Groups Urge Prayer in Battle for Conscience Protections

A group about to do battle with the Obama administration before the Supreme Court is asking Americans for prayers and support.

Priests for Life is one of seven groups fighting the HHS mandate under Obamacare. The mandate requires employers to provide insurance coverage for contraceptives and abortifacients or pay a fine even if it violates their biblically held beliefs.

"A nation that says, 'Violate your faith or pay a price' is not protecting religious freedom," Father Frank Pavone, national director for Priests for Life, said.

Pavone and other plaintiffs in the case, including Alveda King, are asking Americans to pray with them as they prepare to fight this battle for religious liberty.

"The current administration overrides the religious rights of Americans sometimes with a stroke of a pen," King said.

"The role of a judge is to make judgments about law, not about religious beliefs," Pavone added.

Fundamentally the case is about whether or not the government can force Americans to act contrary to their conscience. If the court rules in favor of the Obamacare mandate, Father Pavone and many other Christians fear violations will continue, including the possibility of forcing Christians to perform gay weddings.

There's also a fear that the federal government could add other mandates to the list such as insurance coverage for abortion.

"When people of faith are confronted with 'who will you obey,' their answer must be, 'We will obey God or our Creator and not human beings,' And so it may bring us to that point," King said.
