Hash Oil Explosions Raising Concern in Colorado

Hospital officials in Colorado say more people are getting burned as they try to extract a potent oil from marijuana.
 
The golden hash oil can be up to 80 percent THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the plant's intoxicating chemical. However, getting the oil is a dangerous process that sometimes causes fiery explosions.
 
Colorado marijuana businesses are allowed to manufacture hash oil using butane, but with strict rules.
 
Adults 21 years and older in the state are allowed to grow up to six plants at home. Cooks will often use their own plants to make hash oil in their personal kitchens or garages.
 
Authorities say there have been at least 31 explosions since January. Several people have been treated for second and third-degree burns.
 
Law enforcement and fire officials are struggling with how to respond. Some prosecutors say hash oil production is protected under a provision of the new legal pot law, but others are issuing victims felony charges.
