The fighting between Muslims and Christians has left at least 30 people dead in the Central African Republic.

Others are fleeing their homes in an effort to escape the violence.

Everaldo De Suza of the Saint Anne parish in the central town of Dekoa said that the fighting began April 8 when Christian militants attacked and Muslim fighters fought back.

A Christian commander confirmed the fighting but denied that his forces had instigated the violence.

This latest outbreak comes as the United Nation Security Council approved a measure Thursday to send nearly 12,000 extra peacekeeping troops to the region. Still, they won't arrive until September. France has already sent around 2,000 troops and the African Union sent 6,000.

Central African Republic has been in chaos since a March 2013 coup, when mostly Muslim rebels seized power and launched a brutal regime.
