Tens of thousands of partiers gathered in a Denver park Sunday to smoke marijuana and eat pot-laced foods.

April 20 is the date marijuana users have held underground pot parties for years.

But since Colorado legalized recreational marijuana use, organizers have created a two-day festival in Denver, drawing pot users from around the country.

Resident Joe Garramone brought his 3-year-old to the event, saying, "It feels good not to be persecuted anymore."

He smoked a joint while his young daughter played on a lawn crowded with fellow pot-smokers.

Meanwhile, police were out in force for the event, reminding revelers it's still against the law to publicly smoke pot in the state. They issued 130 citations or arrests during the drug-induced celebration.

Last year's rally was cut short by a shooting that wounded three, and two violent pot-related deaths occurred in Denver in the past week.

Last Monday, Denver police say a man ate marijuana-infused candy before shooting and killing his wife.

And a college student who traveled from Wyoming to Colorado for spring break ate too much of a marijuana-laced cookie and jumped to his death from a hotel balcony last week.

Washington state is the only other state to legalize recreational marijuana use.
