Stop Going It Alone

By Valorie Burton
Author and Motivational Speaker

CBNMoney.comMake the most of your time by doing something I like to call "double dipping."  In other words, combine two goals into one activity.  Intentionally connect with the people who matter to you while accomplishing something that's been lingering on your to-do list — like exercising, learning something new, or traveling.

In our fast-paced culture, being intentional about engaging in activities that double dip is a winning strategy for reclaiming your schedule and reconnecting with what matters most. While it seems simple, the fact is that many of us are going it alone in everything we do.  A recent study revealed Americans have fewer confidants than ever before — and as our culture becomes more individualistic, we can sometimes neglect relationships in lieu of pursuing "success" we believe will make us happy. But without healthy, connected relationships, happiness is elusive.

Here are a few simple ways to stay connected while engaging in activities that bring you joy:

Take a class together

What have you been wanting to learn?  The samba?  How to cook gourmet?  How to play golf?  Set out to learn something new, and do it with someone you'd like to spend more time with.  It will make something you already wanted to do that much more enjoyable.

Volunteer together

Some neighbors and I have been doing this for a few months now.  We've gotten to know each other better while simultaneously having fun making a difference in our community.

Get a workout partner

If you're like a lot of people, staying motivated to work out is sometimes a challenge — especially when you're the only one to hold you accountable.  Partner with a friend and keep each other motivated.  Make it a daily walk at lunchtime, an early-morning date at the gym, or join a sports league together.

Go shopping

Studies show that people who shop alone spend more money.  A real girlfriend will say things the saleslady simply won't — and save you money in the process.  And if you are one of the millions who shops when you are feeling down, a friend can lift your spirits and reduce the likelihood of an emotional spending spree.  So if you enjoy shopping, set a budget, call a friend, and enjoy some time at your favorite stores.

Plan a trip together

Perhaps you've been talking about a weekend getaway or daydreaming about that Caribbean vacation. Why not invite others to join you?  Whether you're going as a family and invite another family, or you're single and want to go with friends, start the conversation. Make a plan. Enjoy!

My challenge to you this week:

Stop going it alone.  Find some ways to incorporate your relationships into the activities and goals that matter most to you.

Journaling assignment:

What activities or goals could you "double dip"? Who do you want to include in those activities? What's the first step to making it happen?
