About the Authors

It didn't take long for R.K. (Randy) Mortenson's family to discover that writing was in his future. By the fifth grade, Randy was already a published author having been paid $5 for a poem that appeared in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune supplement, The Smile Factory. It was then that he discovered the power of a good story.

Mortenson is now an ordained minister in the Church of the Lutheran Brethren. He has been writing devotional and inspirational articles since 1995. He currently serves as a Navy chaplain in Florida, where he lives with his wife and daughter.

Children and Parents Adore Landon Snow

CBN.com As much as children crave fantasy and adventure, Christian parents long for books that offer their youngsters solid biblical wisdom and instruction. These two differing perspectives collide fantastically in R. K. Mortenson’s Landon Snow series published by Barbour Books.

In the vein of C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia, the Landon Snow series is a delightful melding of beautifully descriptive whimsy, fantasy, and adventure with grounded, solid, biblical wisdom.

In R.K. Mortenson’s enchanting debut novel, Landon Snow and the Auctor’s Riddle, young Landon, an inquisitive boy who wants to know the reason for everything, is about to fall headfirst into an unbelievable adventure he will never forget.

Landon’s birthday trip to his grandparents’ house suddenly takes an unexpected turn, and, he begins to wonder if everything that happens in life is just one big accident.

Unable to go sleep one night, Landon stumbles upon a secret passageway in his grandparents’ home that leads to the town’s library. It is there that Landon reads the first part of a strange riddle and climbs the giant Book of Meanings. In a twist of fate, he tumbles end over end, through time and space, through the pages of the immense book, eventually landing in Wonderwood -- an amazing, incredible place inhabited by gnome-like creatures called “Odds.” In his search for the riddle’s answer, Landon teams with a beautiful black horse he names Melech, and together they search for the source of the strange messages that Landon receives.

R.K. Mortenson’s Landon Snow and the Auctor’s Riddle is a fast-paced adventure that will keep young readers on the edge of their seats. With each turn of the page, they will want to know, “Will he find the answers he needs? Will he ever be able to get back home to his family? Where is God?”

In R. K. Mortenson’s exhilarating sequel, Landon Snow and the Shadows of Malus Quidam (to be published in March 2006), Landon revisits this magical kingdom, but discovers immediately that a war is raging between the powers of light and the shadows of the wicked Malus Quidam. Landon watches in horror as his younger sister Holly succumbs to the lure of devious Ludo, the leader of the Odds and a puppet of Malus Quidam. With the help of his old friends, Landon learns what he needs to do to set his sister free, but must summon the courage to follow the Auctor’s mysterious plan and free the Odds from Malus Quidam’s evil power.

Landon Snow and the Shadows of Malus Quidam promises to equal both the suspense and the substance of Mortenson’s first offering. With his original and charming allegories, the author delicately leads children to the symbolic truths discovered by Landon himself, “The Auctor creates life and gives light to live by. Malus Quidam seeks to destroy life and cover everything with the darkness of death.”

The Christian-themed Landon Snow series is aimed at 8- to 12-year-olds and is rapidly capturing the attention of entire families across the country. Since its release in October, Landon Snow and the Auctor’s Riddle has been in the top ten in sales for the Juvenile Fiction category in the CBA market.

R. K. (Randall Kent) Mortenson, an ordained minister in the Church of the Lutheran Brethren, has been writing devotional and inspirational articles since 1995. Mortenson currently serves as a Navy chaplain in Florida. He lives with his wife and daughter in Jacksonville.
