Boko Haram Siege: 'Dead Bodies Keep Haunting Me'

Boko Haram is suspected in killing at least 29 people, many of them Christitans, over the last month in Nigeria.

"They destroyed the telephone mast first before invading our community - this was to prevent us from telephoning and requesting help," said an area pastor who requested anonymity for fear of being hunted down by the terrorists.

"They killed 10 members of ours using machetes and then slaughtering them," he said.

Boko Haram is also suspected in other recent attacks against Christians, including a suicide bombing that killed 19 people, and a shooting attack that took the lives of 10 Christians.

Church leaders in the area confirmed reports of renewed violence. They say Boko Haram rebels are losing ground in the northeast and the attacks are seen as an effort to regain territory lost to the Nigerian military.

The recent attacks have deeply unsettled the Christian community, with one church member saying she's decided to leave town.

"I can't eat or sleep as the gory sight of the dead bodies keeps haunting me," she said. "I am leaving this town. We have just returned thinking the place is safe, but from what we have seen, the terrorists are bent on returning here."

Church leaders say that despite the persecution they've experienced, they will continue to uphold peace among its basic principles.
