VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER

A Spiritual Look at Reepicheep

CBN.com - Brave, valiant, loyal, faithful…and small. That’s Reepicheep, the little mouse with big faith who shows it’s not your size, it’s your allegiance that matters.

Reepicheep is one of the beloved characters in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third book in C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series. This petite, talking mouse illustrates that you don’t have to be a giant to fight for what you believe in and it doesn’t take much more than your beliefs to guide you. He proves this throughout the voyage many times. One of his shining moments is when the Narnians appeared afraid to eat and drink at Aslan’s table. Confident, little Reepicheep boldly takes the first sip of wine.

The brave mouse also shows discernment when he battles against dark creatures. He uses his intellect to decide if it is of sword or other method he needs to use to defeat his enemy.

When he begins the voyage, he follows without question. But, unlike the other Narnians, he has another objective in mind aside from finding the Seven Lost Lords. He wants to discover Aslan’s kingdom.

His desire to see the world beyond the horizon is fed just by the mere mention of such a kingdom. He does not need another reason other than the fact that he had heard about it to believe in it. Despite the remarks of doubters, Reepicheep’s faith and courage compels to see greatness.

Unwavering faith is an amazing weapon to use in overcoming the trials we face as Christians. If we follow God as willingly and faithfully as Reepicheep, we will see just how much one person can make a difference.

In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Reepicheep mentors Eustace, Edmund and Lucy’s cousin. A novice in Narnia, Eustace doesn’t understand their world and is disrespectful and cruel to Reepicheep in the beginning. Instead of retaliating, in the end, Reepicheep teaches Eustace the importance of honor and loyalty.

In the same way, God wants us to aid those who are new in Christianity, to His world. Just as Reepicheep does with Eustace, we are to teach them what their new life in Christ means and how to face the danger and obstacles in our world.
