CBNmusic's Best Contemporary Christian Albums of 2007

By CBNmusic

CBN.comThe CBNmusic and CBN.com staff has spoken! The following are the best albums released in 2007. Much to our surprise, '07 was the year of the worship leader. Several of this year's best work served as vertical praise to the Most High.

Remedy Remedy by David Crowder Band

(sixsteps/Sparrow Records)
While most critics agree that Remedy can't hold a candle to the epic A Collision, Crowder and his band of merry musicians prove that they can still make a powerful praise and worship album. Techno anthems and sweet odes to the Lord combine to make a project that could very well save the world. Album Highlights: “Everything Glorious” and “Remedy”

Portable Sounds
Portable Sounds by tobyMac

(Forefront Records)
tobyMac just keeps getting better and better, and his third album of original solo grooves is audible evidence. Setting aside the party jams that keep you dancing, Portable Sounds brings together Toby's enduring love for Christ and longing for one world united under God. Album Highlights: "One World " and "Ignition "

Oh! Gravity.
Oh! Gravity. by Switchfoot

(Columbia/Sparrow Records)
This album was a late release just before New Year's Eve last year, but it's impact in 2007 is nothing short of phenomenal. Switchfoot makes its best album to date and solidifies itself as a band to be reckoned with by both Christian and mainstream critics. Album Highlights: "Awakening” and “Dirty Second Hands ”

The Altar and The Door
The Altar and The Door by Casting Crowns

(Reunion Records)
There’s a reason why Casting Crowns is one of the best Christian bands out today. After three albums, lead singer/songwriter Mark Hall still knows how to write songs that pierce through religiosity in the Church. What's more, The Altar and The Door leaves plenty of room for the sinners and the saints to come closer to Jesus. Album Highlights: “East to West” and “What This World Needs”

Between Earth and Sky
Between Earth and Sky by Jason Upton

(Key Of David Ministries)
Judging prophetic worship music is hard enough as it is, however, with Jason Upton, there is an excellence to his music that cannot be denied. On this CD/DVD, he calls to remembrance the late Keith Green as he challenges Christians to wake up to the reality of God all around them. Album Highlights: “Emma’s Song”, “Spirit of Adoption” and “Beyond the Window”

Pages
Pages by Shane and Shane

(Inpop Records)
Shane and Shane play worship music as though its a literal love song to the Savior. Pages illustrates the tug of war within the heart of every Christian but always presses towards knowing Him more. Shane and Shane could be at their lyrical best. Most importantly, they make you believe that your faith could bring you through the fiery furnace. Album Highlights: “Vision of You” and “Burn Us Up ”

Five Score and Seven Years Ago
Five Score and Seven Years Ago by Relient K

(Gotee Records)
What I love most about Relient K is the band's ability to mature with every album yet never lose that silly, tongue-in-cheek humor -- all the while never lacking substance. Five Score... showcases every good side of this five-man pentagon of sound, and it moves them seamless from MTV to the Gospel Music Channel. Album Highlights: “Must Have Done Something Right” and ”“Deathbed”

Full Attention
Full Attention by Jeremy Riddle

(Varietal Records)
He's the only "newbie" to crack the charts this year, but Jeremy Riddle comes with a style and talent that demands the spotlight. Full Attention has song after song of flawless, sing-able praise and worship. And Riddle is not afraid to over-extend himself for the Gospel. His uplifting voice and powerful roar turned him into one of Christian music's rising stars. Album Highlights: “Call to Praise ” and “Stand in Awe "

Ruined for Ordinary
Ruined for Ordinary by Nate Sallie

(Curb Records)
Those who by-passed Nate Sallie's album thinking that it was another foray into pop rock missed one of 2007's hidden gems. The former poster boy for CCM bangs on the piano keys with unmatched fury. He pulls together a southern swagger with old gospel rhythms, and in the process, ruins us all for the ordinary. Album Highlights: “Look At Me Now” and “Let Go of Me”

Whispered and Shouted
Whispered and Shouted by Aaron Shust

(Brash Records)
He went from just another guy with a guitar to a worship leader in the same league as Chris Tomlin. Aaron Shust's sophomore album highlights his two greatest qualities: his deep, sweeping vocals and his t-shirt-and-jeans approach to gospel songwriting. He perfects the art of meaningful lyrics. Album Highlights: “Long Live the King” and “Worthy / Let All I Do”

Best Remix Album

Jesus Is Jesus Is: Remix by Hillsong London
(Integrity Records)
Take cover because the Hillsong London fog has turned into acid jazz. The remix album of 2006’s Jesus Is takes the mega-church's worship to a whole new level. Lovers of ambient rock along with those who adore Hillsong's fiery passion for Christ will not be disappointed. Album Highlights: “Lord of All” and “Jesus Is"
