CBN.com -- Katherine, 16, lives in Iquitos, a remote part of Peru where fresh water for drinking and bathing is scarce. For her entire life she has been forced to bathe in the polluted Nanay River near her home. But pollution wasn’t the only danger she faced. One day she was bitten by a snake.

“I usually go to bathe or wash at the river every day, but that day I felt something bite me on my ankle!” recalled Katherine. “The pain was so strong that I fell into the water.”

Katherine’s parents took her to the hospital where she spent the next fifteen days receiving treatments, which saved her life.

“I thought my daughter was going to die. I was so afraid for her,” said Adolpho, the girl’s father.

“I was very scared because I thought the doctors would have to cut off my leg,” added Katherine.

When Katherine recovered and returned home, the family’s fears for their daughter’s safety were even more intense because they still had to use the river to bathe.

“I was afraid to go back there but I had no choice. There is no other water for us to use to bathe or wash with,” said Katherine. “And at night I could not sleep because I kept having nightmares about snakes biting me again!”

So Operation Blessing came to the community and drilled them a well. Now everyday there is plenty of water for drinking and for Katherine to bathe with.

“Thanks Operation Blessing for giving us the well. Now we don’t have to bathe in the river or drink contaminated water either!” said Adolpho.

“Thanks Operation Blessing for this great gift,” added Katherine.
