“They are the world's most vulnerable population – the millions of children in countries on every continent who are trapped in poverty, exploited by evil, and orphaned or infected by disease.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people to date, and children are not immune to the disease. Tens of millions of children are affected by AIDS, whether they were orphaned when the disease took their parents of they themselves were infected. The overwhelming number of children without parents is straining the social and family safety net in Africa as orphanages and extended families struggle to keep up with the burden. And those infected with AIDS are today’s lepers: often cast off by families and ostracized by the community.

But disease isn’t the only enemy: poverty robs more children of their futures than AIDS. The International Labor Organizations says about 250 million children between the ages of five and fourteen in developing countries are forced to work; and nearly half of them sacrifice going to school to work full-time. Those who don’t work are sent to the streets to beg for food money, where they are targets for the criminals that abduct and sell children into the sex trade.

A small army of compassion is trying to help these millions of young victims.  Scores of Christian ministries are working to help homeless and abused children get off the streets. And AIDS ministries are helping these youngest victims get the medical treatment, and love, they need to continue living.
