Hurricane Relief Update: Prayer for Peace is Needed; Operation Blessing is on the Scene

It is significant to recognize that within one year, we have experienced one of the worst natural disasters in world history and now the worst natural disaster in American history. It is a time for prayer, but also a time for action. Please prayerfully consider what you can do to help your fellow Americans in this desperate time of need.

As we watch this tragic story unfolding before our eyes through live, 24-hour-a-day news coverage, the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction is slowly being realized. We must pray...

  • that peace will be maintained in the midst extremely difficult circumstances;
  • that disease would be minimized;
  • that people left homeless from the storm would find a safe place to stay with adequate facilities for sanitation;
  • that government officials would have God's wisdom in dealing with the aftermath of this terrible storm;
  • that the Church would unite to pray and to act on behalf of those affected by this tragedy;
  • that through this difficult season, people would come to see the goodness of God and that many would come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As government officials and non-government charitable agencies assess the recovery efforts, Operation Blessing teams are now on the ground in the storm-ravaged regions of the U.S. Gulf Coast -- and OB volunteers are mobilizing nationwide to keep the trucks loaded and rolling to the areas that are in the greatest need.

Even before Katrina struck, OBI tractor-trailer trucks were already on the move, ensuring partner agencies were stocked with emergency relief supplies for immediate distribution.

OBI is now collaborating with emergency officials and making final assessments of the heavily-impacted areas. Together with partner agencies like the Salvation Army, a large-scale disaster response is unfolding.

Truckloads of food and mobile kitchen equipment have been delivered by OBI to Salvation Army staging areas in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.

After four mobile kitchens and dozens of mobile canteens from partnering groups are in place, OBI will help to provide up to 310,000 meals a day to storm victims in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.

OBI is also working with local churches and other non-profit charities to determine strategic and effective ways to bring aid to those struggling to cope in the aftermath of the brutal hurricane.
