JERUSALEM, Israel -- The Israel Navy is preparing to put two new Dolphin-class submarines into service this year.

Israel purchased the new subs, the INS Crocodile and the INS Rahav, from Germany in 2012.

Dolphin-class submarines are among the most advanced in the world, with capabilities suited to a broad scope of missions. The subs are capable of launching cruise missiles with a 2,800-mile range. Each submarine can operate with a 35-member crew and can accommodate up to 50 crewmen.

The crews who will be manning the newest additions to Israel's submarine fleet are taking part in updated training programs, Israel Defense reported.

The new subs are equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) technology, which allows them to remain immersed for longer periods of time. They also generate less noise allowing them to be "stealthier."

They're equipped with state-of-the-art naval weapons systems and improved detection capabilities. And they're more maneuverable.

"In the event of a clash with strong water currents, the new steering station is designed to allow them to move more easily," the commander of the Navy's submarine school said.

The crews' training includes classroom work, digital simulators, physical fitness and tours in a submarine.

"Obviously the goal of the training is to be relevant to the reality in the field," the commander said, adding that the goal is to stay one step ahead of Israel's enemies.
