the Lord asked us to do, and again if the Lord would provide for us, just because there's more mouths to feed there was never a question that He was not gonna provide for them.”

With a heart for missions, the family moved to South Africa in 2013 to fix up an orphanage and share the gospel. Even on the mission field they continued to tithe on the support they received.

Star shares, “The Lord definitely showed himself to be trustworthy with money because every time we would give and we needed something, it was there.”

After two years, the Nguyens return to the U.S. and started their lives over from scratch.

Rob says, “We came back to the U.S. with nothing except a suitcase and the Lord just miraculously restored everything from a car to a home.”

Rob got his lineman job back with a $20,000 signing bonus. In addition to their tithes, they continue to give 5% of their income to the orphanage in South Africa. Since that first tithe in 2003, the Nguyen’s income has grown by more than 300 percent. Something they attribute to trusting God to provide.

Star shares, “Take the challenge like we did. Jump both feet in and trust the Lord. Cause He’s proven Himself true over and over again.”

Rob says, “I one hundred percent would encourage people to tithe and give because I know that God will use those finances to bless beyond what I can ever imagine.”
