Pakistan Targets Christian Slums for Demolition

Tens of thousands of Pakistani Christians may soon be homeless.

According to Christianity Today, 10 slums in Islamabad, Pakistan, are scheduled for demolition because the government fears the Christians living there may soon overtake the Muslim majority.

In 2014, The Capital Development Authority (CDA) announced its decision to eradicate the illegal slums known as "katchi abadis" because of "demographic problems." Most of the 120,000 people reportedly residing in the slums are Christians and Afghan refugees.

Christians and civil libertarian activists joined a rally this week called by the Awami Workers Party (AWP) denouncing the government for promoting sectarianism.

Qamar Zaman Kaira, the information secretary  for the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), insisted Pakistan must welcome all citizens, regardless of their faith.

Kaira added, "It is really condemnable" for the CDA to claim Pakistan "is only for Muslims."
