Discipleship Journal Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Discipleship Journal magazine is celebrating its 25th year of publishing in 2006, one of the few nondenominational Christian magazines to reach this milestone. The magazine’s readership now tops 230,000, with numerous Christian leaders among the long-time subscriber base.

Discipleship Journal is issued six times per year, filled with highly practical articles that help readers develop a deeper relationship with God by understanding Scripture and applying it to daily life. As part of its anniversary celebration, Discipleship Journal is offering special subscription pricing ($17 for one year) and is inviting consumers to enter their 25th Anniversary Sweepstakes with a Grand Prize of a four-day, three-night stay at the Glen Eyrie Conference Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

An award-winning publication of NavPress Periodicals, Discipleship Journal (DJ) enjoys a subscription base of 112,000 and a readership of more than double that number. Editor Sue Kline has been part of the Discipleship Journal editorial team for twelve years. “I've dreamed of working on Discipleship Journal from the day I received the first issue in 1981," she recalls. Today she is entrusted with keeping the original DJ vision alive while developing fresh design and creative content for the future.

One long-time DJ reader is New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado, who values the magazine’s impact on his own life and ministry. “DJ has been a constant companion to me in my ministry,” writes Lucado. “I’m deeply indebted to and thankful for the hundreds of articles I’ve read and benefited from over the years—every one gets filed for future reference.”

Other recognizable Christian leaders, such as author/pastor John Ortberg and author Joni Eareckson Tada, are faithful DJ readers. And research reveals that the vast majority of DJ’s readers have their own circles of influence—84% are involved in local ministry and 86% are active in missions efforts.

Discipleship Journal is unique among Christian periodicals. It is not a denominational publication—no one denomination represents more than a fraction of the subscriber base. But it does enjoy a unique focus—helping readers to become disciples of Jesus Christ and to disciple others. Other elements unique to the magazine, since day one, are the thematic sections and the original artwork included in each issue:

  • Practical articles: The DJ editorial team chooses a theme for each issue (six per year) and develops a team of writers to explore three to five different aspects of the topic. The result is a broad and varied discussion of a single topic. Research shows that readers spend an average of two hours reading a single DJ issue, no doubt due in part to these special sections.
  • Original artwork: Not only do the editors carefully plan the content of each issue, but original artwork is intentionally integrated to help readers connect with the content more effectively. Many of the pieces of art featured in DJ are specially commissioned for the magazine.

Some of the highlights of the anniversary celebration include a consumer sweepstakes program, national publicity efforts and special subscription pricing. The sweepstakes runs from February 1 through August 31, 2006, and consumers can enter at the DJ website:

Special anniversary pricing of $17 for a one-year subscription (six issues) is available throughout 2006. Individual and bulk subscriptions are available online at www.navpress.com/magazines/dj or by calling 800-877-1811.

Discipleship Journal is published six times per year by NavPress Periodicals, a ministry of The Navigators. The Navigators, an international organization involved in Christian service for more than 70 years, is dedicated to “knowing Christ and making Him known.” The Navigators’ international headquarters, which houses the editorial offices of Discipleship Journal, are located in Colorado Springs, CO.
