The Body of Christ In Action -- How You Can Help Hurricane Victims

Evangelist Franklin Graham, in conversations with Christian Emergency Network (CEN) CEO Mary Marr, has agreed that it is critically important that Christians respond to Hurricane Katrina with Christian love through the unified message of prayer-care-share that is central to the mission of CEN.

Graham, who has departed for a 48-hour tour of Biloxi, Miss., Mobile, Ala., and Shreveport, La., shared with Marr that he will “encourage Christians to express with one voice the hope that is within us” as he visits the region and victims.

CBN is a member of the Christian Emergency Network, an organization that was established after September 11, 2001, by several Mission America Coalition partners (a coalition of 500 leaders and 80+ denominations) to respond effectively in a national crisis, giving the hope of Jesus Christ. CEN now has over 1,000 ministry and media partners. For more information on CEN, check out their Web site.

The Body of Christ Rises to Respond

Minstries across the country are joning groups like Operation Blessing and the Christian Emergency Network to call on Christians to act at this critical time:

  • Operation Blessing has launched Project Church Welcome to coordinate local churches in helping to find temporary homes for victims of Hurricane Katrina. For more information on Project Church Welcome, click here or call 1-800-700-Club (2582).
  • The American Family Association (AFA) is also coordinating churches to take in evacuees.
  • Strang Communication's humanitarian arm, Christian Life Missions, is providing immediate support to hurricane victims. Strang Communications has agreed to cover all overhead costs for this project.
  • National Day of Prayer Task Force Chairwoman Shirley Dobson has called for intensified prayer. “By uniting in prayer as a nation, we can avail ourselves of the wisdom that only God provides. By petitioning Him for mercy and grace, people everywhere can be a very real and necessary part of the hope and healing. Through prayer, we can access the power of God Himself."
  • Focus on the Family is coordinating relief efforts through several relief organizations, including Samaritan's Purse and the Salvation Army.
  • The Convoy of Hope has delivered more than 110 truckloads (more than 5 million pounds) of ice, water, food and baby supplies to hurricane victims. The General Council of the Assemblies of God is working with the Convoy of Hope to respond with acts of compassion and practical help.
  • As I reported yesterday, The LA Dream Center has committed to house up to 300 evacuees (families with children). They will provide transportation to the Dream Center and back when their homes are ready -- and will also provide food, housing, and clothing for the duration of the rebuilding period.

These are only a few of the hundreds of ministries and churches that are rushing aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Please prayerfully consider how you can help in this time of national crisis.
