'Of Kings and Prophets' a Faith-Based Series Full of Sex, Violence

A new faith-based television program makes its debut on ABC Tuesday night but viewers may need to beware.

"Of Kings and Prophets" dramatizes stories from the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, beginning as King Saul's reign is diminishing and David is rising to prominence.

The series targets adult audiences because of its graphic depiction of violent and sexual themes.

Melissa Henson, with Parent Television Council, told CBN News the program resembles HBO's "Game of Thrones" without the dragons. She advises parents to shield their children from the series.

Henson spoke with CBN's Lorie Johnson about the show and it's explicit content. Click play to watch.

She said the initial episode includes several bloody battle that leave little to the imagination. She further indicated that show insiders hinted the violent themes will continue and that the content will also include graphic sexual content.

Henson notes that the Bible contains a great deal of subject matter that is sexual and violent in nature. However, she is skeptical that people of faith will want to see those stories portrayed on screen in such a graphic manner. As a result, the show may turn-off Christians and Jews who revere the Holy Scriptures.

"Of Kings And Prophets" insiders say the show's producers pushed the envelope when it came to standards and pactices allowable on network television. They added that content deemed too profane to appear on the air will be available for viewing on the ABC website.

The entertainment industry has experienced an uptick in faith-based movies and television programs in recent years.

Large audiences have flocked to the genre, prompting backers to invest in these movies and television projects. They are banking on the likelihood that such high production values will pay-off.

The makers of "Of Kings And Prophets" appear to have spared no expense.

It remains to be seen whether the television public responds favorably to the series and whether it draws people to its inspiration, the Bible.
