Adam Cunningham

Track Star Record Works

CBN.comIt took an awesome miracle in newcomer Adam Cunningham’s life to make God real to him, and it is this vivid certainty of God’s unfathomable power, love, and forgiveness that led to this 28-year-old becoming the celebrated worship leader and passionate songwriter he is today. The heartfelt songs on Adam’s self-titled debut Trackstar Recordworks album are a worshipful testament to his deep love for God, and a spiritual inspiration to all who hear them.

Adam grew up in a Christian home outside Muscatine, Iowa, and added his vocals to his family’s singing ministry when he was just seven years old—the year he also began classical music training. But, during his high school years he became apathetic about his faith, and by the time he was nineteen years old he was earning more money than he ever imagined he would, and believed he had no need for God.

That was until his second son, Brock, was born with a major medical condition. After hearing the dire diagnosis from the doctor, and seeing his son taken away to have immediate surgery, Adam found himself on his knees in the hospital waiting room pleading for forgiveness, and pledging his life to God in return for his son’s life. “There were no family, no friends there. The only one I had to turn to was God,” Adam recalls.

“I had been a terrible husband and father. I truly believed I didn’t need anyone, that I was ‘the man’, that I had all ‘the hook-ups’, but suddenly I found myself in a situation I couldn’t fix,” Adam says. “God used the miracle of my son’s healing to open my eyes to the kind of person I had become. I know Brock is alive and well today because of God’s grace and forgiveness. God gave us our son.”

Adam immediately quit his high-paying job as a car dealership finance manager in Iowa because he wanted to do something for God. He and his wife and two children moved into his father-in-law’s garage, and he worked at a nearby rental center while he prayed about what to do next.

“I had to learn to live all over again,” Adam remembers. “It wasn’t easy—I had to unlearn all the negative ways I had learned at work, and I had to ask everyone around me who I had hurt for forgiveness. My wife and I hadn’t been getting along well, and I had been indifferent in my relationship with my parents.” Today, Adam says his relationship with his parents, who diligently loved and prayed for him during his prodigal years, is “phenomenal”.

During a short time at Bible College in North Carolina, Adam began playing guitar for the first time since he was a child, and started writing songs. “I hadn’t owned a guitar for years,” he says, “but suddenly I had songs I had to write, and I realized how much I loved doing music—that it was a gift God had given me to use.” Many of the songs on his first project were written during this time, including “Ways Unseen,” which is about his wife’s struggles during the years he was “not around.”

Adam became the worship leader of a contemporary worship service at a small First Baptist Church in Mocksville, North Carolina, for six months, and was then invited to become the worship leader at a Calvary Baptist Church near Winston-Salem. During the one-and-a-half years he ministered there, the worship service grew 400 percent from three hundred attendees to twelve hundred.

Adam then moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and became the worship leader at The Loop, a citywide, non-denominational young adults ministry. He has since led worship on the 2006 Dove Award-winning album, His Renown, as well as on the Dove Award-nominated album, The Word Alive.

In March 2006 Trackstar Recordworks, the recent home of Christian music’s enduring group 4HIM, offered Adam a record deal. He recorded his self-titled debut Adam Cunningham during the summer of 2006 with distinguished veteran producer Michael Omartian at the legendary Sound Kitchen.

The first single “You Are My God” goes to radio in January, and the album, which showcases the engaging strength and range of Adam’s warm voice and charismatic presence, will be in stores on March 6, 2007.
